Alexandra Elle’s Instagram page is a community propelling self-love and empathy. Living in Washington DC, the author and wellness consultant shares weekly reminders to be happy and grateful. Her uplifting messages are carried through small notes that she photographs and shares with her many followers.

“I still feel vulnerable when I share my writing,” she admitted in an interview with Create & Cultivate. “It’s my heart’s work. I think vulnerability is good, so I lean into it. People relate to authenticity and I truly believe that being vulnerable helps amplify that.”

“The highlight of my career has been building a community near and far, in person and online,” she added. “It blows my mind how writing, storying telling, and standing in comradery can shift the dynamics of sisterhood and self-love in such a positive way, time and time again.”

Elle also promotes her teachings through workshops and retreats centered around assisting others in finding their voices through storytelling, poetry, and narrative writing rooted in truth without shame.

I discovered that love is freedom, and not rooted in fear or hostility, after spending a lot of time nurturing dysfunctional relationships. Learning that not all dysfunction and emotional manipulation is dressed in aggressive, or harsh behavior, was an interesting learning curve too. I went from men who were straight up mean to me, to men who were "nice enough" but extremely passive-aggressive and emotionally unsafe. For years my self-worth was wrapped up in longing for the people I dated to be what they weren't: truly into me. I settled, I feared, I had unhealthy attachment issues (especially with the ones who used being "nice" as a ploy/distraction), I bent, I broke, I chased, I did all the things that ultimately drove me emotionally insane. It wasn't until my last situation-ship at the end of 2012 that realized 3 game-changing things: 1. I was wasting my time, and I needed to stop trying to make something out of nothing. Because accountability matters. 2. Dysfunction isn't love, no matter what package it's wrapped in. "Oh, but they're nice" or "Oh, he means well and is a good guy" ( just because they weren't cussing me out or being blatanlty disrespectful) was my favorite line. Trickery is real, but recognizing unhealthy patterns for what they are is realer. 3. Self-love had to be my best friend, 6 years ago, it wasn't. It wasn't anyone's job to love me but mine. . . Over the years, I've had to intentionally choose myself. I've had to radically love myself in order to be in a relationship, and friendships, that were healthy. I had to stop making excuses and thinking that love meant suffering and emotional abuse. I had to take control of my freedom, it had to start with me.
