Dennis Prescott understands the very essence of cooking. A celebrated Canadian chef and cookbook author, his practice is based on making people happy with food that inspires joy at the table. Prescott’s uplifting and joyful spirit towards food also comes across his popular Instagram page, which has so far accumulated some 600k followers (and counting!).

Naturally, it took Prescott time and work to achieve a level of freedom and joy in the kitchen. “Deliciousness requires risk,” he relayed once in an interview with Medium. “Taking risks guarantees failure while on the road to success,” he noted.

Prescott knows what he’s talking about. A once struggling musician living in Nashville, TN, he learned how to cook by working his way through several Jamie Oliver cookbooks. He soon realized that food, rather than music, was his actual passion and he threw himself into not just creating delicious recipes. Working alongside chefs in various restaurants, lead him to travel the world as a chef and ultimately become the master he is today.

“Mastery takes years,” stresses the chef. “The best chefs in the world are the best because they’ve put in years and years of work to get to a place where something comes naturally to them like second nature. And they still fail often, because they’re constantly pushing their own creativity in the kitchen.”

Alongside the actual cooking, Prescott’s success is also owed to his online presence. His Instagram account is full of photos of mouth-watering food and eclectic recipes that will inspire you, at the very least, to order some takeout. “When I started, I naively thought all I’d have to focus on was food,” he says. “Wrong. Should you aspire to the best chef you can be? Absolutely! That said, I spend much more time working on account receivables and in meetings than I do in the kitchen.”

His advice to other aspiring cooks? “There is no special pill or secret hack to success. Just put your head down, work hard and put in the time. In the end, the risk will pay off.”

There are foodie influencers, and then there’s Pinch of Yum. With a whopping one million followers on Instagram, this food blogger and social media sensation creates easy, quick recipes with mouth-watering photos.

Run out of Saint Paul, MN, by food guru Lindsay Ostrom, Pinch of Yum began as a side project. According to Ostrom, she was working as a fourth-grade teacher at the time, and updated her blog late at nights or over the weekend.

“When Bjork and I got married, bought a house, and got ‘real jobs’—cooking regularly started to become a normal part of my life,” she recalled in an interview with the Mediakix blog. “I loved having someone to cook for and always loved trying new recipes.”

Cooking for someone would soon become cooking for everyone, with her online following growing steadily over time. “It’s amazing to me that we can just be in our house in our pajamas and doing some random video posts that will be viewed by more than 50,000 people,” reflects Ostrom.

“If I were to go in front of 50,000 people in real life, it would feel so intimidating. But I can talk to that many people from my pajamas, on my couch, without showering, and not feel nervous about it at all,” she jokes.

According to Ostrom, her goal now is to get you excited about cooking, rather than treating it as another chore: “I want you to be so excited about these recipes that you eagerly await 5 pm when you can go home from work and start cooking,” she stresses. Sounds like a plan to us!

Jessica Merchant wants to be your resource for everyday recipes. Which is easier said than done. According to the self-taught cook, in order to share her recipes daily, she makes upwards of six recipes per day.

Her hard work seems to have paid off. With almost 380k followers on Instagram, Merchant has become the go-to source for easy, quick recipes and is also a best-selling cookbook author, with both Seriously Delish, and The Pretty Dish becoming instant bestsellers.

“One of my main points is to not be afraid to make things your own,” she told Bakepedia. As an example, she gives her crisps recipe: “I knew that my readers love crisps, and I started thinking about how I could make one that was just a bit different, but still easy and accessible.”

Her experimental approach means she’s admittedly a better cook than a baker, as she has an aversion to following instructions of any kind. “My desserts aren’t as precise as many [dessert recipes], and a lot of them allow you to swap things in and out,” she states, “it’s all about trial and error; that’s how I learned to bake. So don’t be afraid!”

Recent recipes include shrimp fajitas and a pumpkin dream cake, a perfect addition to your Thanksgiving menu. You can follow Merchant’s recipes on her blog How Sweet Eats, her books, or her Instagram page.

While traveling plunged to an all-time low, 2020 has seen a steady rise in baking. “This year hasn’t been easy, but I know that baking has brought a sliver of joy to many individuals and families,” baking guru Sally McKenney recently wrote on Instagram. “I’m truly honored that my recipes have been part of your lives this year.”

With some 600k fans on Instagram alone, McKenney has introduced plenty of people to the art – and science – of baking. The three time’s best-selling cookbook author and creator of Sally’s Baking Addiction blog, McKenney offers from-scratch recipes, kitchen tips, lessons on baking basics, step-by-step photos, and video tutorials – so you know you’re covered.

Having launched her website in 2011, what started out as a personal blog and an easy way to share baking recipes with friends and family would outgrow its humble beginnings. The self-taught baker would soon learn that her recipes had an audience, and after only a year and a half of running her blog, she quit her full-time job to make room for her growing business.

According to McKenney, her favorite flavor to bake with is actually pumpkin. “I eat it all year round,” she told Bakepedia, “but we are coming into the season where people look for it … pies, breads, all kinds of desserts with pumpkin! And apple pie is my very favorite dessert, so you can look forward to variations of that.”

Indeed, her most popular recipe this time of year is, unsurprisingly, The Great Pumpkin Pie Recipe. Scroll down to see more of her mouthwatering deserts.

With most of us restricted to our homes, many Americans have taken to home-cooking. But cooking isn’t only a chore, it’s a way of exploring different cultures and cuisines. Instagram foodie, Melina Kutelas, wants to introduce you to vegan food that’s both appetizing and healthy (not to say— ethical!).

“In late 2015, I created About That Food because I wanted to offer a platform to help people who wanted to go on this wonderful journey of becoming vegan,” she explained in an interview with le buzz. “A journey that can sometimes be very confusing and frustrating but essentially is a very exciting and beautiful thing.”

Based in Vienna, Austria, Kutelas focuses on natural and seasonal ingredients. “To me, the most important ingredients are fresh vegetables, whatever is in season right now,” she says. Recent posts include Christmas cookies, tomato salad, and miso soup.

About That Food is meant to be a place to motivate yourself,” says Kutelas, “get inspired, and informed. Veganism isn’t that hard—if I can do it, so can you.” Instead of running to the hills, why not try a vegan recipe first.

A recent favorite is Kutelas’ Cold Brew Sparkling Orange Ice Cream Cake. “Summer in Austria is at its peak, with sweltering heat and therefore everyone prefers their drinks with lots of ice and their meals either cold or frozen,” she explains. “So in collaboration with J. Hornig I came up with a delicious and refreshing recipe, an Cold Brew Sparkling Orange Ice Cream Cake! It contains J. Hornig‘s brand new Cold Brew Sparkling Orange and a delicious cashew and coconut cream on top of a layer made of oats, hazelnuts and dates. You don’t bake the cake, you just freeze it, so it’s pretty easy to make!”
