Have you ever wondered what you get when you combine colorful birds and makeup? Probably not, but we will still tell you the funny secret: the answer is The Pansy Project—a makeup look inspired by drawn birds.

According to Paul Harfleet, the founder of the project, the idea to make a compilation of drawn feathered friends began in April 2020 when the lockdown was announced.

“As I sat in my apartment overlooking a clearer, quieter London skyline, I noticed the birds more than ever and my passion for ornithology re-emerged,” the artist shared on Bored Panda and added that he began drawing birds he could see from his window.

To promote his work on social media, he came up with a fantastic idea; he began dressing up like his feathered friends. “These humorous and light-hearted shoots used my own wardrobe and makeup skills and became an intrinsic component of a project that has become known as Birds Can Fly,” he added.

Victoria Velozo’s paintings are a combination of styles and techniques. A hybrid between realism and abstraction, they’re created using oil, watercolor, and acrylic (sometimes mixed together in the same painting). These sometimes jarring juxtapositions create tension within Velozo’s work that call for attention.

“My own personal style involves continuously creating tension in the artwork,” she stressed in a piece she wrote for Artsy Shark. “I achieve this through the combined use of premeditated realism and abstract improvisation. Realism is used as a measure of my ability and the abstract work displays my artistic expression.”

When it comes to her subjects, those tend to center around the natural world. In her most recent series, Velozo focuses on the birdlife inhabiting grasslands. Birds such as eagles, parrots, and crows are painted upon abstract backgrounds that hint at their environmental landscape.

According to Velozo, grasslands are among our most vulnerable and endangered habitats due to urbanization. She hopes, therefore, that her work might stimulate care and concern for our natural habitats. “I want to create a subconscious connection to the environment,” she writes. “I believe viewing a painting of nature evokes an intuitive reminder of the fragility and sacredness of the natural world.”

We certainly hope so.

Rose Tanner’s oil paintings can are homage to birds. With an estimated 10k species of birds around the world, she’s got her work cut out for her. “Birds sing, dance, fight, court, breed, and fly,” Tanner notes on her website. “They claim territory, pair for life, play the field and fool around. They hold funerals, have socials, eat fermented berries and perform mating rituals that leave us baffled. The subject matter is endless!”

Her paintings are based on careful studies, and Tanner often travels in order to find new subjects for her work. “My work is about those moments in nature that show the story, emotion or character of a bird,” she says. “Watching birds in the wild has taught me absolute respect for the diversity on this planet.”

Her paintings also allow her to give back to nature, and Tanner notes that she’s an active supporter of preserving endangered birds and their habitat. “My goal is for the viewer to connect with the playful, human side of birds,” she told Artsy Shark, “to see into their eyes and realize there is so much more than expected.”

Her artwork might just motivate you to spend more time outdoors. It also acts as a reminder to look upward every once in a while.

Nicola Henley’s art is a delightful homage to birds and their natural landscapes. “I am continually inspired by the natural world but in particular birds and their movement within the landscape and coastal regions,” she writes on her website. “I love studying how they move across the sky and interact with air currents and wave motion, or their distinctive characteristic movement as they feed along shorelines or flock to feeding grounds.”

“I hope my work helps to draw attention to the delicate balance of nature and the inter-dependence and connectivity between ourselves and our natural environment,” she says. “I hope that the sense of freedom I try to capture will resonate with everyone that sees it.”

But while birds are constant throughout her work, Henley’s toolbox is a mish-mash of sorts – with her artwork a mixture of weave, embroidery, and print. Using machine and hand stitch, Henley applies fragments of Japanese paper, found paper, dyed muslin, and bits of silk. Her pieces are made by a combination of dying, painting with pigments and screen-printing onto cotton calico, and then texturing the surface with various materials.

Large, spacious areas of printed and painted surface contrast with small stitched details, representative of delicate birds in their wild natural environment and the contrast between intricate detail and the vast expanse of surrounding space. The result is a thought-provoking work of art that invites the viewer to question his relationship with the natural world.

