Janet Pulcho is a Ukrainian artist who caught the attention of the art world with her amazing floral watercolor paintings. Pulcho’s large-scale paintings are a joy to look at, featuring colorful flowers in full bloom, filling out the entire canvas. This is one of the reasons why her works have been a popular feature in exhibitions around the world and have become quite desirable among private art collectors.

Another major draw of her works is that artists rarely opt to create watercolor paintings on big canvases. Pulcho admits that the process can be quite challenging since she needs to work fast in order to get the best results.

Speaking about her decision to make flowers the main subject of her works, Pulcho says that her goal is to bring some beauty and inspiration to the world.

“I like florals for their esthetics,” she shared in a recent interview. “There is enough ugliness in the world and I believe that my paintings can bring something beautiful and inspiring to other peoples life. I also love to paint watercolor portraits, but I do this really rarely.”

Pulcho, who is currently based in Florence, Italy, regularly shares her newest works on social media. Check out more of them below.

Why do you like fall? Because of the chilly weather, pumpkin spice lattes, or apple pie? Love it or hate it, it is a beautiful season that inspires many great artists, like this Indian artist living and working in Berlin, Germany. Allen Shaw introduces himself as an illustrator and storyteller who has been creating art using colorful fallen leaves.

“Every year, I do a series of illustrations in autumn. Therefore, inspired by the current season this year, I decided to collect leaves, photograph them, and then add watercolor illustrations to express my love for it,” the former animation filmmaker shared on Bored Panda and explained how his artwork is done.

“My medium is essentially watercolors, but for this series, I used photography as the base. After clicking the images, I studied the character of the compositions and then started doing the figures that fit the context of the photos.”

You can enjoy Shaw’s work by checking him on Instagram, where he has attracted almost 8,000 thousand admirers. Besides his leaf-inspired pictures, he depicts other images, as well.

“The pictures which most often inspire me are from movies, which usually give me ideas for a drawing and motivate the painting process,” he explained. However, if you look closely, there is one thing that plays a huge role in his artwork. Water. More precisely the human figure submerged in water. “Simply because it is a beautiful situation”.

Alison Nicholls’ sketches and watercolor paintings take after the African landscape – a landscape she has come to know quite intimately, having lived in Botswana and Zimbabwe for a number of years. Her work allows her to revisit these African planes and study them closer.

Her process includes visiting African conservation organizations, where she sketches on-site. This way, Nicholls also gets to learn about current conservation issues. Her resulting sketches and paintings are then used to raise awareness and funds for the organizations’ fieldwork. According to Nicholls, she donates a portion of her sales to these organizations.

Quite naturally, Nicholls finds the process of painting in an African conservation, an exhilarating one. While her studio paintings consist of multiple layers, her sketches require confidence and speed. “It can be a real challenge to depict complex issues like the human-wildlife conflict in a painting,” Nicholls explains on her website, “but it has given my art layers of meaning, as well as layers of color.”

“I usually work in pencil or pen first, then add watercolor,” she explains her process. “I don’t have an easel or a chair because I usually stand when sketching people, or need to be in a vehicle when sketching wildlife.”

She might just inspire you to get sketching!

There’s a richness to Valerie Patterson’s watercolor paintings – an overflowing of textures, patterns, and colors. Her canvases seem to be bursting at the seams. Sometimes, she results in painting over her finished works – a superimposition that’s well-intended, and which adds to the intensity of the overall composition.

According to Patterson, such details are meant to reflect the “psychological resonance” of her subjects, delving deeper into the human condition. “I believe that most of my ideas come through me, not from me,” she explained on her website. “Sometimes, ideas simply pop into my head seemingly from nowhere. Other times, some political or social situations will appear in my conversations, in the news, in a movie or in many other ways — repeatedly, beckoning me to paint them.”

Through her work, she aims to give voice to difficult social and political subjects in an attempt to encourage thought, emotion, and dialogue. “Once I realized the tremendous power that images can have to make people comfortable or uncomfortable, happy or sad, settled or unsettled, I knew I had a voice,” she writes.

“I decided to use my voice to encourage people to see, think and feel – something not always valued in our culture. Awareness replaces ignorance and opens up the possibility of change. If you can’t ignore it, then you may feel compelled to change it.” Her imagery is compelling, if nothing else.

