The world is so full of beautiful art by talented artists, which makes it very difficult to create something completely new. But Vincent Bal, an artist and filmmaker from Belgium, has managed to do just that. Bal created a style he called “Shadowlogy” – drawing with pens and shadows.

Vincent’s process is simple: he takes everyday objects and places them on paper. He then incorporates these object’s shadow into the drawing and draws characters that interact with them. The final product is as much a game as it is art: without the object to cast a shadow on the paper, the doodles seem incomplete, and probably a bit confusing. But then, once you put the object back on the paper, its shadow completes the picture.

Vincent seems to be inspired by everything around him. So many different objects are used in his drawings: empty water bottles, tiny plant pots, all kinds of fruits, scissors and glasses, to name a few. The drawings are just as imaginative as they are unique – they include people, animals, and landscapes. The one thing all of them have in common is Vincent’s style of drawing which is simple and funny, a lot like the cartoons we can find in newspapers.

Creativity may not require as much as you think. The important part is the thought process itself. Belgian filmmaker and “shadowologist”, Vincent Bal, employs the use of shadows in creating his artworks.

He does his artwork by using long shadows made by everyday objects, and uses these shadows as part of his drawings. In other words, the shadows are used to form up his drawings. The combination of the shadow with the drawing results in a meaningful art piece. For example, using the shadow of a light bulb to draw a full grown man.
