I volunteer at an afterschool program and when I tell kids to clean up after snack time, they reluctantly comply. If I tell them, however, to clean up a mess they didn’t make, the resist is immediate. “I didn’t make that mess, why should I have to clean it up?” This follows people into adulthood where we only want to focus on problems or job requirements we have and tone everything else out. Your organization won’t get better if everyone is stuck in what they do and unwilling to lend a helping hand to someone else. If you want to make a difference, your job is everything. In hindsight, risks seem easy when it’s successful. If we look at Amazon stock over the past few years, it would be obvious that we should have bought at $300 and waited until now, hovering around $1000. It wasn't so obvious back then though. The risks we take right now don't always pan out the way we want, but are crucial if we want to succeed. If we take risks, we sometimes fail. But if we take no risks, we will always fail. If you want to stay in a bubble, you won’t get very far.
