A severe Vaia storm hit the region of northern Italy in 2018, and the consequences on nature in the area were devastating. Once-magnificent forests were destroyed while numerous trees got ripped out of the ground and scattered all over the place. Fortunately, the fallen wood now has a new life, thanks to one crafty Italian artist.

Sculptor Marco Martlar visited the most affected areas once the government cleaned the destroyed trees and discovered that a lot of wood was still lying there, including roots, branches, and other wooden debris. So he started collecting some and realized he could salvage it using the fallen wood to make sculptures.

“I like to think -that everything can take on new life and be always in transformation,” Martalar explained in a recent interview with I’Altopiano. “The destruction brought by Vaia was a blow to the heart, but then it made me want to get something good out of this disastrous event or find something beautiful in it somehow.”

Martlar first intended to make a sculpture of a cat, but the abundance of material prompted him to transition to a large-scale project. This resulted in an impressive sculpture of a lion standing at the top of the hill.

After receiving overwhelmingly positive reactions, Martlar created other grandiose works from the same material, including a dragon and a rooster, and intends to use waste wood in the future exclusively. Check out more of his works below.

We can all agree that any artwork featuring dogs is probably amazing. But this isn’t the only thing that makes the works of Misato Sano impressive.

This Japanese sculptor creates adorable dog sculptures from wood, accurately replicating various dog breeds, including fluffy poodles, and plush pugs. Sano’s works also include the traits these dogs are famous for, like panting tongues and expressions of playfulness, joy, or curiosity.

Sano is inspired by man’s best friend even when she engages in other art disciplines besides sculpting. During winter, she turns to embroidery and continues to feature dogs as the main subjects of her artworks.

“I have used dogs in my work to express the various facets of femininity (some of them are based on female statues I personally admire).” – Sano explains on her website. “Dogs are always loyal to their masters. I make my work with the hope touchstart they will also nuzzle up to their audience.”

In a recent interview, Sano added that the dog sculptures and other art she makes are actually self-portraits to some extent. She told Colossal that her works are about “myself looking at myself” and that the form of dogs is an effective method to “materialize what I think of my inner self.”

Sano’s dog sculptures are no stranger to going on tours and being featured in exhibitions all over the world. If you can’t wait for them to get to your city, check out more photos below.

“I’ve done quite a few pencil projects …bowls and vases and pots and bits and pieces,” Nick says. “Looking at these pencils and thinking to myself what can I make? I have these pencils. What about a huge pencil?”

Debra Bernier is a Canadian artist who uses driftwood to create some of the most unique and intriguing sculptures you’ll see out there. Her works are inspired by nature and look like fantasy creatures that you see in movies or cartoons.

Bernier collects driftwood near her home in Victoria and then studies the shape and form of each piece in order to determine in which direction she wants to go.

“When I work with driftwood, I never start with a blank canvas. Each piece of driftwood is already a sculpture, created by the caresses of the waves and wind,” Bernier says about her creative process.

This talented artist uses other natural materials to complement her sculptures and achieve her vision including clay, stones, and shells.

“The wood tells a story and I try to think of its journey as I hold it in my hand. I extend or shorten the curves and contours that already exist into familiar shapes of animals or peoples’ faces.” – she adds.

Check out some of these impressive works below.

Oakland-based artist Gabriel Schama is taking the art of wood carving to a whole other level. He uses a precise laser to carve mahogany plywood and then stack the pieces of laser-cut on top of each other to produce impressive and highly detailed wood sculptures. Using this technique, Schama can give his creations a distinct 3D effect and particular sense of depth to his creations.

What makes his work even more impressive is the fact that some of his art pieces have a shifting nature since you change the patterns and the look of the sculpture with the help of movable parts.

British sculptor Tach Pollard has been collecting oak tree roots ever since he was a kid, but it was only later in life that he realized these roots could also be a useful material for wood sculptures.  He began harvesting oak tree roots from a forest near his house and carving them into surreal creatures that are inspired by European myths and folklore. He also uses hawthorn, yew, and blackthorn tree roots for his creations.

“I love the sense of finding a new piece of wood and anticipating the potential of the form it holds inside,” said Pollard about his work. “Carving is a way of honoring this tree especially the roots I carve often I can see its suggested form as I pull it from the ground.”

James O’Neal is an artist who specializes in wood sculptures. He is known for carving trees and turning them into statues. He started his sculpting career after moving to Stow Creek Township. He does not have any formal training in wood sculpting and has had to learn the techniques as he goes for the past 10 years.

He creates life-size wooden figures, mainly human and animal, with a certain degree of a stylistic element to enhance the look of the wood. His previous works also include famous athletes such as Floyd Mayweather, Muhammad Ali, Connor McGregor, and Cris Cyborg.

His latest project was a replica of the former professional bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger. Since the action star was also known as the Austrian Oak, he was carved from an actual oak tree. The statue measures 1.88 meters and was completed after 6 months of work. He posted the entire process on his Instagram page.

If you are still into all stuff pixelated, then you’ll appreciate the works of Hsu Tung Han. This Taiwanese artist creates interesting wooden sculptures that represent the clash between analog and digital. The thing that makes his creations so unique is the fact that sculptures can be viewed as caught in the middle of dissolving into pixels or puzzles being put together.

The process of making these pixelated sculptures includes making drawings and clay models, before carving out the final piece from a variety of wood including walnut, teak, or African wax wood. You can check out some of Han’s impressive works below.
