]]>In his artist beginnings, Berger, who is a carpenter by training, experimented with spray can portraits and wood sculptures. But it wasn’t until he started brainstorming what to do with an old car windshield that he discovered the style of art that would go on to define his career.
After a successful first attempt at using glass as a canvas, Berger continued honing his skills and soon perfected the technique of incising images on a glass surface with a hammer. This process of creation through distraction has captivated art enthusiasts from all over the world and made Berger a well-known name in the art world.
While Berger is known to depict various subjects in his works, including cars and animals, human faces remain his biggest source of inspiration.
“Human faces have always fascinated me,” Berger shares on his website. “On safety glass, they come into their own and magically attract the viewer. It is a process of discovery from abstract fogging to figurative perception.”

He’s not always sure how the painting will come up until he finishes it: “I’ll have a vague idea of color and a small piece of a figure I can’t quite make out stuck in my head, and I’ll have to make it,” he says.
There’s something about certain artists that gives them the confidence to just barrel into a production and not necessarily knowing what’s going to happen, and yet having the confidence that it’s going to turn out well.
Such is certainly the case with Willcox and his work. Sometimes, the inspiration comes to him in dreams or during meditation sessions.

]]>According to Sotheby’s, Klimt, who is known for his works “The Kiss” and “Judith and the Head of Holofernes,” started working on “Lady with a Fan” in 1917. It was completed in 1918, shortly before his unexpected death in 1918.
“Lady with a Fan” is different from most of Klimt’s works because it was likely a product of the artist’s inspiration. At the time, Klimt was one of the most-respected portraitists, and most of his portraits were commissioned. This one, depicting an unknown woman across a yellow background filled with motifs inspired by East Asian art, is believed to be entirely made “in the pursuit of his own interests.”
“Dame mit Fächer (Lady with a Fan) is the last portrait Gustav Klimt created before his untimely death, when still in his artistic prime and producing some of his most accomplished and experimental works,” says Sotheby’s in the listing. “Many of those works, certainly the portraits for which he is best known, were commissions. This, though, is something completely different – a technical tour de force, full of boundary-pushing experimentation, as well as a heartfelt ode to absolute beauty.”
“Lady with a Fan” was acquired by Austrian industrialist Erwin Böhler shortly after Klimt’s death. It remained in his family until 1967 when it was purchased by Rudolf Leopold, famous art collector and founder of Vienna’s Leopold Museum. The painting was eventually sold to the current owner back in 1994.
