Throughout the years I’ve explored various art media and the many techniques and approaches to each. The one I keep going back to seems to raise the most questions: OIL DRY BRUSH ON CLEAR GESSOED LINEN. This has become my signature media over the years, and is often mistaken for charcoal drawing on toned paper. Hard to tell from a little square photo on a small screen, but the difference between them is felt in person. In an effort to demystify this approach (I get so many DM questions pertaining to) I’ve been going through the process of what’s involved in one of my works and I’ve turned it into a highlight on my profile. Breaking down the process, how to correct errors, how I see the subject, and all captured in oil paint on linen. This medium is not forgiving! You cannot paint over it, and you cannot erase it. So if you make a mistake you have to really push yourself creatively to find ways to fix them. It is the one approach that destroys my body more than any other. You need to work fast to lift paint out, and not let it set until it’s just right. You need quick hand movements to blend smoothly. It takes a massive tole on me physically (have to ice my hands and wrists after each session), but I’m obsessed with it as a medium. I love the pressure of no error margine. I love the way it forces me to see and think creatively in terms of process and not just subject. I love that it is both loose and refined at the same time. I can be very stubborn and obsessive and yes, a control freak, and this medium forces me to be more malleable when things don’t go my way. It teaches me adaptability. It gives me a unique push and pull relationship with the artwork. I can never force my way on it, it has to happen how it’s going to happen. Sometimes the medium we choose to create in isn’t for the end result. Sometimes it’s for the pure joy of process. • Crop of current work in progress. Oil on clear gessoed Belgian linen.

“I’m sure you can learn a ton from art school,” she relayed in an interview with Jung Katz, “but it depends on what you want to take from art, and where you want to go with it that should determine whether or not it’s for you. For me, I couldn’t imagine being ‘taught’ art. It’s one of the only free things in this world and I’ve personally gained so much from having the artistic process be 100% my own journey, untainted from outside influence.”

But with both her parents being artists, you could argue that she didn’t have much of a choice. “Art is life,” she puts it, simply. “Art is my breath, my escape, my happy place. Art is my own safe haven in a hectic world. It’s where I go to hide from it all, and is also where I go to enjoy it all.”

Judging by her massive online following (that includes more than 345k fans on Instagram), other people are enjoying her paintings just as well. How many shades of blue are there? Judging by Zaria Forman’s hyperrealistic paintings, too many to count. Focusing mainly on icebergs as they converge with oceans, her landscapes document the jarring effects of climate change.

“I hope my drawings can facilitate a deeper understanding of the climate crisis, helping us find meaning and optimism in shifting landscapes,” Forman shared with ArtStar. “I hope they can serve as records of landscapes in flux, documenting the transition, and inspiring our global community to take action for the future.”

Her paintings, made using pastel colors almost exclusively, very much rely on her observations. Traveling to remote regions of the world, Forman collects images and inspiration which she then takes back to Brooklyn.

Her project took her around the globe, and she has even flown with NASA on several Operation IceBridge missions over Antarctica, Greenland, and Arctic Canada. “In all my travels I have never experienced a landscape as epic and pristine as Antarctica,” she says. “I still haven’t found the words to properly convey the majesty and ethereal wonder of that icy continent!”

Exhibited worldwide, her work is also featured in publications like The New York TimesNational Geographic, and The Wall Street Journal. Scroll down to see some of her paintings.

Joongwon Jeong is a South Korean artist who specializes in creating large hyperrealistic paintings that you’d swear are photographs!

But as if painting a picture so minutely that it’s almost impossible to tell apart from a photo isn’t hard enough, Jeong has added another level of difficulty for himself by choosing to give the hyperrealistic treatment to people who never had their picture taken, or some that we’re not even sure ever existed in the first place!

“I try to use as much reference as possible,” he explained his process in an interview to Star2.com. “Photographs are my major reference, but I also use live models and even drawings.”

In one particularly stunning case, Jeong created a magnificent portrait of the legendary Greek poet Homer. Not only are scholars not entirely certain that Homer was a real person, but his only surviving likenesses are statues. How could Jeong create such a lifelike painting out a largely featureless piece of stone?

“Since I could not rely solely on my imagination to come up with the lifelike image of the ancient poet, I found a model who had a similar facial feature with the bust of Homer,” he confided. “And then I combined the image of his real face with the face of the marble bust. The general facial structure was strictly based on the bust.”

The result speaks for itself, and luckily so, as we were left speechless!

