]]>Based in Amsterdam, the two first met at the Royal Academy of Arts, where they first joined hands (and hearts). Since graduating in 2012, the duo has worked alongside a talented team of designers and crafters to produce stunning creative content, collaborating with a wide range of brands and agencies. Their selected clientele includes publications and brands as big as ELLE, Vogue, Clinique, and Adobe.
“We studied together, and helped each other with our art projects,” they recalled in an interview with Medium. “Our working together during the study blossomed into a relationship, which grew into a working collaboration. So actually, in a way, we have been working together since we met.”
Besides their love for crafting paper the couple also sporadically works with a wide range of other materials including styrofoam, plexiglass, miniatures, and wood. But no matter the material, the end result is always something unique and well made. “Every project has its own challenges,” say Adrian & Gidi. “When we are working with unfamiliar materials, and tight deadlines it can be challenging to get good results in limited time. But till now, we have seemed to manage.”
And when it comes to inspiration, they seem to come by plenty of it in their day-to-day. “We love going to the paper shop, the shear amount of colors and textures are a big inspiration,” they note
“Design wise we get a lot of inspiration from our daily lives. For instance, when working on miniature architecture we get a lot of inspiration from the old buildings here in Amsterdam. You notice all the little details, and everything around you turns into miniature sets in your head.”

One of her top recommendations is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. “I think everyone should experience the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness at least once in their lifetime,” she stressed, “and if you can, do it with an outfitter. Whether it’s the pristine waters or secluded wilderness, the call of loons, eagles soaring above, the milkiest of milky ways or the fantastic fishing—there are so many reasons Nick and I go back several times every year.”

]]>“Learning authentic Venetian cookery is more about finding the best regional ingredients than knowing how to fry a fish,” remarked The New York Times in an article dedicated to Rocca. Having Italian food in her blood and a contagious zest for life, Rocca’s teachings are thorough, without being overly serious.
Having graduated from the Hotel School of Lausanne, Rocca brought up her two daughters and ran two Italian restaurants in Cape Town for 11 years, before making a move to London in 2002. In London, she opened her first Italian cookery school, which her two daughters have run since 2014. As for Rocca, she is now back in Venice, where she runs a second branch of the cookery school.
Her classes—full of zest and enthusiasm—begin with shopping tips at Venice’s Rialto fish and produce market and end with a jolly cooking tutorial in Rocca’s home.
“A cuisine is built around the local ingredients so exporting a culinary culture is really difficult,” explained the chef in an interview with Suitcase Magazine. “You can’t access the same ingredients, not everything can be exported and compromises are not always successful.”
“I never eat in Italian restaurants outside of Italy as I enjoy discovering the local specialties,” she admits. “I also know how difficult it is to replicate any cuisine outside of its original country.” Her dishes always comprise just two or three ingredients, chosen well, cooked simply and brought to the table with gusto.
We dream of taking her cookery classes in Venice’s Dorsoduro district, just across the Grand Canal from San Marco. But for the time being, we’ll have to make do with her online courses.

]]>According to Tordini, her passion for Art Deco jewelry sparked at a young age, when taking careful notice of her grandmother’s stacked, statement rings. Indeed, the Leda Madera pieces have an Art Deco look that will add an artistic flair to any outfit. Carefully cast in Italy, the graphic pieces have a vintage twist to them, crafted with the label’s signature pleated detail that’s meant to give the look of movement.
“The ‘pleated element’ movement is at the core of my designs,” explained Tordini in an interview with Moda Operandi. “You will find it in all three families within the collection.”
But while her main inspiration comes from her grandmother, Tordini’s fashion sensibilities are tied to other family members. According to the young designer, her father has a showroom in Italy and the whole family has grown up breathing fashion. She herself graduated in Fashion Communication at IED and worked in the Communication Department of the family business. Tordini has also worked as Art Director for a few emerging brands and boutiques.
Aside from her family, other sources of inspiration include cinema and other forms of visual art: “My collection references Art Deco architecture from Paris and New York, and the whole Italian end-of-the-’80’s, beginning-of-the-’90s contained opulence,” she notes. “At the time, Art Deco was a symbol of modernity and luxury, and my brand has the same characteristics: eternal, it starts from the past and looks to the future, and can be passed on from one generation to another.”

“I always had an affinity to art and design of all kinds, but clothing design really kicked off when I was in university,” shared the young talent in an interview with The Folklore. “Having a formal education and vocational skills were very important, so the challenge was balancing both without losing on either.”
According to Iyamah, her brand was fuelled by her passion for creativity with the goal to celebrate her African roots and cultures beyond. Iyamah stresses that she was determined to build an African-owned brand that was rich and bold in style and most importantly internationally accessible.
“My Nigerian roots are quite a part and parcel of me that it comes quite natural to include some elements that portray the culture,” says Iyamah. “Nigerians are energetic, vibrant and confident which are elements that are evident in A.I. designs. Also having our flagship A.I. studio, and operating out of there, keeps the inspiration fresh and relevant.”

]]>A former shelter cat, Nala’s rise to fame is quite remarkable: “The story of one kitten, Nala, starts off at a home where the owners could no longer take care of the cats and kittens because there were too many,” explained her owner Varisiri (Pookie) Methachittiphan on Nala’s personal website.
“Nala was then taken away to the shelter where she was separated from her original family. Sadly we don’t know what happened to the rest of the cats or kittens, but when adopted, Nala was the only one left.”
According to her cat mum, it was love at first sight… or rather, at first lick. “She licked my face and knew she was the one that we were going to take home”, writes Methachittiphan.
“I went to my friend’s cousin’s house and we just wanted to go see some animals at the animal shelter and so I just went there without thinking that I was going to adopt a cat that day. Then, I saw her and I just couldn’t leave her, I had to take her home. She was around five months old at the time.”
These days, amongst her accolades, Nala has won Tik Toker of the Year at the 11th annual Shorty Awards, which also saw her be interviewed by Oprah Winfrey herself. Quite a change from her humble beginnings.
Her fame also came by surprise to her owner. “At the time Instagram had just started, so my sister said that I should start an account for Nala so that I could share her photo with everyone because she looks so cute with her big blue eyes,” she recalled. “I just started Instagram without actually thinking that she was going to be so famous.”
While she hoped to reach some 500 followers, people certainly took notice of her unique features. You’d want to join the hype!

