]]>A Renaissance woman through and through, Meir has earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Brown University, a Master of Science in Space Studies from the International Space University, and a Doctorate in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (UCSD).
Currently working onboard the International Space Station on her first spaceflight as part of Expedition 61 and 62, she’s due to return to Earth in the spring of 2020. But until she lands, she makes sure to spend her time meaningfully.
Amongst her many achievements, was a spacewalk that lasted for seven hours and 17 minutes, alongside her colleague Christina Koch. This was also the first all-female spacewalk in history. Meir has also participated in research flights on NASA’s reduced gravity aircraft and served as an aquanaut in an underwater habitat for NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO).
“For me, coming up here, it just was the most amazing experience of my life, coming to the International Space Station, something that I had dreamed about since I was a kid,” she gushed in an interview with wbur. “And let me tell you, I thought it would be amazing. I knew it would be amazing. It is even far, far, far more incredible and impressive than I ever imagined. And that’s saying a lot.”
Jealous yet?

]]>“It’s #MarsLanding Day! Today, our @NASAInSight spacecraft blazes into the Mars atmosphere at 12,300 mph and slows to just 5 mph in less than 7 min., before gently touching down on the surface,” NASA tweeted.
InSight is the 3rd functional spacecraft currently on the Red Planet, together with Curiosity and Opportunity rovers. With thousands, including NASA employees, watching the historic landing, many excitedly waited for the first photos.
NASA already shared 2 shots taken by InSight and as usual, the netizens are ready to give their hilarious comments and memes. Check out below.

]]>At 17-years, she’s already training to become an astronaut with a very important mission. Alyssa has had her heart set on the stars ever since she was a little girl. “Daddy, I want to be an astronaut, and be one of the people that go to Mars,” she told her father when she was just 3 years old.
She aims to be the first person on Mars for the 2033 human mission to Mars. When that time comes, she will be 32 years old and she plans to soar off to the red planet to conduct science experiments, grow food, and look for signs of life over a two to three year period.
Alyssa’s list of accomplishments includes witnessing 3 Space Shuttle launches, attending Space Camp and Space Academy several times and Robotics Academy once. She was also the youngest to graduate from Advanced Space Academy and multiple Sally Ride Camps. She was also the first and only person so far to complete the NASA Passport program by going to all 14 NASA Visitor’s Centers. She was also the youngest to be accepted and graduate from the Advanced Possum Academy, officially making her certified to go to space and an astronaut trainee.
In addition to her astronaut training, she’s also studying all of her school subjects in 4 languages (English, Chinese, French, and Spanish). She also attends public speaking events to encourage others to get involved n science, technology, engineering, and maths.
“I did the same thing as other kids, like switching my mind about careers, wanting to be a teacher or the president one day. But the way I always thought about it was I would become an astronaut, go to Mars, come back, and then be a teacher or the president,” she told Teen Vogue.

]]>The small satellite was recently launched in a bid to test the technologies that we could in future use to clean up the junk that’s orbiting our planet. It’s armed with a net to trap objects, as well as a harpoon.
Although it’s small, at 100 kilograms the satellite is actually the biggest that has ever been released from the International Space Station.
Engineers in southern England, which is where the satellite’s control station is situated, picked up its signal on its first pass overhead. The satellite was assembled in Surrey, and the project is under the scientific leadership of the Surrey Space Centre at the University of Surrey in southern England.
RemoveDebris will first go through rigorous testing as it orbits the Earth, before beginning its experiments. The garbage that orbits the Earth is of concern as it could cause a collision hazard to future space missions. It’s relatively low in cost, so could prove a viable alternative to other proposals such as robotic arms and other more complex ideas.

]]>An astronaut is an often answer kids give when asked what they want to become. We can’t deny it, it sounds cool. One young man wanted to become an astronaut so hard that he couldn’t handle the waiting – he wanted it right now.
Jack Davis is only nine years old and already proactively looking for a job. Specifically, he wants the job of planetary protection officer, and he wrote a letter to NASA applying for it. NASA has recently listed this role with a brief explanation – the planetary protection officer aims to protect Earth stopping contamination from “extraterrestrial targets of exploration”.
Jack carefully crafted the letter and sent it to NASA:
“Dear NASA,
My name is Jack Davis and I would like to apply for the planetary protection officer job. I may be nine but I think I would be fit for the job. One of the reasons is my sister says I am an alien also I have seen almost all the space and alien movies I can see. I have also seen the show Marvel Agents of Shield and hope to see the movie Men in Black. I am great at video games. I am young, so I can learn to think like an Alien.
Sincerely,
Jack Davis,
Guardian of the Galaxy
Fourth Grade”

Jack probably didn’t expect to receive a reply from NASA, so imagine his surprise when the letter arrived. Dr James L Green wrote him an encouraging letter congratulating him on his interest in the role.
“Dear Jack,
I hear you are a “Guardian of the Galaxy” and that you’re interested in being a NASA Planetary Protection Officer. That’s great!
Our Planetary Protection Officer position is really cool and is very important work. It’s about protecting Earth from tiny microbes when we bring back samples from the Moon, asteroids and Mars. It’s also about protecting other planets and moons from our germs as we responsibly explore the Solar System.
We are always looking for bright future scientists and engineers to help us, so I hope you will study hard and do well in school. We hope to see you here at NASA one of these days!
Sincerely,
Dr. James L. Green
