With summer turning into autumn, and autumn quickly shifting into winter, we’re in dire need for some inspiration to get out of bed and get going. Thankfully, Jena Holliday has got our back, with illustrations, quotes, and mantras that aim to help us overcome our creative slump. Based in Minneapolis, Holliday relies on her background as a graphic artist, illustrator, wife, and mother of two to inspire other people, with women being her primary focus.

“Get out of your own way,” reads one of her Instagram posts. “Get out of your head. Get it on to paper. Work through the doubt. Work through the unknown. Work through uncomfortable moments. Try things you are holding yourself back from doing. Make all the mistakes necessary for you to learn how to keep getting back up. It will help you in the long run.”

“It always seems impossible until it’s done,” reads another quote. “This quote is so encouraging to my heart to remember how I felt before I did it,” adds Holliday underneath her post. “Getting used to that feeling of being uncomfortable is actually the best soil for growth. My encouragement to you is to keep taking steps forward even if they are baby steps! Small progress is still progress.”

In 2019, Holliday received the Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant which was a great opportunity for her to showcase her work in the Minnesota community. And with more than 10k followers on Instagram, she has clearly inspired lots of people to take steps forward.

With all that negativity going around on social media, we could all use a little positive energy. Stacie Swift’s illustrated quotes and notes might just be that extra something. It’s the Instagram guide we needed but didn’t deserve.

Combining hand-drawn images and type, Swift creates relatable content that packs a punch. It’s little wonder that her Instagram page has amassed well over 200k followers. “I’d like to think that my sentimental nature and sense of humor come across in my work so hopefully they are representative of those elements of my personality,” she told The Smuggler.

“All of my work starts out as a rough idea in a sketchbook or on a loose sheet of paper,” she explained her process. “I’m not one of these people who have beautifully presented sketchbooks! Scribbled roughs are usually followed by some internet research for image references from which I begin to make pencil drawings. When I am happy with those I reproduce a final version of the drawing in black fineliner and scan the images into Photoshop to color, edit and compose my finished artwork.”

Aside from illustration and calligraphy art, she also enjoys content creation and has collaborated with various companies. Her designs vary from social media content to pin badges and playing cards. “When I was very little I wanted to be a hot dog lady,” she admitted. “I hadn’t even considered illustration as an option until I was almost 20 and when I was 23 that I went back to study illustration.”

It’s a good thing she had. Take a look at some of her work in the gallery below:

We get it, life can be hard and trying to prove yourself to others – even harder. But why not try a different approach: being easier on your self. Self-taught writer and artist Meera Lee Patel hopes to inspire you to try, try again. And even more importantly: make peace with yourself.

Her many projects include book illustrations, textile & print licensing, stationery collections, and writing pieces about mental health and emotional well-being. But what really made us fall in love with Patel is her Instagram page which is an upliftingly wholesome haven in a sea of self-promotion and beauty gurus.

“I am interested in projects that add beauty to the world; help people feel more like themselves, and remind us of the oft-overlooked moments in our livesbecause they are usually the best ones,” she writes on her website. “I am interested in exploring the intricacies of human connection, and I use my work to unearth the small yet vibrant stories found in everyday life. Like you, I have many worlds inside of me. I am sensitive but tough. I am pragmatic but free. I am a dreamer. I hope my work will always serve as a simple reminder: you are not alone.”

“What you can control lies within yourself: your thoughts and attitudes, your wishes and desires, and the perspective you choose to live by,” she adds in an interview with Freelance Wisdom. “We often blame our fear for keeping us from moving forward, but it’s our perspective of fear that truly holds power—it can imbibe us with strength and courage, or it can slowly destroy us. If you believe that everything that happens to you holds a lesson, you’ll be better equipped to find the lesson and learn from it. If you believe that there is purpose and meaning in difficult, you’ll find beauty in the obstacles you face.”

We all could use a little mood lifter from time to time, and Candace Reels’ Instagram page, the Female Collective, promises to do just that. Providing empowering mantras and uplifting memes, her page outgrew it’s humble beginnings very quickly.

With more the 350 thousand followers, the Female Collective is now an online community and philanthropic organization, cultivating self love and female empowerment.

Talking about the reason behind her inspiring project, Reel said in an interview with Create & Cultivate: “I was at a really low point in my life and I needed something to motivate myself to the next step on my life journey. I didn’t know what that would be, but I knew that I needed to create something from my lack of inspiration. That’s when I decided to create an Instagram account where I would post inspiring and motivating content to help get my life together.”

“I’m using my experience and journey of self love to help all women on their own journey of feeling empowered, celebrated, uplifted, and supported on a daily basis,” she wrote on her website. “As self love is not a destination, but an everyday practice.”
