Sometimes, the more literal you art, the further you are from the truth. Truth, as it turns out, can be found in abstract concepts as much as anyplace else, and oftentimes – more accurately. Such is Maysha Mohamedi’s abstract art.

Based in Los Angeles, Mohamedi’s art translates complex ideas and observations into shapes and colors. “I want to make paintings that feel very true,” she remarked once in an interview with Matter of Hand. “I think I can do that if I don’t control the inception of the idea very much. I’m sort of like a semipermeable membrane; I just look at what’s around me, watch the thoughts that I have, listen to my children, listen to the air. I’m this filter for whatever’s happening around me.”

Her Iranian heritage also plays an important role and is present in the materials themselves. Mohamedi noted that in some cases she uses tubes of Middle Eastern paint imported from Iran. “Up until now I’ve mainly used oil paint,” she added, “but I’m starting to use more materials that are handy like pencils, crayons, and acrylic paint; anything that’s easy to apply and dries quickly.”

The process itself relies on intuition as much as it does on planning. “Everything inspires me,” stresses Mohamedi, talking about her sources of creative inspiration. “I’m a sponge and a filter.” Her work has been profiled in publications such as the LA Times and Huffington Post, on top of a substantial following online.

Abstract artist Alexey Luka describes his work as “an everyday diary.” According to him, his work is a chronicle of what he sees around him, around his friends. But if it serves as a diary, it’s one that’s hard – no, impossible – to decipher.

“My works are like a puzzle,” admitted the Russian artist in an interview with Another Fine Mess, “people try to find different recognizable shapes that are mixed with abstract geometry. It could be anything, a man walking with his dog, or a large family waiting for their lunch. There is always a story to be found in my works. I try to show typical situations from a different angle.”

His work entails a process of composition and decomposition — a style that was inspired by constructivism and neo-plasticism. Based on abstract shapes and chromatic variations, Luka’s creative language is also informed by his background in architecture.

Though there’s an overall coherence in his undeciphered language, Luka’s methods and techniques vary and include spray paints, acrylic paints, sculpting, and collage art. Each piece begins with a sketch on paper. It is only when the sketch is done that Luka chooses the technique he prefers for realizing his idea.

The result, though puzzling, is worth looking into.

Kirstine Reiner’s unique style of painting was born out of playful experimentation. With a BA in Design and Illustration, the Danish painter (currently based in Berlin), spent a decade painting strictly realistic artworks, before letting loose of her restrictions.

“Something that started almost as an exercise had become my style, which wasn’t actually intended,” she told Jung Katz. “I started painting this way out of a need to learn the basics of painting so that I could one day work in a looser style,” she explained. “So it became a means to an end so to speak and a challenge to see if I could master the techniques of the old masters.”

According to Reiner, what began as a challenge turned into a rigid form of painting that didn’t reflect her thoughts and feelings. Change was inevitable. “I decided that now everything was fair game, photographic source material, appropriation of imagery, using whichever materials, working from the computer screen and so on,” says Reiner. “So I turned around and did the opposite of what I used to do.”

Her experimentational style challenges the restrictions of realism but does so with a wink and a smile. Reiner herself describes her newfound style as “realism tumbles with cubism.” Her mixed-media approach involves appropriating images from magazines and advertising as a visual reference and conjoining these images with art historical elements in collage-like formations.

Her looser style also leaves room for creative interpretation. “What I  hope for, is for people to create their own narratives,” says Reiner, “that they hopefully look at the work for more than a glance.”

There’s bliss to be found in pure, uncontained mess. Such bliss can also be found in Kim Carlino’s abstract art. Shifts of scale, opticality, illusion, and a happy mishmash of colors and mediums are all to be expected within her work. Upon reflection, Carlino describes it as a “deep internal/external space exploration meets topographical geometric interventionism.”

She treats her work as an arena in which pattern and form engage and accentuate the contradictions, opposites, and contrasts that exist in this fabricated world. With the aim to create organic, fluid-like forms, she likes her tools to have high-flow capabilities, such as watercolor, inks, and high-flow acrylics. But her toolbox also includes oil-based markers, graphite, sharpies, and even spray paint and stencils.

Working on nonporous surfaces, she floats watercolor, ink and high-flow acrylic into the surface of the water and into each other to cause interactions of materials and pigment that create granulation, striated edges, and floating islands of color. As this dries and evaporates, everything settles and the form emerges, an image formulated from pure, blissful chaos.

“I am interested in materials that have different surface qualities from matte or glossy to metallic or somewhere in between,” she told Jung Katz. “I work on nontraditional, paper-like surfaces such as yupo, duralar, acetate, and tyvek. My best friend is my compass and ruler collection.”

Mark Keffer is one fascinating artist. His work seems to revolve around the unexpected symbiosis of the night sky and electric circuits. The result is as intriguing as it is visually pleasing.

“I think of my painting as a kind of mirror being held up to the viewer to serve as an arena for introspection,” Keffer told ArtLife Magazine. “The painting is you. If the viewer can put aside simple impulses of ‘interpretation’ they might allow themselves the opportunity to look inward.”

He added, “The painting is also me as well, which is what hopefully makes for the non-verbal transmission that I hope occurs.”

Most of Keffer’s paintings consist of a dark background representing the night, often dotted with white “stars”, and colorful geometrical shapes in the foreground that bring to mind what’s inside our favorite gadgets. They are at once natural and artificial, warm and cold.

“I hope the viewer of my work will take away some semblance of an experience such as observing the night sky, but with the addition of the compromising effects of human activity,” Keffer shared.

Although Keffer had held a variety of day jobs, including teaching at universities, he decided to concentrate solely on his art. “So now I basically just paint, and make no money,” he shrugged. “I tell myself it’s a valuable contribution to humanity.”
