We have seen various efforts to reimagine classical artworks in the past, but the way artist Adam Parker Smith does it is fairly unique. In his most recent series of works called “Crush,” Smith is compressing the classical sculptures from Hellenic and Baroque styles into blocks of marble.

According to the artist, these unique works have been partially inspired by the time he spent in Rome, Italy. Seeing the works of some of the best sculptors of all time in person, Smith decided to turn them into something new but still familiar.

“I feel like so many of my ideas start out as jokes, for better or worse,” he once explained his creative process.

The process of making the sculptures for “Crush,” which is comprised of six pieces, including compressed versions of Bernini’s “David” and “Apollo of Belvedere” by Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli, was long and complicated. It included making a detailed 3D model of the sculpture and then compressing it into a cube. The compressed version would then come to life after being carved into cubic meter-sized marble cubes.

Smith relied on a big team to achieve his vision, including a group of carvers, digital researchers from various museums, and a seven-axis reductive robot.

The completed sculptures are currently on public display at The Hole gallery in New York City. You can also check them out on Smith’s official Instagram or by scrolling down.

New Jersey-based artist Willie Cole is on a mission to give new life to discarded objects. He takes items that no one needs and turns them into peculiar sculptures.

Give Cole a bunch of objects, and the talented artist will know exactly what to do with them. No matter whether it’s a pile of plastic bottles or a closet full of high heels no one needs, Cole has the ability to put together even the most random objects into an intricate art piece.

“My interest or my habit is to work with objects that have had close intimate contact with human beings. The things you touch hold onto a part of you. My interest is then to extract and reveal the spirit in any object I use.”

While Cole works with all sorts of recycled material, most of his works have a more profound meaning and background. For example, his Air Mask series is dedicated to his friend and fellow artist Mark Morse, who died from an asthma attack. The collection was created out of defunct hairdryers, which Cole found in one abandoned building shortly after.

Cole frequently displays his works in exhibits in museums and galleries in the United States and abroad. You can also check out more of his pieces on social media or by continuing to scroll.

The Amsterdam Light Festival has been a part of the European culture for more than six years. During winter, artists come from different parts of the world to create unique light exhibitions. The aim of this is to inspire fellow artists as well as visitors.

This year, British artist Gali May Lucas participated in the festivities. He worked with sculptor Karoline Hinz and created statues that feature people focused on their smartphones with the light illuminating their faces. This installation was titled “Absorbed by Light.”

Lucas wanted to create art that everyone can relate to. More and more people are lost in their smartphones on the tram, on park benches, and even in restaurants. The sculptures show how lost people can be while using their mobile devices. He adds a white light and noise to perfect the work of art.

See pictures of this relatable statue below.

If you are visiting Amsterdam soon, you can visit the Hermitage to see it for yourself.