While some people take to baking immediately, says Gill, others decide on a different, more technical approach: “The internet is full of resources to the point where you can troubleshoot any issue you may have,” shared the pastry chef in an interview with Whistles. “It’s obvious to say but practicing technique and always tasting your food will get you there.”
According to Gill, if you want to take the plunge and become a chef, spend a week or two in a kitchen you admire to get a feel for it. If nothing, her latest book, The Pastry Chef’s Guide: The secret to successful baking every time, might just convince you. The book includes the core principles of patisserie—anything from ingredients to lining your tins.
“It’s written in a way that will help you to understand the principles that underpin pastry and show you that… it’s just not that hard,” explained Gill in one Instagram post. “In it, you’ll find lots of base recipes for you to use as staples and theory on how to elevate them and make them your own.”

Born in Australia to a Chinese family, and currently based in Brooklyn, New York City, McKinnon describes her book as “a deeply personal and emotional deep dive into food as a gateway to discovering cultural identity.”
“This is my love letter to all the Asian food that I crave everyday,” wrote McKinnon on a post on Instagram. “Some of the recipes are inspired by the Chinese food I ate growing up, but mostly it is a modern interpretation of my fave Asian flavors.”
Recipes range from the traditional—salt and pepper eggplant, red curry laksa, pea, and ginger fried rice—to uniquely modern interpretations, such as buttery miso vegemite noodles, stir-fried salt, and vinegar potatoes, cacio e pepe udon noodles, and grilled wombok caesar salad with wonton crackers.

]]>Run out of Saint Paul, MN, by food guru Lindsay Ostrom, Pinch of Yum began as a side project. According to Ostrom, she was working as a fourth-grade teacher at the time, and updated her blog late at nights or over the weekend.
“When Bjork and I got married, bought a house, and got ‘real jobs’—cooking regularly started to become a normal part of my life,” she recalled in an interview with the Mediakix blog. “I loved having someone to cook for and always loved trying new recipes.”
Cooking for someone would soon become cooking for everyone, with her online following growing steadily over time. “It’s amazing to me that we can just be in our house in our pajamas and doing some random video posts that will be viewed by more than 50,000 people,” reflects Ostrom.
“If I were to go in front of 50,000 people in real life, it would feel so intimidating. But I can talk to that many people from my pajamas, on my couch, without showering, and not feel nervous about it at all,” she jokes.
According to Ostrom, her goal now is to get you excited about cooking, rather than treating it as another chore: “I want you to be so excited about these recipes that you eagerly await 5 pm when you can go home from work and start cooking,” she stresses. Sounds like a plan to us!

If nothing, her latest book, The Pastry Chef’s Guide: The secret to successful baking every time, might just convince you. The book includes the core principles of patisserie—anything from ingredients to lining your tins.
“It’s written in a way that will help you to understand the principles that underpin pastry and show you that… it’s just not that hard,” explained Gill in one Instagram post. “In it, you’ll find lots of base recipes for you to use as staples and theory on how to elevate them and make them your own.”

]]>This week we bring you Hetty Lui McKinnon’s cookbook To Asia, With Love, a great introduction to Asian cuisine. Born in Australia to a Chinese family, and currently based in Brooklyn, New York City, McKinnon describes her book as “a deeply personal and emotional deep dive into food as a gateway to discovering cultural identity.”
“This is my love letter to all the Asian food that I crave everyday,” wrote McKinnon on a post on Instagram. “Some of the recipes are inspired by the Chinese food I ate growing up, but mostly it is a modern interpretation of my fave Asian flavors.”
Recipes range from the traditional—salt and pepper eggplant, red curry laksa, pea, and ginger fried rice—to uniquely modern interpretations, such as buttery miso vegemite noodles, stir-fried salt, and vinegar potatoes, cacio e pepe udon noodles, and grilled wombok caesar salad with wonton crackers.
According to McKinnon, the Chinese recipes she shares in her book are all, in one way or another, inspired by her mother’s food. Just scrolling through her Instagram page will make your mouth water!

]]>Run out of Saint Paul, MN, by food guru Lindsay Ostrom, Pinch of Yum began as a side project. According to Ostrom, she was working as a fourth-grade teacher at the time, and updated her blog late at nights or over the weekend.
“When Bjork and I got married, bought a house, and got ‘real jobs’—cooking regularly started to become a normal part of my life,” she recalled in an interview with the Mediakix blog. “I loved having someone to cook for and always loved trying new recipes.”
Cooking for someone would soon become cooking for everyone, with her online following growing steadily over time. “It’s amazing to me that we can just be in our house in our pajamas and doing some random video posts that will be viewed by more than 50,000 people,” reflects Ostrom.
“If I were to go in front of 50,000 people in real life, it would feel so intimidating. But I can talk to that many people from my pajamas, on my couch, without showering, and not feel nervous about it at all,” she jokes.
According to Ostrom, her goal now is to get you excited about cooking, rather than treating it as another chore: “I want you to be so excited about these recipes that you eagerly await 5 pm when you can go home from work and start cooking,” she stresses. Sounds like a plan to us!
