]]>The more you scroll through his page, the more it becomes clear why he’s so popular. First off, his technique is simply impeccable. You don’t have to be an art expert to see that this man is incredibly skilled, and this serves as the foundation for all of his success.
However, his popularity is also about a lot more than just his technical proficiency. Howlett, as we already mentioned, has a unique style. His surrealist paintings often tell stories of giants walking amongst lofty mountains, or else laying down amongst them as well. He also tends to paint portraits of women who how somehow fused with the trees around them.
If these descriptions seem confusing, that’s because the paintings are the kinds of things you have to experience firsthand. So check out Howlett’s page and see how amazing they are for yourself!

]]>Growing up, Merriam’s home was the epitome of innovation and creativity. “Our house was full of a variety of musical instruments,” he relays in his bio, posted on his personal website. “We often sat around the kitchen table and sketched on paper bags until they were covered inside and out with pictures of anything we could imagine,” he adds. “Hours were spent in my father’s woodworking shop, carving toy boats and other fun things to play with.”
With music, woodshop carving, and illustrating all parts of his childhood scenery, a passion for art was only a matter of time. At only 15, Merriam entered the Bridgton Art Show and won first place in the student category. This was also where he was introduced to artist Alan Magee. “I was amazed by his technique — such great realism, done so simply,” writes Merriam. “I have never been able to match his skills, but I have instead cultivated merits of my own.”
Following his heart and with Magee for inspiration, Merriam would go on to master the art of painting. “There were times when I felt like giving up, but eventually I turned things around by perfecting my artistic talent,” he writes. Good thing he carried on!

I try not to label or think about what is supposed to be, just take it in as it is and paint whatever I see in my mind with no compromise. That way, I create my own vision.”

]]>His love of “stuff” is shown throughout his crowded paintings, that almost burst at the seams with details. “I’ve often said that it is the diversity of my inspirations that most defines my art”, he told Plastik Magazine. “I look at many things for inspiration. I collect lots of things and lots of junk. My studio and house are overflowing with stuff. I collect old children’s books, interesting product packages, toys, photographs, medical models, and religious statues.”
“I also have an extensive collection of books on art,” he said. “I love the old masters more than contemporary art, so most of my books are on artists like Ingres, David, Bronzino, and Carpaccio with just a few contemporaries like Neo Rauch and Loretta Lux.”
Based in Portland, Oregon, his paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide. But if you haven’t got the chance to see his work in person, be sure to follow his Instagram page.

According to his website, the series “explores the blurring of lines between the truth and lies that have become prevalent in recent years.
