It’s no easy thing to raise a child while in college, especially when you want to maintain a high GPA. Childcare falls through, kids get sick, and homework has to be done after mommy hours have ended.

Meet Morgan King, a 21-year-old student at the University of Tennessee and a single mother of a beautiful baby girl named Korbyn. Morgan missed a very important day of school and thought for sure she was out of luck. Her professor’s response was so shocking to the world, it went viral.

Morgan Apologized In An Email For Missing Class And This Was Her Professor’s Response

Morgan posted a tweet mid-June that said, “told my professor I missed class yesterday because I couldn’t find childcare and this was her response. I’m literally crying. So blessed and thankful.”

A picture of Dr. Hunter’s email was attached.

Dr. Sally B. Hunter is a professor in the department of Child and Family Studies at the University of Tennessee where Morgan attends. Her response to Morgan’s unique situation has made her famous overnight.

Dr. Hunter claims she’s shocked that a reaction like hers would be such a rarity. “I feel like it was a really normal thing to do,” she said.

The Story Spread Like A Wildfire

YouTube

Two weeks after Morgan first posted the tweet, it had 26,000 likes, 5,000 retweets and was being reported on new sites everywhere.

Even Beverly Davenport, the Chancellor of the University of Tennessee, had something to say about it: “Morgan, thanks for showing us challenges college students face. Professor Hunter, thanks for being part of the solution.”

The widespread attention this story received is proof we all need to do better by one another. In an interview with local news outlet WBIR, Dr. Hunter explained how her professors had done this very thing for her as a young mom in graduate school. Way to pass it on, Dr. Hunter.

But There’s More To This Story

Facebook

Morgan goes to school full-time and works nights. Yes, her story is shared by so many other mothers—but there’s one aspect of her story that sets her apart, making her even more remarkable. Morgan lost her mother five months before she found out she was pregnant.

After Korbyn’s birth, not only was she struggling with childcare costs, but the sadness of her mother’s death and absence weighed on her heavily. Hats off to you, Morgan, for being so strong.

Infant care where Morgan lives costs almost three-quarters as much as the tuition she pays for college. There need to be more professors like Dr. Hunter, who recognize the significant hindrances for single parents to attend college and who offer themselves to be solutions to those hindrances.

Morgan’s story continues to go viral, inspiring so many other young parents to finish their degrees and to not be afraid to take hold of a hand that’s extended to them.
