If there’s one thing we’re missing in these uncertain times, it’s international travel. As we get used to a new normal, we test the waters when it comes to new traveling experiences. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, traveler preferences and behaviors have shifted toward low risk, familiar, predictable, and trusted. Travelers are prioritizing independence and authenticity and require reassurance to travel safely.

However, when we finally do return to our favorite pastime, we already have a tour guide in mind. Travel blogger Liz Carlson lives up to her online moniker—the Young Adventuress. With more than a decade of traveling under her belt—and most of it alone—Carlson encourages other women to try independent traveling.

In fact, she even has a blog post, scratch that—a manifesto—about it. “Without sounding incredibly cheesy, I think my happiest moments are when I get emails and messages from readers asking advice about traveling the world, alone, female or otherwise,” says Carlson.

The first thing you should take in mind is that it’s not half as scary as you might think. “For the number of times I legitimately felt in danger, I can give you 1000 examples of beautiful, friendly, and unique moments that surprised me to no end while traveling,” she writes.

With more than 200k followers on Instagram, people are clearly taking note.

2020 has been one hell of a ride. The pandemic has changed the way we work, eat, and move about our day to day. It has also changed the way we travel. But while air travel sunk to an all-time low, the pandemic has fueled interest in recreational vehicles—RVs, campervans, and travel trailers. According to a recent report, RV sales are up a whopping 170 percent.

When it comes to van life, traveling duo Katie and Ben have been ahead of the curve. The high school sweethearts-turned-full-time-travelers have been vacationing since 2014, with their adventures taking many shapes and forms. “We’ve been through a lot together,” they write on their website, “awkward teenage years, college, long-distance, traveling together 24/7—and at the end of it all, we still sorta like each other,” they add, jokingly.

This summer is W I E R D, no doubt about it, but campervan travel has been kind of amazing. We’ve been able to basically avoid as much human interaction as possible (which I never thought I’d intentionally do, but here we are). We can cook for ourselves. We don’t need to stay in hotels. We can avoid most public bathrooms. It’s kind of perfect right now. . And we’ve still found ways to do things we normally would on trips… — 🍻 We love going to breweries, but instead of ordering beer on site, we got 6-packs to-go from a couple different breweries in Jackson Hole and taste tested from our van! — 🦀 And when we were on the Oregon Coast we really wanted to sample the famous clam chowders and fish and chips along the way, so we ordered takeout and enjoyed the local specialties from inside our perfectly cozy “dining room”. — ☕ We’re obsessed with morning coffee, so we’ve been brewing it ourselves in the van and finding pretty spots to park where we can enjoy it. . The kind of crazy thing is we bought our van in early February, back when life was “normal”. And we had been planning the purchase for about a year before that. But serendipitously this is the only way we’ll be traveling for the foreseeable future it seems. . I read somewhere that some 25 million Americans have bought a campervan or RV this summer. And if you’ve been thinking about it, let us know what questions or hesitations you still have… We’re happy to help because we know it’s a big decision. — P.S. Swipe to compare our fancy kitchen in Pearl to the one we had in our previous build. Same cute chef 🥰 but now he doesn’t have to sit while he cooks!

“The kind of crazy thing is we bought our van in early February, back when life was ‘normal,'” they reflected in a recent Instagram post. “And we had been planning the purchase for about a year before that. But serendipitously this is the only way we’ll be traveling for the foreseeable future it seems.”

Now, they hope to share their knowledge with others, teaching the ins and outs of van traveling. According to the seasoned couple, the big advantage of van life is you can avoid as much human interaction as possible. “We can cook for ourselves. We don’t need to stay in hotels. We can avoid most public bathrooms. It’s kind of perfect right now,” they note.

Thoughts on making big life choices… . Last year we made the decision to base ourselves more permanently in the US. It was exactly 1 year ago today that we rolled up with boxes & suitcases in Bend, Oregon. Nervous and excited. . While moving to Bend was far from the craziest decision we’ve made, it was still kind of a leap. It was a place we had only spent 2 days many years ago. A place where we didn't know a single person. . After 6+ years of essentially living out of backpacks and not staying anywhere longer than 1 year, we were hoping this move would make us feel more rooted & less transient. . This year has been, well, a shitshow. And a lot of our dreams for living in this new place didn’t go even remotely as planned. After a year, I don’t know if we honestly feel more rooted or not… . But I can say this: I'm proud that we continue to make big decisions that make us feel nervous and excited. Because the decisions we've made that people have called crazy have led to the most beautiful parts of our lives. And there have been so many beautiful parts of living here. . I once heard someone give this advice on making big decisions and it really resonated with me… . When torn between two big life choices, ask yourself, "Which decision will 80-year-old me still be telling stories about?" . More often than not, it'll be the choice that makes your heart race a little… and sometimes that’s just the push you need. . What big life decisions have made your heart race?

