The last decade has seen nail art take a huge leap forward, but Eichi Matsunaga takes it even further than that. “My philosophy is that detail is everything,” said the Japanese nail artist in an interview with Dazed Magazine. “There is a direct connection between my work and other cultural Japanese traditions in Japan, and the overarching theme is the careful attention to each stage of a process.”

Originally from Tokyo and currently based in New York, Matsunaga admits it was his sister who inspired him to treat nail painting as an art form. “She was working at a nail salon when I graduated from high school and I used to help her prepare nail art samples for the salon at her apartment,” he recalled. “Through this, I discovered that nails were my calling, and I enrolled in a nail art school soon after that.”

His designs aren’t contained to the nail surface alone. Rather, the whole hand serves as a canvas on which he incorporates custom made pieces, either translucent or made of metal. The finished result has a futuristic appeal to it, transforming his clients into fantastical beings, half robots, half human.

“My nails usually verge on the futuristic but I am still very interested in traditional methods and want to incorporate them,” says Matsunaga. In the meantime, his original designs can be seen sported on celebrities like Nicki Minaj, Mandy Moore, Lorde, and Mindy Kaling. You’ll want to take note.

Leanne Woodley describes herself as an “editorial manicurist,” but she might as well say she’s an artist. With her nail designs described by British style magazine Dazed and Confused Magazine as miniature works of art, Woodley admits she’s warmed up to the idea that her work is more than a simple manicure.

“I’ve really only just come to terms with the idea that I am an artist,” she told Dazed and Confused. “Growing up, I would draw a lot but didn’t consider myself an artist. Now that I have come to terms with it, each step of the process feels very emotional.”

As a child, she remembers being drawn to the concept of getting your nails done. “My dad took me to get my first manicure when I was seven years old,” she recalled. “I was really obsessed with nail polish and long nails after that, even though I was a nail biter.”

Her obsession turned into a career choice after meeting nail guru Bernadette Thompson. “After badgering her on set for hours, I went home to research her,” she says. “It hadn’t dawned on me how much influence she had in the things I loved growing up, not to mention how much money I could actually make doing nails.”

Fast forward to 2013, and she was working as a stylist assistant when she met Bernadette Thompson. “After badgering her on set for hours, I went home to research her,” she says. “It hadn’t dawned on me how much influence she had in the things I loved growing up, not to mention how much money I could actually make doing nails.” According to Woodley, “it was a wrap after that.”

Marine de Quénetain’s illustrations distill the very essence of fashion. Covering a wide range of styles and disciplines, from illustration to pattern design, and posters to book covers, her subjects tend to center around the beauty and fashion industry.

After graduating from ESAG Penninghen, Académie Julian in Paris in 2009 with a master’s degree in Art Direction and Graphic Design, de Quénetain has co-founded a graphic design studio, attracting brands and designers alike. Her collaborations include brands as big and as influential as Chanel, Hermes, Goop, Louboutin, and Estée Lauder.

Born and raised in Paris, de Quénetain was very much inspired by her mother, a fashion designer herself. “I always saw her drawing fashion figures in her studio, listening to music,” she told Global Blue. “I thought it was a very cool way to work and I planned to do the same at a very young age.”

Nowadays, she finds inspiration elsewhere, while traveling around the globe and visiting fashion capitals like London, Paris, New York, Helsinki, and Copenhagen. Take a look at some of her careful observations.

When it comes to makeup, Marie Bruce is a sort of magician. With looks that vary from the day-to-day to the ultimate bizarre, she transforms her clients using brushes and paints. Though her work is predominantly within the fashion industry, there’s also a crossover into celebrity and music. “Each day is genuinely different,” she told Lecture in Progress.

“The industry is really fast-paced and the pool of talent is huge, so you have to keep up,” she says. “It’s important to develop a style – a brand even – but at the same time you need to be versatile and ensure you’re not alienating certain audiences.” But with clients that include Kenzo, House of Holland, Browns Fashion and Opening Ceremony, Bruce seems to be keeping up.

Still, it wasn’t always that Bruce took an interest in the fashion industry. In fact, as a child, she was sort of a tomboy. “Growing up I used to flip between being an actress, then a lawyer, and by the time I left school I wanted to be a session drummer and take after my dad,” she relayed. “I never liked fashion though, I was a total tomboy, always in sports clothes and I hated make-up.”

It was only when she started working at a piercing studio that she became aware that makeup was a thing. After an uninspiring data analyst role, she finally decided to pursue her makeup interest and enrolled at the London College of Fashion at the age of 23. “During my second year I stopped attending so I could concentrate on networking and shooting to build up a portfolio,” she says. That portfolio was the start of a very successful career. See for yourself.

Looking to elevate your makeup looks? Eszter Domonkos, a Hungarian makeup artist, creates playful looks, that draw attention to your eyes.