Yevgenia Watts found her artistic voice in watercolors (“I speak watercolor,” reads her Instagram bio). Whether it’s her portraits or landscapes, Watts manages to capture the very essence of the subject at hand, with a few simple brushstrokes.

“I really like the way it behaves like a living thing,” she wrote on her website, explaining how the paint floats and blooms as if it has a mind of its own. “It constantly surprises me,” she admits. With each piece, Watts pushes her boundaries, exploring further the different ways in which watercolor behaves.

“Watercolor is different than any other art medium,” she explains. “It’s about letting go. It’s about trusting in yourself to go where the water takes you.” According to Watts, immersing yourself in the loose colors on the page feels like finding the holy grail.

Much like her artwork, Watts’ inspiration is rich and varied. “It could be a beautiful light and dark pattern that catches my eye, a strong color contrast that excites me, or a grey foggy landscape that reflects my mood,” she explains. “It could be an expression on a stranger’s face or inspiration from a dream.”

Whatever her recipe is, it seems to be working.

Tonight’s the night! 8pm on @skyartsartistoftheyear if you’ve been watching you might recognise my portrait from the main screen when it cuts to ads. I’ve not seen the episode yet and it’s been a while since we filmed it so it’s reignited the excitement I had taking part. I learnt a lot about myself and how much faith I’ve put in my work, my trust in believing my dreams. I’m a positive person, I go with my instincts a lot in life, I’m hopeful and an optimist. Some might say a lot of that was stripped away when mum left us, we filmed tonight’s heat the day before I found out we had days left, and she died just 8 short days later. The last proper conversation I had with her was about what I was doing, I couldn’t grasp how much she took in because it was hard for her to express many things in those last weeks and true real moments were blips. She did say she was proud, and I caught a photo of her with that proud smile on her face. It’s easy to lose the things you want when your world comes crashing down, it’s easy to lose your way, it’s easy to buckle and fall but it’s also ok. I’ve lost my way a million times, I’ve woken to find myself crying in my sleep and haven’t realised. I’ve sobbed myself to sleep and been in immense physical pain because that’s what grief is. You miss the one you love with all that they took with them and a part of that is some of yourself. They should be here with you sharing incredible life achievements, like courage, entering this competition was a big leap of faith, and courage. My point is there are new moments of courage and today mine is getting through the day, knowing you’re going to be sitting right next to me tonight proudly watching with me. I love you so much 💙✨ #livingwithgrief #grief #skyarts #skyartsportraitartistoftheyear

Her minimalistic style invites the viewer to engage with her artworks, filling in the absences rather than just dismissing the work and moving on. It’s this distinctive style that has brought her an abundance of commercial clients and individuals. Meanwhile, her more personal work can be found on her Instagram page as well as showcased at galleries and art events across London.

Based in London, Hussain’s artistic passion sparked early on, and she recalls spending hours sketching on the counter in her dad’s corner shop. But according to her biography, it was only since the birth of her first child that she decided to take her hobby more seriously. And so, she picked up the pencil once again, reclaiming her own identity amid the emotional blurrings of motherhood.

Her sources of inspiration vary and include anything from the patterns of home interiors to the natural shapes of the outdoors and the geometries of architecture. Working in several different media, and most usually at night, she is driven by experimentation, constantly exploring new techniques and searching for the shapes and subjects they express best.

Take a look at some of her experimentations with the color blue.

You may have seen Marija Tiurina’s previous artworks such as reimagining fruits and vegetables as adorable characters and other vibrant watercolor paintings.

This time, the London-based artist created cute characters inspired by different types of coffee. “Every day is a coffee day for me, really (my intake has been dangerously high). The characters were a lot of fun to make. I could, of course, continue illustrating all types of hot beverages forever, but a line had to be drawn somewhere (for now),” she told Bored Panda.

Check out her creations below – and make sure you use the arrows to see all the cartoons.

Emily Hare is a full-time artist from England who grew up on illustrated fairy tales and classic fantasy movies such as Labyrinth, Legend, Sinbad The Sailor, Jason and the Argonauts and many more.

In our digital world today, Hare opted a more traditional way for her artworks – paintbrush and watercolor. She prefers myths and legends, creating unusual creatures and magical beings that are delicately drawn in soft-hued colors. She’s currently in process of launching her second book, Cauldron.

If you’re a fan of subtle and soft-looking paintings, Hare’s works will definitely delight your artistic imagination.