Yesterday was a bad day. But today is looking better. . If you saw our Instagram stories, you know that we had our brand new mountain bikes stolen from the back of our van. Two locks cut. . It really sucks. There’s no other way to say it. We had just bought the bikes (saved up a bit for them 🤑) and were excited to get into this new hobby. It took us about a month of searching to actually get the bikes (they’re sold out pretty much everywhere because a lot of factories have been shut down). And so it stings a little more knowing we probably won’t be able to get new bikes this year. . Sometimes I process emotions by making lists (is that weird?!)… so here’s a list I made about yesterday’s incident: 1. Can 2020 just be over already?! 😭🙈 #butforreal 2. We are safe. The van was not harmed. For that, we are grateful. (And for those who’ve asked, no we were not inside the van when they were stolen, thankfully.) 3. This is such a small thing to be upset about in the midst of everything going on in the world right now. 4. But as many sweet souls reminded me in DMs, it is still valid to be upset. 5. It’s funny because people always ask if we’re worried traveling abroad, but the only times we’ve had things stolen have been in our home country 🇺🇸 6. People can be shitty. But they can also be so, so good. We’ve been flooded with kind messages, people offering to help search, and just being overall wonderful. And it really brightened an otherwise crappy day. So thank you. 7. If we get bikes in the future, we’re gonna have a badass security system on the van! 8. I hope that sharing this little not-so-pretty side of #vanlife doesn’t scare anyone away. But I do think it’s important to share the bad as well as those picture-perfect moments. Because there are definitely ups AND downs. . And yes, we have insurance. We’re crossing our fingers that the coverage is decent so we can save up for new bikes for next year 🤞🏼 . [📷 last pic of our bikes on the van 😞😭]

According to the US Travel Association, since the beginning of March, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in over $396 billion in cumulative losses for the U.S. travel economy.

Travel bloggers know best. Having visited over 100 countries over 13 years, Brenna Holeman doesn’t just treat travel as a form of vacation but as a passion turned into a full-time job. Originally from Winnipeg, a city in the Canadian prairies, she has lived in Halifax, Toronto, Copenhagen, Yaroslavl, Edinburgh, Osaka, and London.

Where would you go if you could go anywhere?⁣ 🌎🌍🌏⁣ ⁣⁣ I’ve always loved that question, loved the idea of wanderlust taking over, allowing your imagination to run wild. I’d go to Antarctica, or maybe sail around the South Pacific. I’d travel to Madagascar, Uzbekistan, Ghana. I’d spend a few weeks in Suriname and Guyana. I’d head to Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan with my boyfriend, our first big adventure together. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Where would you go if you could go anywhere?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The question has a different meaning to me now. Travel itself has a different meaning to me now. What used to excite and inspire now makes me feel nervous, cautious. While the world slowly opens back up, with some people venturing to other countries, provinces, or states, I’m still not comfortable travelling outside of my home province of Manitoba. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ There are many reasons for this, of course: COVID-19 and cost being the two big ones. I spent over a decade working toward this career, and as a travel writer, it’s bittersweet that the thing I love to do most and the way I make my living is now out of reach to me. Even if I did want to use my savings on a big adventure instead of paying my mortgage and bills, I’d worry too much about the health risks and bringing COVID-19 back to my community (for reference, Manitoba had one (!) active case in mid-July, but cases have since skyrocketed due to travel outside the province). ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It’s all so complicated, isn’t it? To travel, or not to travel. One thing’s for sure: the way we travel may not be the same for a very long time. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’d still love to go to Antarctica, of course, and Madagascar, too. My list isn’t going anywhere, and I know that one day, I’ll be able to see these places. But for now, my list is much smaller. I dream of wild camping in Nopiming Provincial Park. I dream of being able to see my mum in Toronto, my brother in Vancouver. COVID-19 has devastated the travel industry, but from that, I’ve learned to appreciate what’s closer to home, what’s just around the proverbial corner. ⁣✨⁣ ⁣⁣ Where would you go if you could go anywhere? Are you travelling abroad or inter-province/state yet?

