Dorothy, an art studio based in Liverpool, UK, recently presented an intriguing new series of stamps inspired by literature and music. Each stamp contains artwork drawn from the particular book or music album alongside some basic info about the work.

There are 84 different stamps on the subject of books, divided into two collections. The first collection revolves around literary classics written between the 17th century and early 20th century, like Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and War and Peace by Tolstoy.

The second collection contains stamps inspired by modern books like Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, and Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude.

The music stamps have six collections, including two volumes of Alternative music albums. The first volume covers the period from 1984 to 1999 and includes Pixies’ Doolittle, Pulp’s Different Class, and Nirvana’s Nevermind.

The second volume covers the period from 2000 to 2018 and has stamps inspired by The Strokes’ Is This It, The White Stripes’ Elephant, and The National’s Alligator.

Four remaining music collections are dedicated to albums from music acts in the Electronic, Psychedelic, Post-Rock, and Post-Punk genre.

Anna Hermsdorf, an illustrator based in Aachen, Germany, has her own sense of style. She describes her style as “whimsical and girlish designs” that tell stories. She likes using just a few colors at a time and especially likes pastel colors.

That is probably why she started creating linoleum prints. Lino prints, also known as linocuts, are huge stamps that are hand-craved, covered in ink and then pressed onto paper. It’s a pretty old technique that’s been around for centuries, but it’s now brought back to life by young artists such as Anna, who want to explore new mediums and techniques.

Lino printing is a challenging process that requires a lot of expertise. There are no ways to correct mistakes while carving out the stamp, and it’s all done in reverse, as the stamp is a mirror image of the final print. But it’s also fun: it’s low tech and slow-paced, which can be calming, the end result is always a surprise, and once the stamp is done, you can make as many prints as you want, experimenting with different color combinations.

Anna has developed her own style of lino printing and shares her art and her work process over on her IG account. Just browsing her grid is enough to brighten up anybody’s day.

Natsuko Taguchi, also known as Naco Hinata, is a Japanese stamp artist who creates mesmerizing art and shares the process on Twitter. She has over 33,000 followers at the moment and her most viewed video has been viewed over 2 million times.

This talented artist carves her own stamps from rubber erasers. When she’s not making art, she’s teaching others how to do it in workshops. Wouldn’t it be fun to know how to make art like this? If you’re not nearby and can’t attend her workshops, the best thing you can do is watch the videos below and try to do something similar yourself.

Enjoy!
