They both started out on the British stage before getting roles in TV and film. The world will always remember Stewart as Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. McKellen, on the other hand, will remain remembered for his roles in X Men and Lord of the Rings.
The two of them met in the 1970s in the Royal Shakespeare Company. At the time, Steward found McKellen intimidating, as the latter was already an established actor. They bonded while filming X Men.