A post shared by Brenna Holeman (@thisbatteredsuitcase) on

But 2020 has driven her back home. “At the moment I have absolutely zero desire to travel outside of Canada, or even to another province,” she explained in a recent post on Instagram, adding that the thought of traveling to a higher-risk location or being in close quarters with tourists who haven’t quarantined makes her itch.

“It’s all so complicated, isn’t it?” she adds. “To travel, or not to travel. One thing’s for sure: the way we travel may not be the same for a very long time.⁣⁣” For Holeman, the solution was simple: travel – but do it closer to home. According to Holeman, she will be road-tripping, hiking, canoeing, fishing, camping, and supporting local businesses. Which doesn’t sound quite as bad as staying home.

“I was in talks with Travel Manitoba over a year ago that I would spend this summer traveling around this beautiful province, and that is indeed happening,” she explains. “While I’ve already been to Bird River as well as Winnipeg Beach, Pinawa Dam, and Birds Hill Provincial Parks in the past month, I’m soon headed to Brandon, Swan Valley, and Riding Mountain National Park for a Manitoba series with Travel Manitoba.”

We encourage you to follow her journey – online that is.

Still can't get over this summer in Manitoba ✨ I recently had the opportunity to explore the Interlake region of the province, checking out Gimli and Hecla Island (both found on Lake Winnipeg, one of the biggest lakes in Canada). My memories of Gimli came flooding back to me; I had gone often as a kid, but to visit again as an adult was so much fun… all of my childhood favourites were still there (you can’t beat H.P. Tergesen’s General Store) but I saw it all through new eyes, too, stopping for coffee at Flatland's and pickerel tacos at The Ship and Plough. I’m about to head off on a totally new adventure – I’m going to Namibia for the next three weeks – and the strangest thing happened before I left. When I used to travel from London, it was always a countdown until the departure date, always a chance to get away and see something new. I never, ever felt sad about leaving London or that I’d miss it while I was gone; it was always about the adventure ahead. This time, however, knowing I am leaving #Manitoba for three weeks… I feel sad. I have never, ever felt this before I’ve travelled. Don’t get me wrong, I am crazy excited to head to Namibia, a country that has long topped my dream travel list. It’s just that, locking up my house, I knew I’d miss it. I knew I’d miss my friends and family. I knew I’d miss my office and garden. I knew I’d miss the freedom and happiness I’ve felt all summer, one of the best summers of my entire life. Sixteen years ago, when I thought I was leaving Manitoba for good, I could have never predicted how much I’d fall back in love with it. This summer of beaches and festivals and so many adventures has humbled me, humbled that attitude I used to have about my home province. Now? I can’t imagine living anywhere else. I am so excited to share even more of Manitoba with you, because it is seriously underrated. I barely scraped the surface of everything there is to do here, and I can’t wait to see more. I hope you’ll come find out for yourself, too. ✨ Many thanks to @travelmanitoba for sponsoring this beautiful trip to the Interlake region, and for helping me see what was in front of me this whole time. ❤ #travelmanitoba #exploremb

Of all the things I could have predicted for my life, I can tell you that I didn't predict this: I didn't expect to move back to my hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and fall so madly in love with it. When I was a kid, I wanted to be anywhere but home. It didn't matter where that home was. It could have been Paris or Melbourne or Timbuktu; I simply knew I wanted to go out and explore the world as much as possible, and exploring the world meant leaving home. Now, 16 years after I first left Winnipeg, I've decided to spend much more time here; it's where my family is, firstly, and it's also, as cheesy as it sounds, where my heart is. There's something to be said about travelling; sometimes, it makes you realise just how great home really is. It also helps that Winnipeg is going through a massive Renaissance right now… between all of the new things to do – museums, festivals, restaurants, breweries, bars, and events – and the sense of pride I feel from everyone (this is surely helped by the fact that the Winnipeg Jets are in the NHL playoffs at the moment 🎉), I am ON BOARD. Every single person I speak to who lives in Winnipeg agrees, and we are all here for it, we are all excited to be in this city that is buzzing with energy and cool things to do. One of the best things I've done in the past few months in Winnipeg is the Hermetic Code tour at the Legislative Building. "A tour?" you might be thinking, but trust me, you do NOT want to miss this one. This is one of the best tours I've been on in my life, hands down. Dr. Frank Albo shows you that this isn't any ordinary building, and whatever you think you knew about it, you're probably wrong (including what you may think you know about our infamous Golden Boy). And if you're like me, as soon as you hear the word "occult", you know some crazy stories are about to unfold. I don't want to say too much more about it and ruin the surprise, but between what you learn and how charismatic and knowledgable Dr. Albo is, if you're in Winnipeg you simply have to take this tour. Have you ever been to Winnipeg? Tell me about your hometown! #sponsored by @travelmanitoba #exploremb #manitoba #winnipeg

2020 was a bad one. But if the pandemic taught us anything at all its to never take the things we have for granted. Moving around for instance… If there’s one thing we’re looking forward to after all of this is over (and it will be over!) is our vacations abroad.

