]]>Huang Yung-Fu is a 96-year-old retired soldier who used his art to prevent the government from demolishing his town. In the past, Nantun District, Taichung was a charming village with over a thousand homes, most of the residents were former soldiers given temporary housing by the government. As years went by, most of the soldiers moved away and several developers started buying the properties. But there are still people who decided to settle down in Taichung for good.
Sadly, the number of villagers became fewer and only 11 houses remained. As one of the few remaining people in the village, Yung-Fu started to paint a bird inside his home and eventually expanded his work by painting the walls outside with various designs. His artwork received good reviews and massive interest from people and ultimately, his village, now called “Rainbow Village,” became one of the most visited tourist spots in Taichung. Not only it became a tourist attraction, but it also halted the government to demolish the remaining houses in the area.
Yung-Fu was dubbed as the “Rainbow Grandpa” by the tourists because of his colorful personality and creative heart.
