]]>A former shelter cat, Nala’s rise to fame is quite remarkable: “The story of one kitten, Nala, starts off at a home where the owners could no longer take care of the cats and kittens because there were too many,” explained her owner Varisiri (Pookie) Methachittiphan on Nala’s personal website.
“Nala was then taken away to the shelter where she was separated from her original family. Sadly we don’t know what happened to the rest of the cats or kittens, but when adopted, Nala was the only one left.”
According to her cat mum, it was love at first sight… or rather, at first lick. “She licked my face and knew she was the one that we were going to take home”, writes Methachittiphan.
“I went to my friend’s cousin’s house and we just wanted to go see some animals at the animal shelter and so I just went there without thinking that I was going to adopt a cat that day. Then, I saw her and I just couldn’t leave her, I had to take her home. She was around five months old at the time.”
These days, amongst her accolades, Nala has won Tik Toker of the Year at the 11th annual Shorty Awards, which also saw her be interviewed by Oprah Winfrey herself. Quite a change from her humble beginnings.
Her fame also came by surprise to her owner. “At the time Instagram had just started, so my sister said that I should start an account for Nala so that I could share her photo with everyone because she looks so cute with her big blue eyes,” she recalled. “I just started Instagram without actually thinking that she was going to be so famous.”
While she hoped to reach some 500 followers, people certainly took notice of her unique features. You’d want to join the hype!

]]>Meanwhile, Malaysian self-taught illustrator Lim Heng Swee adores cats and describes them as mysterious animals with great personalities. So he made a series of landscapes where cats play the main role.
“I always feel soothed when observing their postures, and I found that the curves of cats can perfectly blend into natural landscape scenes,” the artist shared on Bored Panda and hopes that people will enjoy his colorful artwork “with a touch of a sense of humor”.
The illustrations he created will play with your brain and you will have to look twice to find the cat in the picture. They’re pretty much an optical illusion!

]]>Pinocchio is an exceptional kitten who, despite his difficult beginnings, remained cheerful and full of energy. He was a skinny cat with an uncoordinated jaw, full of parasites, and when the rescuers took him in, the white furball struggled with a mild upper respiratory tract infection and had a severe umbilical hernia that needed to be removed.
The problems did not end there. As he grew the cat’s sternum did not develop properly, which made his breathing even harder.
According to Jacqueline DeAmor, the founder of the Friends for Life Rescue Network, Pinocchio has easily won the hearts of his veterinarians.
“He completely won over the entire staff team who took care of him,” DeAmor told Love Meow and added that he purred so loud they couldn’t hear his heartbeat.
He is currently in a foster home where he patiently waits for somebody to love him forever. Check out Pinocchio’s angelic face in the gallery below.

]]>“Gringo is a happy kitty, full of life and with a really nice personality,” Sabrine shared in an interview with Just Something. “He loves to play all day and all night, get up to mischief like climbing on curtains, scratching the couch and jumping in the plants.”
But of course, it was his white mustache which first caught their attention. Nicknamed “Mustache Tornado,” his hyperactive personality means there’s never a shortage of chaos around the house. According to Sabrine, Gringo can stand on his back paws, just like a meerkat. “He can stay a couple of minutes in that position, and it’s hilarious,” she says.
He’s also a huge fan of anything food-related. “Gringo always sniffs our plates to see if there’s something good for him to eat, and he likes to steal our sponge from the kitchen just to chew it, so we have to hide it every time,” says his owner.

]]>“Honestly, we forget that he has blind eyes,” admitted his owners, Nathanial Green and Elliot Green, in an interview with Bored Panda. “When we first moved to our apartment, he definitely had trouble navigating, but he learns quickly and really knows how to own the space… All he really cares about is where the food is and how far away it is from his dads.”
Now, with more than 120k followers on Instagram Merlin is living it up. The Greens (both of whom are visual artists) manage his Instagram, where they share the ins and outs of his day to day.
But life wasn’t always easy for the adorable kitty. Placed for adoption at the Lynchburg Humane Society, his owners first fell in love with him after visiting a “Free Cat Friday” event. “The lady who had shown us around eventually noticed us indecisively meandering,” Elliot Green recalled. “She stopped to tell us that she had a favorite, but that he had some issues and was sick. She took us to the medical wing to show us this tiny kitten who was recovering from a head cold.”
“As a full-time student also working two jobs, I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to provide Merlin with the attention he needed,” he explained. But then he held him to his arms. “As soon as I got to hold him, I think it was pretty obvious that he was perfect,” he says.
Perfect indeed!

]]>Russian artist Svetlana Petrova lost her mother in 2008 and was left with Zarathustra. “I got horrible depression after her death and for two years I was unable to do something creative,” the artist told BBC. “By chance, a friend asked me ‘Why don’t you make an art project with your cat because he’s so funny’. I’ve had cats before and included them in my work, like playing in theatre shows and I’ve made costumes for them. But I thought, ‘What can I do with Zarathustra because my mother spoilt him and he’s so fat.’”
So she came up with an idea to use her feline as a Photoshop model; she added Zarathustra’s face into famous paintings. Petrova also launched a website and an Instagram account called Fat Cat Art where she attracted more than 130 thousand followers.

]]>For many years now, studies have proven the many therapeutic effects of owning a pet cat or dog and having one around you, especially during your later years in life. In fact, it’s not unusual for the elderly to pass away as soon as their longtime companions pass away as well.
From reducing depression, anxiety, as well as giving people something to look forward to on a daily basis, pets truly can be therapeutic.
That’s something that the Pendleton Correctional Facility in Indiana can also prove as well.
After a state law mandated bringing in shelter cats into the correctional facility back in 2015, both the prisoners of the facility and the cats that are adopted, which often have a history of abuse and maltreatment, are better off.
The adopted shelter cats become more social, as well as trusting, after being fed, cleaned, and groomed by the facility’s inmates. Meanwhile, the inmates also benefit by learning how to take responsibility for another living creature’s life, as well as being able to feel the unconditional love of a pet, which is something that some inmates have been deprived of all of their lives.
