Doll designer Lidiya Marinchuk lives in Kyiv, Ukraine, and she’s perfected the art of making tiny, expressive characters that come in bright colors and googly eyes. From animals to clouds and inanimate objects, her dolls are as versatile as they are adorable.

Marinchuk shows her work on Instagram under the brand Marlitoys, and over 60,000 people follow her work there. She sells her dolls on Etsy, and besides her original designs, you can request a custom order or message her for collaborations.

Among her whimsical creations are many trendy and seasonal characters, such as the ones inspired by Christmas, popular shows like Squid Game, and much more. But our favorites are all the lovely animals she makes with a lot of love. They look like they could be cartoon characters and as such are an amazing gift for any kid (or adult who’s still a kid inside).

Her message on her Etsy profile reads like this: “Hello to all! My name is Lidiya. I live and create my MarLi toys in Ukraine since 2012. I want to make the world more colorful, to give people [a] good mood and a bit of magic. My creations are for people from 0 to 100 years.”

Mass-produced dolls based on famous characters or celebrities don’t look like their real-life counterparts in most cases. This is why Spanish “doll face maker” Francisco Roldan decided to do something about it.

Roldan has been fascinated by dolls since a young age, but the poor quality of the products always bothered him. So, in 2015, he decided to see whether he could do better. He bought several low-budget dolls and reworked them to look more realistic.

His first projects proved to be a success, and he quickly realized he could do even better with practice. Roldan continued to hone his craft and quickly attracted attention on social media thanks to his well-executed reparations.

Before he knew it, Roldan was transforming dolls for collectors, who wanted their pieces to be more realistic. What started as a curiosity hobby turned into a full-time job that he enjoys.

“Collectors are usually shocked by the transformations of their dolls, they know my work beforehand, and they know for sure that they will get a piece to suit them,” said the artist in a recent interview.

Anastasiya and Sergey Lutsenko are a couple from Russia who has been making handmade, realistic-looking dolls for eight years now.

According to the duo, they are both graduates in classical art, who later moved to graphic design. The Lutsenkos seek their inspiration from the people who stand out from the crowd. However, they don’t make dolls with portrait resemblance.

“We draw our inspiration from everyday life,” the couple shared on Bored Panda. “It is always interesting to watch people and find some character types that stand out from the crowd. Each doll has its own history and is one of a kind. It is fundamentally important for us to use decorative elements [and carving] that are unique for each doll.”

They share their astonishing dolls on their Instagram account called lutsenko_dolls where they have gathered a following of over 269 thousand followers and have thousands of likes on each post.

Snapchat filters, photoshop and facetune, are unattainable beauty standards. They make you think that natural beauty no longer exists. It is true that makeup and clothing items are a form or self-expression and art, but sometimes a natural look is needed. This standard of beauty also affects inanimate objects such as dolls as well.

Olga Kamenetskaya, an Austrian artist, is making a statement by removing makeup from the doll faces and making it look more natural. She also removes some features to make it more proportional. Olga believes that dolls are flawed like humans. She changes the features and transforms the face shapes while adding new wigs.

The artist believes that a doll face should not be perfectly symmetrical because it makes it lifeless. She purposely leaves a flaw that may not even be noticeable to everybody. However, this gives the dolls invisible charisma, and this flawed beauty is what she hopes to throw light on.
