The most famous and largest art museum in the world, the Louvre, is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its iconic pyramid’s construction this year. To commemorate this special occasion, French artist Jean Rene, also known as JR, turned the famous glass pyramid into a mesmerizing optical illusion.

JR used 2000 strips of paper and with the help of 400 people he created an incredible 17,000 square meter, or 183,000 square foot, work of art. Once they were done, from above the pyramid looked like it was placed in the middle of a grayscale quarry. On March 30th, the artist invited everyone on social media to come and see what they’ve created.

“The images, like life, are ephemeral. Once pasted, the art piece lives on its own. The sun dries the light glue and with every step, people tear pieces of the fragile paper. The process is all about participation of volunteers, visitors, and souvenir catchers,” Jean Rene said below one of his photos.

So many people rushed to see this newly created masterpiece, that it was destroyed in just a few hours.

But photos captured the beauty of this creation, so take a look.

There are many jaw-dropping optical illusions but this one will have you shaking your head..literally. At first look, all you can see are rows of black and white lines but if you watch closely at the image while shaking your head, a hidden image will gradually reveal.

This optical illusion was first shared by nanotech engineer Dr. Michelle Dickinson on Twitter. “You can only see this optical illusion if you shake your head (I’m serious),” she wrote. Right after she posted the image, Twitter users started sharing their thoughts on the unusual image and their tips on how to see the hidden animal such as moving the image back and forth, or narrowing your eyes.

YouTuber Brusspup shows how you can make any object “disappear” using lenses that bend light. Invisibility lenses create an awesome illusion based on The Rochester Cloak, a series of cloaking experiments done at the University of Rochester.

“It uses 4 lenses to control light in such a way that it renders an object invisible,” Brusspup explains. “When the light enters the first lens, it flips the image upside down. The second lens sends the light straight into the 3rd lens. The 3rd lens focuses the light into a point about 3 inches past the lens. Since the light is focused into a point, any object placed around that point cannot be seen when looking through the lenses. The light is essentially bending around the object. Once the light hits the point just past the 3rd lens, it then flips back right side up. This allows the background image to pass through all of the lenses without warping or being seen as upside down.”

Isn’t it awesome?

We can’t always comprehend the way our mind works. It’s a weird sensation, but also a fun one, so that’s why we love optical illusions. The one you can see below seems crazy at first, but it actually had a scientific explanation behind it.

If you stare at the image below for around 15 seconds, you’ll notice it fading away until you no longer see it at all. Crazy, right? The phenomenon behind it is called the Troxler effect, named after the Swiss physician who discovered it over two centuries ago.

It’s still unknown how exactly the Troxler effect works. As far as we know – it’s magic!
