]]> UNStudio is an international architectural design network specializing in architecture, interior and product design, urban development and infrastructural projects.

Recently, they unveiled designs for a new transportation hub using Hyperloop technology. In partnership with technology firm Hardt, they designed a modular station that will become the center of a new European hyperloop system.

A Hyperloop is a system of tubes through which a pod may travel free of air resistance or friction conveying passengers at high speed, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to flying. The proposed hub is a prototype station for a line that would connect Amsterdam and Frankfurt in 51 minutes only. Normally, it takes around 4 hours to travel between these two cities.

Right now the hub is just a prototype, but as technology continues to evolve, we can have a hyperloop system in the near future and construction may take place sooner or later.

This is the Hardt Hyperloop hub: a vision for the future of European hyperloop stations, and a study of urban integration for the hyperloop across towns and cities of different sizes. Existing cities of course have existing parameters, and so, within the hubs, a modular series of tessellating components adapt to a range of contexts: city-centre, edge of city or adjoining an existing infrastructure hub, such as an airport. It blends into the existing built fabric whether above or underground in dense inner city neighbourhoods or in low-rise settings. From platforms to functional spaces and to the roof which extends out over the transfer hubs, a modular design framework organises and connects all parts, making this system scalable, resilient and adaptable. Just as each Hyperloop line will draw power from solar panels on the tube, each Hyperloop Hub will also act as a battery to sustain itself. The roof canopy provides daylight, protects passengers, ensures climatic balance, and harvests energy and water. Surplus energy produced at the transfer hubs and along hyperloop’s tubes would power the autonomous vehicles, buses and bicycles which passengers can switch to in order to complete their journey. The station then regulates the highs and lows of the solar-powered system, as well as its internal environment through high-performance materials that respond to changing heat, light and humidity levels within. #unstudio #benvanberkel #stationdesign #sustainability #hyperloop #solarenergy #hardthyperloop
