Kip Omolade is a Brooklyn based artist who creates detailed masks and large hyperrealistic portraits. According to Omolade, he started his artistic journey as a graffiti artist while interning at Marvel Comics and The Center for African Art.

“In my paintings, I previously presented each mask as a singular portrait,” the artist shared to Colossal. “In my current work, the faces are now interacting with each other. They are arranged together on large canvases measuring 13-15 feet long. The masks have become mythological characters having conversations about humanity. I see them as deities pondering age-old questions about birth, life, death, identity, and love.”

His work has been featured in galleries all over the US, as well as media worldwide. During his career, the artist has been working with big companies such as Nike and Sony Music.

“I have and had a couple of dreams in my life,” Nikvashvili said in an interview withFGUK Magazine. “One of them was and will always be to inspire others and make people understand the world I live in. To give people hope that everything is possible. And to see now that so many people relate or support my stories it makes me stronger and gives me hope!”

“I have never fitted into the masses and never want to,” admitted the artist. “My work has been and will be placed where I can be whoever I want to be. I feel safe and am the true me next to my boyfriend and in my work.”

Damsel Frau, Kennedy has been making masks since 2007, using textiles, ribbons, and beads, among other materials.

“I have always collected materials I find around—textiles, beads, small bits of ribbon, little ornaments and things—and I needed somewhere to put these materials to use,” Kennedy said in an interview with Office. “I don’t draw, design or plan. I sculpt and see where the materials take me. But it’s funny, I have never been particularly interested in masks as a category.”

Her well-made garments have been featured in publications like Vogue and Forbes. “For me the mask is a place where different elements come together as situation,” she wrote on her personal blog. “The work is about this place-situation, more so than the mask as a theme or category of form.”

“The mask is a place,” she added. “I am led by the phantasms appearing in the process of the making and the materials themselves. These guide my decisions and inform the objects I make.”

Check out some of her wonderful pieces in the gallery below.
