Emily Coxhead describes herself as a “fluffy-haired, smiley kinda thing but also a designer, illustrator and happy thing maker.” Her work, though varied, carries the same air of positivity, with the goal of making other people happy. A worthy cause, if nothing else.

Her website, The Happy News, launched in 2015, reports on positive changes and truly inspiring people – a cheerful twist on what we know as news. It’s a newspaper that celebrates the good, and God knows we could use a little good.

“The fact that I can do what makes me happy for a living whilst also making others happy surely has to be the best thing ever!” she told Virgin. “I thought if I could make a few people’s worlds a little happier then that’s what I would do until I figured out what I was going to do for a ‘proper’ job,” she recalled. “I set up a Kickstarter to fund the first issue of The Happy Newspaper, a newspaper to celebrate all the good stuff going on in the world.”

She hasn’t looked back since, and with appearances on BBC and HuffPost, amongst others, it’s clear that people are taking notice. Aside from her website, Coxhead released a range of greeting cards and merchandise, published her book Make Someone Happy with Penguin Random House, and continues to sparkle positivity through her Instagram page.

JUST wrapped up Issue 14 of @thehappynewspaper… 😅 After the @bbcnews feature, @nowthisnews, Australian TV and all the other ridiculous/terrifying interviews I did a few weeks ago, we have reached over 10,000 happy news subscribers!! 😱🤯 That's more than double last quarter. I can't even begin to comprehend that amount of people. I never everrr had that expectation in mind when I started this funny little newspaper… Of course (after I decided I was doing more than 1 issue) I hoped it would grow but I never expected it to and I certainly never would've put a number on it because I'd have just been disappointed. Instead… since 2015, every time I got a new subscriber it felt incredible✨ I got a super shit email Sunday morning, one of those that puts into question everything you are and do even though you know it should just be ignored. Ironic as I've spent basically all of my 'bank holiday' weekend finishing the newspaper because that's what you do when you're passionate about something, when you really really care (probably a little too much sometimes). I realise that there's a growing number of people here (as well as subscribers!) and I guess not everyone knows what actually goes into the happy news… The reality is… We're a very small team of real life humans with thoughts, feelings, shit going on etc which includes.. me 💁🏼‍♀️ (creator/designer/illustrator/part editor/part fact checker/full-time promoter/cheerleader… all singing all dancing all living and breathing rarely switch off happy newspaper advocate), my editor and so much more @zabbyallen 🙋🏼‍♀️, assistant and a million other jobs @serenity_va 🦸🏻‍♀️, three writers (Abi, David and Una) and two feature writers @gabrielletreanor and Bex, our new freelance illustrator @rachelsuzanneillustration and gorgeous poem writer and there with a cup of tea when I need her @sophie.powles… That's it! I reckon we‘d class as one of the tiniest newspaper teams to ever exist but it's the most bloody marvellous team I could wish for and I am SO unbelievably grateful for their time and love. Surround yourself with people who feel like sunshine, always 🌞💛
