It all started with simple handbag: a half-moon silhouette and bamboo slats. Known as the Ark bag, there was a time when you couldn’t scroll through Instagram without spotting it, with celebrities like Jessica Alba, Michelle Williams, and Chrissy Teigen all embracing it wholly. Considered a summer “it” bag, this simple accessory launched Cult Gaia, founded by designer Jasmin Larian. These days, the brand is much bigger than its handbags, sporting anything from quirky shoes to luxurious resort wear.

“The name Gaia comes from the goddess of Mother Earth and the daughter of chaos, the most creative force there is in my opinion,” relayed Larian in a piece published on Anupam Dabral’s website. “And every great brand is cult-like, uniting like-minded people in their aesthetic ideals. Women and nature are endlessly inspiring, so there is a lot in the name.”

But though wholly artistic, the brand also aims to be approachable and functional, creating items that are Objet d’Art whilst still having utility. “In the market, it was always hard for me to find artful pieces that felt special and wearable, with an affordable price point,” explained Larian. “I love the idea of keeping special pieces forever.”

True to her word, Larian’s accessories, and more specifically her bags, stand on their own and have a very sculptural quality about them without being overt. The brand’s design ethos is to make things stand out and turn heads. “Pieces should be perfectly imperfect and need to be nuanced to be beautiful, like nature, no two things are ever the same,” reads Cult Gaia’s website. Scroll down to see some pieces from their recent collection.

Drop-a-Pin is a brand from Tel Aviv, Israel run by a husband and wife who love architecture. They turn the world’s most famous buildings into miniature enamel pins that can be worn as fashion accessories. Most of the buildings they feature in their work are the ones they got to see and study in person while they were traveling around the world for five years.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BozRI-Mja08/

“We developed a simple method we learned at the university in a course called Basic Design,” they told This Is Colossal. “The first and only law is to maintain the minimum number of lines necessary so that the building can still be identified. Once the lines in the design could no longer be erased, we reached the destination.”

They’re currently raising funds for this project on Indiegogo, where you can preorder your favorite design and support them. Until now, they gathered more than 10 times the amount they wanted and the orders just keep coming. If you’re a fellow architecture lover or know one, you know where the next gift is coming from.

Shoe brand Nodaleto was making quite a splash at Paris FW19 fashion week, with its chunky 70s inspired boots, but the story behind the brand might be even more dramatic than the shoes themselves.

“Nodaleto is the result of what I am, the aesthetic I like, what I was dreaming of wearing as a shoe addict,” said co-founder Julia Toledano Toledano in an interview with Flaunt. “My family heritage inspired the brand itself in a global aspect. Andalusia inspired the color of the brand, Tangerine, which I used in patent leather in my collection… between red and orange, love and happiness. For the minimalism aspect of the shoes, I like quality fabrics and architectural lines.”

“I’ve wanted to start a shoe brand for a long time,” she recalled. “Actually, it was my childhood dream! During my childhood, I was designing for myself only and didn’t go to a fashion school.”

But it took her some time to realize her dream. After initially going to law school in Paris and receiving a master’s in fashion journalism, she realized her true passion was shoes. “So I start doing some research of what I wanted… the name, the aesthetic, the line, etc…” she said. “And then decided to go to London College of Fashion to take classes on technical shoe aspects. I went to Italy to visit factories, then came back to Paris and started one year ago– the beginning of everything.”

Fuelled by her love for multi-artistic mediums, Nodaleto emerges as a creative label that goes beyond shoes, a gentle exuberance inspired by the iconography and architecture of the 70s. Well worth following on Instagram, if nothing else:

Baylee Ann Zwart designs original jewelry that’s inspired by French Art Deco as well as Ancient civilizations, making wearable art pieces for the modern woman (but with a hint of tradition).

“I’m really passionate about creating fine jewelry options for modern women, that feel approachable for everyday wear, but special enough to invest in knowing they will have it for years to come,” she explained in an interview with Flaunt.

“I’ve always loved the Art Deco era of jewelry, it was so architectural and linear with the use of such unusual shapes of stones and diamonds, and I design in a very linear way, so I have loved creating a more modern take on Deco,” she added. “On the other hand I’ve also been fascinated by ancient civilizations for as long as I can remember, so being able to create ancient-looking coins, in solid gold was always an ambition of mine, and so was combing those two worlds, Ancient and Deco, and that’s really the voice and foundation of our collection.”

Her jewelry brand, AZLEE, is dedicated to creating long-lasting, quality pieces. Made of 18k gold and platinum, AZLEE’s pieces are made locally in Los Angeles by master craftsman. The enamel is hand-painted by a local artist and the jewelers are a top craftsman in their field.

Something to add to your collection, perhaps. Take a look at some highlights from AZLEE’s Instagram page:

The brand “Working Girls” started off as an art experiment. Created by artist and designer Shailah Maynard, it’s a line of pool floats in the shape of body parts. This experiment proved successful, culminating in a brand that now sells tongue-in-cheek accessories and clothing items that are inspired by ’80s and ’90s music, film, and pop-culture.

Because who wouldn’t want to rock an ironic T-Shirt or a pair of socks with the phrase “Big Business” printed in all caps? “Working Girls isn’t just one type of craft or product. The brand as a whole is a concept,” explained Maynard in an interview with the Urban Outfitters blog.

“The things that inspire me have always remained the same, but my style has definitely evolved over the years,” she added. “I’ve done anything from printmaking to quilting to weaving… There will always be an undertone of satire, and female-forward thinking, because that is who I am. My focus now is mainly design and installation, but I love teaching myself new skills, so who knows what the next thing will be.”
