]]>Sculptor Marco Martlar visited the most affected areas once the government cleaned the destroyed trees and discovered that a lot of wood was still lying there, including roots, branches, and other wooden debris. So he started collecting some and realized he could salvage it using the fallen wood to make sculptures.
“I like to think -that everything can take on new life and be always in transformation,” Martalar explained in a recent interview with I’Altopiano. “The destruction brought by Vaia was a blow to the heart, but then it made me want to get something good out of this disastrous event or find something beautiful in it somehow.”
Martlar first intended to make a sculpture of a cat, but the abundance of material prompted him to transition to a large-scale project. This resulted in an impressive sculpture of a lion standing at the top of the hill.
After receiving overwhelmingly positive reactions, Martlar created other grandiose works from the same material, including a dragon and a rooster, and intends to use waste wood in the future exclusively. Check out more of his works below.

]]>This Japanese sculptor creates adorable dog sculptures from wood, accurately replicating various dog breeds, including fluffy poodles, and plush pugs. Sano’s works also include the traits these dogs are famous for, like panting tongues and expressions of playfulness, joy, or curiosity.
Sano is inspired by man’s best friend even when she engages in other art disciplines besides sculpting. During winter, she turns to embroidery and continues to feature dogs as the main subjects of her artworks.
“I have used dogs in my work to express the various facets of femininity (some of them are based on female statues I personally admire).” – Sano explains on her website. “Dogs are always loyal to their masters. I make my work with the hope touchstart they will also nuzzle up to their audience.”
In a recent interview, Sano added that the dog sculptures and other art she makes are actually self-portraits to some extent. She told Colossal that her works are about “myself looking at myself” and that the form of dogs is an effective method to “materialize what I think of my inner self.”
Sano’s dog sculptures are no stranger to going on tours and being featured in exhibitions all over the world. If you can’t wait for them to get to your city, check out more photos below.

]]>Nick Zammeti is a creative woodworker who built a giant colored pencil using a lot of regular-size colored pencils. This meta idea came to him when he was thinking about how often he uses pencils, so this was a sort of a homage to the tool he uses a lot.
“I’ve done quite a few pencil projects …bowls and vases and pots and bits and pieces,” Nick says. “Looking at these pencils and thinking to myself what can I make? I have these pencils. What about a huge pencil?”
Check out the video of him making it below, as well as some of his other pencil creations on Instagram.

]]>Bernier collects driftwood near her home in Victoria and then studies the shape and form of each piece in order to determine in which direction she wants to go.
“When I work with driftwood, I never start with a blank canvas. Each piece of driftwood is already a sculpture, created by the caresses of the waves and wind,” Bernier says about her creative process.
This talented artist uses other natural materials to complement her sculptures and achieve her vision including clay, stones, and shells.
“The wood tells a story and I try to think of its journey as I hold it in my hand. I extend or shorten the curves and contours that already exist into familiar shapes of animals or peoples’ faces.” – she adds.

His latest project was a replica of the former professional bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger. Since the action star was also known as the Austrian Oak, he was carved from an actual oak tree. The statue measures 1.88 meters and was completed after 6 months of work. He posted the entire process on his Instagram page.