In the meanwhile, sip on some home squeezed orange juice and enjoy some armchair travel, courtesy of  It’s Beautiful Here. The online travel platform is dedicated to the magic and beauty of travel, offering travel guides and recommendations beautifully curated by Georgia (Gigi) Hopkins.

“I am a travel curator,” relayed Hopkins in an interview with Vogue. “I create travel content and experiences for global brands and likeminded folk. I travel the world searching for unique, interesting and beautiful places and experiences to share.”

“Life is a constant adventure,” she adds, “I love the freedom travel brings and the people I am fortunate enough to meet along the way. I love the random nature of it all. I feel forever in a state of awe and inspiration over the amazing things so many people out there are doing. I feel lucky to be living out my greatest passion.”

Her Instagram page for one thing has a become a source of comfort, reminding us that there is plenty of beauty in the world that is yet to be discovered.

For the first time in history, two art lovers will have a unique chance to experience a real night at the museum. The rental site, Airbnb, will take two lucky people to Paris and open doors to none other than the most famous museum in the world – the Louvre – for one whole night.  People who enter this contest, will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to spend the night in the Louvre and sleep under the iconic glass pyramid!

The stay will take place on April 30, when two guests will be greeted by a historian who will take them on a tour. The lucky winners will be the first ones to see the most famous works of art, like iconic Mona Lisa, in private, without thousands of tourists around. They’ll be offered an intimate dinner with the Venus of Milo, the Greek goddess of love and beauty and later they’ll visit Napoleon’s chambers and enjoy a private acoustic concert. The guests will spend the night in a pyramid-shaped bedroom and treated to a Parisian breakfast in bed once they wake up.

The only thing you need to do, if you want to enter this interesting contest, is to go to Airbnb official site and answer this question – Why would you be the Mona Lisa’s perfect guest?

Nico and Lau are a couple of young and adventurous people who sold everything they owned in order to fulfill a dream they both shared – to travel the world. They’ve been together for three years and the last year they spent visiting countries around the world.

Their desire to see as much as the world has to offer comes from a deep, and not so happy place. In his twenties, Nico thought he wanted to be a lawyer, but once he was diagnosed with a cancer, his entire life changed. Fortunately, after all the treatments he fully recovered and decided to live every day to the fullest.

Lau considers herself a simple and positive person who loves to dance. She also had a hard time after losing two family members. Ever since then, she has only one rule in her life: “Live every day as if it was the last”.

“We want to live, we want to experiment, we want to do new things. When we travel, we feel free.” Nico and Lau wrote on their website. “We love to immerse ourselves in culture, smells, and customs. We enjoy talking to strangers and understanding their world. We marvel when we are lucky enough to see the most impressive places on the planet. We love going to a supermarket or taking local transport, something we hate when we have to do it in Buenos Aires.”

The international phenomenon that is Hello Kitty just went super-hi-tech when Japan unveiled a Hello Kitty-themed bullet train. The astonishingly-bedecked high-speed train will run between the western cities of Osaka and Fukuoka and is bedecked in true Hello Kitty style, complete with signature pink and white color scheme, fluffy seats and purple floors.

The West Japan Railway company, which hopes to draw thousands of tourists to the train, has branded the train’s windows, seat covers, and even the floors with Hello Kitty designs.

One of the train’s carriages features a huge Hello Kitty doll dressed up in a unique uniform for the train’s crew. Here, visiting fans will have the chance to pose for pictures next to their favorite character. The first carriage will have no seats, but offer passengers the opportunity to buy regional items and food from the west of Japan.

Hello Kitty was created in 1974 by Yuko Shimizu, and has since seen worldwide adoration for the cute little character. The Hello Kitty brand can be found on just about any kind of item, from airplanes to motor oil, and toilet paper to key chains. The brand is now estimated to worth several billion dollars.
