Artist Darius Hulea breathes life into the past with his series of incredible sculptures.

Carefully bending iron, brass, stainless steel and copper wires into abstract but recognizable portraits of famous historical leaders and thinkers, Hulea brings new context to the subjects in the modern age. He has created sculptures of figures such as the emperor Ferdinand I and the philosopher Mircea Eliade.

“I hope that people will understand that I do nothing but draw in a new way, in a durable material of the past,” Hulea shared with My Modern Met, “I can then explore and research, as an artist, mythical, Renaissance, and modern thinking by finding three-dimensional examples that describe us now in a history of the past.”

Trained in the art of classical drawing, the sculptor views his work as a form of three-dimensional “sketching” and sees himself in a line of artists who turned recycled materials into pieces of art.

“Some, like Picasso, used recycled materials or, like Calder or David Smith, industrial materials. That moment was the turning point of the sculptures that I am doing now. For me, this type of drawing is what we find in the sketches of the great artists of the Renaissance like Michelangelo and Da Vinci—serious and realistic compositions that anyone can understand.”

Quite literally “threading” her interests of art and programming, Russian artist Ani Abakumova recreates stunning classical portraits by intricately arranging thousands of pieces of thread.

With the help of a mathematic algorithm Abakumova invented with her husband, she is able to pinpoint each spot where the colored thread must be placed to create a full image.

“My program analyzes millions of possibilities of how to place the threads and when it finds the result that best matches the photograph, it stops counting,” Abakumova told the website StoryTrender, “Without a computer program, it would not be possible for the human eye to create something like this. I enjoy seeing how mathematics can help create beautiful things.”

Abakumova has threaded a number of classical portraits, including Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, and William Adolphe Bouguereau’s Italian Girl Drawing Water. Each portrait contains more than 8,000 pieces of colored thread and would measure about two-and-a-half miles if they were to be unspooled.

Incredibly, the husband and wife team are planning to expand the size of their projects for an exhibition in Moscow.

If you look closely at artist Sourabh Gupta’s flowers, you might think you’re holding a fresh flower picked from a garden— you could even convince yourself of the faintest hint of lilac, or jasmine.

In reality, Gupta’s flowers have spent no time outside and require no soil, rain, or sunshine. This is because his lifelike flowers are actually crafted from a number of everyday items, including paper towels, food coloring, and parchment paper.

Gupta, who was born in India and currently lives in New York, designed his first paper flowers in his youth when he was tasked with decorating his church. Using all items at his disposal, including receipt paper, the artist discovered that he could transform nearly anything with a bit of effort and imagination.

“Where I grew up, if you wanted something, you had to make it yourself. It’s so profoundly within our blood that we don’t see a dead end anywhere. All my life, that’s how I’ve worked,” Gupta said in an interview with the New York Times.

As of late, Gupta’s realistic flowers have gained him attention from famous designers, including fashion icon Tory Burch. Burch tasked the artist with creating flowers for a Met Gala gown. Gupta astonishingly prepared 320 paper daises in three days for the dress to be ready for the red carpet.

With both a lifelong love of crocheting and a fascination with the atomic age, it makes sense that Australian artist Trevor Smith decided to turn vintage household knickknacks into impeccable woolen replicas.

From vinyl record players to clock radios, tea kettles to outdated recipes, Smith can transform nearly anything into lifelike wool sculptures. He learned the craft as a child and has been practicing ever since, a lifelong hobby that he describes as his source of relaxation.

“My mother taught me to crochet when I was a child. I think I was probably eight years old and I enjoyed it straight away,” Smith said in an interview with the website MollieMakes

When it comes to deciding what to crochet, Smith finds inspiration from vintage recipe books and dusty magazines from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, as well as the types of appliances that surrounded him during his childhood.

Speaking of the era during which he grew up, Smith told ABC News, “It’s the period I grew up in, the period of lime green kitchens and bright orange appliances, something that I’m familiar with, something I’ve always had an interest in.”

The pieces take Smith around 15-30 hours to create and he’s currently exhibiting them throughout Australia.
