Cooped up to avoid COVID-19, many of us indulge in hobbies, which help fill our time and allow room for comfort. Embroidery is a great way to pass the time and its little wonder that the past months have seen a steady rise in embroiderers, amongst other crafters.

With more than 30k followers on Instagram, you could say that Liz Stiglets is a sort of guru when it comes to the art of embroidery. The owner of cozyblue, Siglets believes that small, simple acts of creativity can make the world a calmer, happier place.

Her online store provides you embroidery kits, pre-printed patterns, and other supplies needed to take on the craft. You can also download for free her ultimate guide to embroidery, which includes stitching how-to, several methods of pattern transfer, stitching notes and diagrams, and ideas for variations and personalization.

“My favorite part is the stitching!” shared Siglets, in an interview with Random Acts of Amy. “It’s fun and exciting to see the design come to life, and I really enjoy the slow art of embroidery. My cozyblue motto is ‘slow down, get cozy, get crafty’ because I believe it is so important to take time for ourselves to be creative.” She adds that in the midst of our busy lives and hectic days, it is more important than ever to slow down and consciously tap into our creativity. “I think creative work can be a meditative practice, and I find that it is absolutely essential, not only for stress relief but for self-expression.”

Not only will you love the end result, you’ll love how you got there: with mindfulness, patience, and inspiration. Take a closer look:

American artists Adam Frezza and Terri Chiao joined forces under the moniker CHIAOZZA (pronounced like “wowza” or “yowza”), creating anything from sculptures and installations to collage art. Though their work is varied, it is very much distinguishable with bold color palettes and abstract shapes being constant themes throughout their work.

Scrolling through their rich portfolio, you can’t but crack a smile, with play being the very foundation of their practice. “Play is a tool for working together within a loosely structured arena,” explained Frezza and Chiao in an interview with Art of Choice. “Play forces us to constantly shift our perception into a realm that brings to light the wondrous, the magical, and the humorous in the everyday. Play questions what’s possible and explores new potentials. This experimental attitude is what drives new discoveries. We take our play very seriously, and we apply a rigor and a focus to playful ideas that help projects realize a different potential.”

Other people seem to play along, with their collaborative work featured in solo exhibitions in New York and Philadelphia, as well as numerous group shows around the US, and a variety of art and design venues internationally. The two also founded their own studio in 2011 in New York City.

“When we met, part of getting to know each other was through playing drawing games and doing craft projects together,” they recalled. “We started to take this play more and more seriously, and realized that there was an audience for what we were doing.”

Lifelong crafter Jodi Levine is a child at heart. Based in Brooklyn with her husband and two sons, her everyday life is a childhood dream, which includes tasks like making an Elizabethan princess costume out of coffee filters, making a parking garage for kids entirely of toilet paper, paper towel tubes, and cardboard boxes; and even crafting her own wedding flowers made from crepe paper.

Naturally, her love for crafting began early on. “When I look back at my childhood I realize that my path in the craft and lifestyle world was pretty much set from the start,” she told Mom Filter. “I loved making things and was always hoarding cardboard and other materials for crafts, planning parties and decorating for holidays. I pored over every women’s or lifestyle magazine that my mom bought and made a series of tiny, strange fashion and food magazines.”

Her passion blossomed into a career when she landed a job in the Craft Department at Martha Stewart Living, working there for over 19 years. “I always loved creating crafts for kids and pushed for doing the kids magazine at Martha Stewart way before I had kids,” she recalls. “I do, however, think that the ideas that I came up with after becoming a parent, whether for kid’s crafts, birthday parties or recipes, were much much simpler!”

Take a look at some of her original crafting ideas in the gallery below and follow her on Instagram for more.

Pippa Dyrlaga, a British paper-cutting artist, has practiced her craft for more than one decade and can now be considered a master in the field. This talented artist creates intricate illustrations, which are nature inspired. They are hand cut from a single piece of white paper.

The artist believes that there are a few things that are more ordinary than a blank sheet of paper. However, this blank sheet has a lot of possibilities to offer.

All her designs are complex and show how skilled the artist is. She also has admirable patience along with a steady hand. She creates these masterpieces when her natural surroundings inspire her. Her hometown is the English countryside, and this makes it a perfect spot for inspiration. She creates leaves, flowers, as well as patterned serpents with feathered birds. No matter the subject of her drawing, the skilled artist manages to wow her viewers and others alike. The leaf and petal is thinly sliced, and they are rendered from so many textural lines

Among all the crafts humankind has practiced, weaving has stood the test of time and is still being done after more than 10,000 years. Artists like Anna are the ones keeping the tradition alive. We wanted to introduce you to her brand – Anna & The Willow.

“Working with a natural material opened up a new world and I consequently went on to learn the different techniques of basketry,” Anna writes on her website. “I enjoy using the traditional skills of basketry and adding my own flare to the process. I am lucky enough to live in the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside nestled between the moors & dales. I work with six varieties of English willow grown in Yorkshire & Somerset.”