While Tydus, a 4-year-old Alaskan Malamute, is a giant goofy teddy bear, Trez, an African Grey parrot, dreams of taking over the world. “Our page displays the daily life of Tydus and our African Grey Congo, Trez, Creating a blog type feel to it through the lens of our animals,” write their owners. Taking of an Alaskan Malamute and a parrot sounds like hard work to us, and the owners admit that Tydus’ coat requires a lot of care as it matts if left unattended for too long. “He has a large stature complimented with a big chest which is often overwhelming for people, not to mention all that fur makes him look bigger,” they say. His parrot friend, on the other hand, is said to be highly intelligent, often telling Tydus to “stop it” and occasionally complimenting him with a “Good Boy Tydus”.

“Mostly my work is based on images which fall into my hands and usually I don’t make any sketches,” she told the Paperfolk blog. “I have plenty of ideas in my head (sometimes too much) which isn’t always good because I forget to realize lots of them.”

Having been raised in an artistic family, creativity was always a natural part of Bartnik’s life, but she’s mostly self-taught in the art of embroidery. “I discovered embroidery as a teenager when I found a book about folk embroidery,” she says. “I really liked it so I decided to try it myself. It came naturally to me because I had a background in various other fields of art.”

“Embroidery is very time-consuming so I had to postpone it for a while and got back to it after a few years,” she adds. “I started to play around with felt and I discovered how good it looks when it’s combined with embroidery. Soft painterly effects can be achieved by using the felting technique and look perfect in combination with an acute line of threads.”

Her embirderies are sold on her online store, but you can also enjoy them from afar by scrolling through her Instagram page.

Saara Katariina Söderlund’s illustrations prove that birds of a feather, indeed, flock together. Describing herself as “a freelance illustrator, graphic designer and bird lady from Finland,” her fascination with birds translates into whimsical gouache paintings, full of pattern and movement.

Living in the countryside with her husband and two dogs, Söderlund can be seen running around with her binoculars and watching birds. “I love birdwatching, especially in spring when the migrating species arrive back to Finland,” she shared with Flow Magazine. “My favorite place to watch them is by the water, so I guess that’s why aquatic birds are the dearest to me, but actually I love all birds. I’m definitely a bird lady.”

“Birds are so fascinating,” she went on to explain. “There are so many different species, and the spectrum of colors, shapes, patterns, and sounds seems endless. I also find age-old mythologies behind birds interesting. In so many cultures they have been used as an explanation for countless questions.”

Take a closer look at some of her wonderful creations, inspired by what Söderlund sees through her window.

Chloe Redfern fell in love with the traditional craft of embroidery because of the endless possibilities and textures that can be built up with stitch. Her creations – bright, colorful, and sweet, tend to revolve around one common theme: birds.

“One of my favorite things to embroider is birds,” she writes on her website, explaining that “their colors and patterns lend themselves so well to being translated into stitch, I really enjoy working out ways to turn certain details into areas of pattern (such as feather shapes on their wings) and working out how to stylize and simplify certain areas.”

But other animals aren’t excluded from her work and she’s inspired by both flora and fauna. “I love to stitch pictures of other animals too, and I’m also very inspired by plants, gardens and the landscape,” she writes.

Each piece begins with a preparatory drawing, that relies either on a photo or on Redfern’s imagination. When making an abstract piece, she will generally work more spontaneously, laying down stitch to see what emerges.

Here are some of our favorite bird embroideries:

Nicola Henley’s art is a delightful homage to birds and their natural landscapes. “I am continually inspired by the natural world but in particular birds and their movement within the landscape and coastal regions,” she writes on her website. “I love studying how they move across the sky and interact with air currents and wave motion, or their distinctive characteristic movement as they feed along shorelines or flock to feeding grounds.”

Daniel Merac is a Colombia based artist and photographer who is very into birds. The self-taught artist began his drawing career back in 2015 when he joined the Inktober challenge, and for all these years, he has drawn around 100 bird species.

He is also the mastermind behind Ayamormio, which is, according to his website, a brand that’s inspired by nature, love, people, emotions, literature, and poetry; elements which are always guiding him to wonderful unexplored paths.

“Drawing is a natural activity that is a part of everyone’s lives, whether we are the ones who create visual pieces or the ones who contemplate them, it’s something we’re exposed to since our childhood, and therefore anyone can do it to some degree,” Merac said. “I’ve picked these winged subjects because I’ve been drawing them for the past 3 years, and it’s been something truly therapeutical and enlightening.”

Check out his work below.
