“‘Beauty has always been a complicated thing to me,” admitted the hairstylist in an interview with Dazed & Confused. “I can appreciate a good supermodel. But I tend to find beauty in a lot of unconventionally beautiful things… smeared make-up, an untucked shirt, birthmarks, crooked teeth… greasy hair. To me, it’s all about orchestrating it right.”

Her looks are, indeed, unconventional, earning her quite a name in California. “I take a lot of my inspiration from experience and I am very nostalgic,” she added. “So I love creating odes to visual things that make me happy. It might be my favourite blouse, a grandma’s chair, or a texture I find interesting. I love being able to prove that they can be translated into hair.”

“I love the 80s. I missed the decade (or rather I was too young to ‘grow up’ in it) but I always gravitated towards it. I still do. I spent a lot of time dissecting and immersing myself in the fashion and especially, music. Geometric shapes also work really well with hair. They are simple and create clean work, which is important to me.”

“Starting April, I am equalizing women and men’s haircut,” wrote Hosono on her Instagram page. “I always wondered why we separate our hairstyles based on gender? It’s really diverse in a spectrum of preference! Many of my clients also identify gender neutral or transgender so… the aim is a gender-neutral salon. Cheers!”

Her post didn’t go unnoticed. In fact, it was shared so many times that she’s turned into a hair stylist sensation overnight. Tagged as the Vacancy Project, her NYC salon caters to all people from all genders.

“I didn’t really care whether or not I had my own hair salon but I had a lot of creative people, clients, and friends, and I just realized that a lot of hair salons divide by gender, and I wanted to do a gender-neutral hair salon,” explained the hair stylist in an interview with i-D Magazine. “I think [everywhere] will be all gender-neutral in the future,” she went on saying.

To Hosono and her colleagues, Ann Causey, and Genevieve Cook, the most important thing is to match the haircut to the person in front of them – working to reflect your inner style.

“I don’t want to give someone a hairstyle just because it’s trendy,” Hosono explained. Sounds kinda trendy to us.

Benny wants his daughter to be confident in everything she does and to be proud of their heritage. By showing so much love and care, he hopes that his little girl will grow up to be a confident and strong person. “He really is the most wonderful man in the world. His soul inspires me to be my best. Daddy is my confidant and my teacher. Not just in my school studies, but my teacher in life” Jaxyn told VICE.