“I’ve always had an obsession with eyes, I just think they are beautiful,”
Domonkos said in an interview with Office. “Since I was really young I always used to draw eyes all over my exercise books in school during my classes. Another reason is that my makeup looks are really ‘messy’ and all over the place so I want there still to be some kind of order. I think I’ve posted 2 or 3 full face looks, and it’s definitely something I want to experiment with more in the future.”

Her experimentation with makeup is still relatively new, making for a “messy” but unique effect. “I wasn’t interested in beauty and makeup before I started a makeup course in 2017,” she admitted. “In early 2017 I saw that there was a fashion makeup course (at KREA Contemporary Art School) in my town, I checked out their portfolio and I loved their approach to makeup. I didn’t even have a brush before that, but they made me so obsessed with makeup and experimenting in just a couple of weeks that I realized that this is what I wanted to do.”

Be sure to follow her Instagram account; we predict it’s only a matter of moments till her makeup career skyrockets.

In the land of endless makeup tutorials its easy to get lost in it all. But if you’re looking for your one, steady, makeup guru we recommend you go with Lottie.

Shying away from the makeup community drama, Lottie has made quite a (first) name for herself, working with huge celebrities like Drew Barrymore, Rihanna, Paris Jackson, Emilia Clarke, and Solange Knowles, among many (many) others.

The self-taught talent was raised in Southern California and knew early on that she had a thing for art. Upon completing her education in graphic design, she moved to London, England. But a few years later, she moved into what she considers her true calling, now working in LA and NY.

“My path was not a straight and easy one, I started wanting to be a graphic designer and in a roundabout way through an internship at a magazine for design I discovered that being a makeup artist was a real job outside of retail,” she said in an interview with the Reed Clarke blog. “From that point, I knew design was not my goal anymore and I did what I could to become a makeup artist. I practiced on every single person I knew, including myself and my husband and then starting testing and building a book.”

She now rocks the biggest fashion shows in New York, Milan, London, Miami, and Los Angeles. Take a look at some of her makeup looks in the gallery below.

Josephine Lee’s playful take on fashion is a breath of fresh air. The Korean-American model and visual artist, known online as Princess Gollum, transforms herself completely through her elaborate costumes and makeup art.

Inspired by the noughties, goth aesthetic, and anything weird, her moniker suits her perfectly. “Gollum represents the internal conflicts of any mortal; two polar opposite personalities, contradicting yet coexisting,” she explained in an interview with Something Curated. “I chose Gollum because I wanted to highlight what I identified with so heavily as a child, as well as crowning his name with princess to add a twinkle.”

Her Instagram presence has caught the attention of tens of thousands of followers, as well as brands like Opening Ceremony, Milk Makeup, Obey, and Drink This Milk.

“I think pushing the boundaries of society’s beauty standard is very important,” she explained. “I think being able to express myself in this medium, being a foot smaller than the average model’s height and not having professional modeling background, is what thrills me the most. I’m happy to see more and more media representation of people who, like me, have found their light.”

Take a look at some of her wonderful transformations in the gallery below.

Paris-born, Brooklyn-based makeup queen, known simply as Violette, has dominated the fashion scene for quite a while now. When you’re known by first name only, that’s a clear sign you’ve made a name for yourself.

A global beauty director for Estée Lauder since 2017, the self-taught makeup artist came to New-York at the age of 19 with big dreams in her heart and little money in her pocket. She studied art and fashion before launching her YouTube channel, where she shared her love for makeup.

“I always hesitated between becoming a painter or a fashion designer, but neither excited me enough,” Violette said in an interview with Inside Out magazine. “And then all became so evident when one night, completely by accident, I had to do a friend’s make up for a costume party. I put sparkles all over her face and it came to me: she was my muse. I was ‘dressing’ and painting her face.”

She currently reaches out to her big audience through her YouTube channel, as well as her Instagram page, where she inspires women and in turn is inspired by women. “Today, all women are my muses, not some sort of blank canvas,” she stressed. “I am celebrating all women and their femininity.”

Take a look at some of her makeup looks.

British make-up artist Isamya Ffrench takes make-up art to the next level. With an undeniable talent for blending and brushing, Ffrench quickly rose to fame and by the age of 28, has worked with some of the biggest fashion icons, including Kate Moss, Rihanna and Mert, and Marcus.

But like any good artist, Ffrench isn’t solely interested in making people pretty, stating in an interview with Forbes: “I’m just not solely interested in exploring what we are commercially fed as ‘beautiful’. I have my own instincts about beauty and what moves me and that’s what I pursue.”

M.A.C Cosmetics, Junya Watanabe, and Chloé are just some of the brands to have tapped her talents, along with YSL, for whom she’s now Beauté UK make-up ambassador.

“There was never a doubt that I wouldn’t end up in the creative industries,” she told Forbes. “Initially, I explored a few routes—dancing, product design, acting and then finally makeup and I feel like my work reflects all of those elements in a way… which feels creatively satisfying.”

Take a look at some of her creatively satisfying work in the gallery below.
