You know how hacking looks pretty simple in movies and TV shows? The hacker just hits some random keys on the keyword, green letters start filling up the screen, and “hacking” is complete. Well, it turns out that hacking is a lot more complicated and requires enormous effort to pull it off successfully.

In order to see just how accurate are the depictions of hacking scenes in movies Italian Job, Skyfall, and Tron: Legacy among others as well as in TV shows like Chuck and CSI: Cyber, WIRED magazine hosted professional hacker and security researcher Samy Kamkar to analyze some of them. It turned out that while some scenes were really authentic, others contained a lot of cyber smoke and mirrors.