<The Story of the Death of Seneca / 세네카의 죽음에 관한 이야기>⁣⁣ ⁣ Lucius Annaeus Seneca was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman and dramatist. He was a tutor and advisor to emperor Nero, until he ran out of the tyrant's favour and was eventually ordered to take his own life. His death, which is notably famous for its dramatic quality along with that of Socrates, is recorded in detail by Tacitus;⁣⁣ ⁣ ‘Seneca, as his aged frame, attenuated by frugal diet, allowed the blood to escape but slowly, severed also the veins of his legs and knees. (…)⁣⁣ ⁣ ‘Seneca meantime, as the tedious process of death still lingered on, begged Statius Annaeus, whom he had long esteemed for his faithful friendship and medical skill, to produce a poison with same drug which extinguished the life of those who were condemned by a public sentence of the people of Athens. It was brought to him and he drank it in vain, chilled as he was throughout his limbs, and his frame closed against the efficacy of the poison. At last he entered a pool of heated water, from which he sprinkled the nearest of his slaves, adding the exclamation, "I offer this liquid as a libation to Jupiter the Deliverer." He was then carried into a bath, with the steam of which he was suffocated, and he was burnt without any of the usual funeral rites.’

Realism drawings which sometimes are referred to as naturalism, aim at representing the reference image well, without additions to it. It is a rare form of art because not every artist can bring pictures to life in an astonishing way.

The images displayed here are those of Hermaes, as he is called on Instagram, who does realism drawings and paintings. These drawings are keenly detailed with focus on the tiniest detail that you would never notice. Their resolutions are so high that they come out clearer than many pictures.

This artist focuses mainly on makeup pictures. His art is different because he draws them without a specific picture in mind. He highlights makeup in a way that it appears surreal. You can see the contour and eyebrows properly done. Surely some users can learn more about applying makeup from his work.

Below are some of his work. What do you think about them?

Beyond the creativity, art gives room to artists to express their feelings. It provides them with the opportunity to bring to reality the picture they have in mind.

Hyperrealism is not that common in the art world. Only a few artists can bring their portraits to life with a pencil, pen or charcoal.

The images displayed here were drawn by Kelvin Okafor, as named on his Instagram account, who is a British artist from Nigeria.

His drawings are so amazing and stunning. Some of his works were drawn from reference photos. Mr. Okafor drawing far surpasses the reference images in everything. His intricate detailing is amazing, and his fan base keeps growing. Most of his followers eagerly await his hyperrealistic drawings.

Hyperrealism is one of the most amazing art forms. It showcases creativity in the highest form. We have seen other hyperrealists create human portraits, but this artist creates hyperrealistic pictures of animals and objects. His pictures will blow you away.

Young Sung Kim, a Korean artist based in London went viral on social media for creating a hyperrealistic picture of a fish in a glass of water. At a glance, it looks like a picture, but looking closely, it is art. Kim takes videos as he draws to show the progress of his work. And his technique is amazing.

He shares his work on his Instagram page, Twitter feed as well as Facebook. On Instagram, he has more than 170,000 followers. Kim says it takes three to ten months to create each painting and he uses oil paint for his work. We found lots of astonishing artworks, but scroll below for a few of our best picks:

Artist in Focus^^🐠 Young-sung Kims' fascination with art began at a young age, with a 9-year old Kim experimenting with drawing specimens of a cicadas (small jumping bugs). He remembers both the positive emotions associated with the painting and the disappointment he felt when he knew it wasn't the best it could be. This drive for perfectionism is ever present in his work. A manifestation of this search for the ultimate realism, Kim scores his paintings on a 100 point scale every time he finishes one. No painting has passed the 90 mark. Kim employs a staunch methodology which involves drawing and planning for new pieces, taking photographs, preparing the canvas, sketching, drawing and then beginning the painting – initially with small brushes working up to larger and larger – most often for 12 hours per day. "It usually takes 3 to 10 months per piece, my longest took 3 years." His technique with photography, offers an insight into how he creates amazing depth in his paintings. He photographs his small subjects (insects, fish, animals) using the best camera and macro-lens combination, enabling him to capture detail often unseeable to the human eye….. Kei recently posted one of her drawings on Twitter that drew much attention on social media. It was a girl lying in the river, and most of the people were shocked when they realized the painting was just an imagination by the artist. It was so real that many confused it with a photograph. The details and texture are so defined it might be mistaken as a real photo. Take a look at some of her paintings that she created using oil paint.
