]]> Paper quilling is not as simple as it looks. True, you only need a piece of paper and a glue stick, but it takes real talent to roll, shape, and glue together the paper into a full-on masterpiece.

Portland-based graphic designer and paper artist, Alia Bright, manipulates paper strips into pop culture characters, abstract geometric figures, and precise typography. “I try to maintain the right level of stylistic simplicity while still creating visual interest through color, pattern, and shadows,” she shared with Colossal.

She uses novel line work and abstraction to communicate a unique aesthetic that plays with perspective, shadow, and light.

I had a few ideas for this #GoodtypeTuesday. I tossed around several of my favorite ways to center myself when the brain gets too stressed or overwhelmed: solo travel, car-dancing, scream-singing Motown Philly (the yoozh). But I decided to go straight up primal with this one. Hugs are the most natural therapy, tapping into our instinctive need for touch and interaction. They offer, in a single wordless gesture, security, warmth, compassion, and affection. (And if we're sciencing, hugs also release oxytocin in your brain, which calms your nervous system and lowers blood pressure—w00t for natural brain-drugs!) For me, there's nothing quite like a good squeeze from a loved one to bring the inner joy right up to the surface ♥ Squeezes for mental wellness!! #squeezepleeze @goodtype
