If you grew up on Looney Tunes and similar cartoons, then the works of Chicago artist Peter Frederiksen will be right up your alley. Frederiksen is responsible for creating a series of intriguing embroidery artworks that are inspired by old-school cartoons.

Frederiksen takes an unusual approach by zooming in on particular scenes and showing them out of context. This usually involves moments of high tension or ones that foreshadow future climactic happening. By doing so, the artist creates a visually appealing piece that often contains hints of dark humor.

According to Frederiksen, the high-tension moments and escalations that take place in cartoons take a back seat and are shrouded in playfulness. His goal is to make them more pronounced with his embroidery art, which he creates using a free-motion embroidery technique.

“Using familiar imagery, I like to examine fear, panic, toxic masculinity, anxiety, anticipation, and humor, all through the lens of the shared visual language of Looney Tunes cartoons,” Frederiksen explained in a recent interview with BOOOOOOOM!.

Frederiksen presented his intriguing embroidery works through solo exhibitions at The Flat in Milan, Italy, Galleri Urbane in Dallas, Texas, and the UNION Gallery in London, UK, among others. He also shares his work on social media.

Amina is a self-taught embroiderer whose interest in the craft began around 2013-2014. She’s very passionate about flowers, which is not surprising, given that her Embroidery Journal looks like a beautiful garden. In the past, Amina has tried other crafts before even considering embroidery. And when she had done her first stitch, she fell in love immediately. It was love at first stitch.

The romantic flower images are done in long and short stitching; which technique the talented embroiderer Trish Burr uses. Although she doesn’t have an artistic background, she starts her process by creating a sketch on a piece of paper and brainstorming through the color palette. Then, she traces the drawing in Photoshop, prints it, and thinks through the whole plan of how to stitch it.

Amina is also known for her remarkable guided classes and sheets. While she makes her artwork, she takes pictures of the whole process, which is important for PDF patterns. Although it makes the process twice slower, she doesn’t care because her goal is to make detailed instructions.

“I like to compare embroidery with a mountain range. For example, let’s say you like surface embroidery. This becomes your mountain which you climb little by little, step by step. But as soon as you top it, you see many other mountains waiting for you,” Amina said in an interview for Embellished Talk.

Hillary Waters Fayle is not your usual embroidery artist. Her unusual stitching works represent an unexpected union between threads and nature and showcase the power of a gentle and careful approach to things.

While Fayle’s artistic reach encompasses mixed media, she is best known for her series of embroidered leaves. She applies threads to dried leaves, creating intricate pieces that have been fascinating art lovers worldwide.

Through her embroidery works, Fayle wants to explore the relationship between natural and fabricated material. She also puts a great emphasis on sustainability, wanting to reach a zero-waste point in her practice. The leaves she uses are collected from the area around her home in Richmond, Virginia, while the threads are usually procured from second had sources.

“Stitching, like agriculture, can be functional—a technical solution to join materials/a means of survival—or, both can be done purely in service of the soul, lifting the spirit through beauty and wonder,” she explains on her website.

Most of Hillary Waters Fayle’s works are available on her Instagram page, where she shares her newest creations. They can also be checked out in person as part of several permanent botanical exhibitions, including those in Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo, and the Arboretum Kalmthout botanical garden in Kalmthout, Belgium.

Chelsea Nelson describes herself as a full-time mom, a nap-time and bedtime embroiderer, and the person behind the business called Auburn Hoops.

Auburn Hoops was created to bring embroidery to the 21st century. The main focus is on the flexible interlocking hoop that keeps the fabric taut, as well as on the beautiful frame made of solid oak, which can be painted or decorated as desired.

Despite having an artistic background, she wasn’t originally interested in art. Instead, she graduated with a degree in biology and Christian studies. However, after being pregnant with her first child, something inspired her to get into embroidery.

“Currently my style would fit into the modern embroidery category, which is really fun and super teachable,” she said in an interview for Embellished Talk. “I would love to explore outside of that and get into the technical styles and the rich history of embroidery.”

Nelson currently has more than 20,000 Instagram followers and almost 800 posts. To see some of her hoops and creations, check out the gallery below. You can also explore her website, where you can find helpful tutorials and beautiful photographs.

Cooped up to avoid COVID-19, many of us indulge in hobbies, which help fill our time and allow room for comfort. Embroidery is a great way to pass the time and its little wonder that the past months have seen a steady rise in embroiderers, amongst other crafters.

With more than 30k followers on Instagram, you could say that Liz Stiglets is a sort of guru when it comes to the art of embroidery. The owner of cozyblue, Siglets believes that small, simple acts of creativity can make the world a calmer, happier place.

Her online store provides you embroidery kits, pre-printed patterns, and other supplies needed to take on the craft. You can also download for free her ultimate guide to embroidery, which includes stitching how-to, several methods of pattern transfer, stitching notes and diagrams, and ideas for variations and personalization.

“My favorite part is the stitching!” shared Siglets, in an interview with Random Acts of Amy. “It’s fun and exciting to see the design come to life, and I really enjoy the slow art of embroidery. My cozyblue motto is ‘slow down, get cozy, get crafty’ because I believe it is so important to take time for ourselves to be creative.” She adds that in the midst of our busy lives and hectic days, it is more important than ever to slow down and consciously tap into our creativity. “I think creative work can be a meditative practice, and I find that it is absolutely essential, not only for stress relief but for self-expression.”

Ruby Thursday More combines two of our favorite things into one: adding embroidery to jewelry to create unique necklaces and earrings that have a vintage appeal to them.

Featuring mainly floral patterns, her collections are a display of love of nature, textile, and color. In fact, color provides a sort of starting point to her work, as Thursday More admits she goes “color hunting” on the internet, as she looks for future references. Aside from color, her designs are also influenced by her mood, imagination, and memories.

“Creating is in my blood,” she admits, noting that her grandmother used to make colorful quilts, while her mother sewed pencil cases and throw pillow cases. “I try to stitch every day, even just for an hour,” she added in an interview with the Etsy blog. “I like the portability, the fact that I can take it with me wherever I go. It doesn’t require electricity. It doesn’t require the internet. With hand embroidery, you’re just in the moment.”

You can purchase her original pieces on her Etsy shop or follow her Instagram for that creative inspiration.

Feeling like you’re missing out on the great outdoors? Textile artist Emily Yeadon will help you reintroduce the natural world back into your life; in textile form, that is. Her delicate creations include faux taxidermy of insects and wood critters. There are even textile versions of fungi and moth, so you can experience the backdrop of the forest as well.

Incredibly enough, Yeadon taught herself the art of hand embroidery and sewing. “One evening, I randomly decided to dust off my old sewing machine and rekindled my love for textiles,” she recalled in an interview with Enchanted Living Magazine. “I gradually began to incorporate fabrics and machine and hand embroidery into my wire creations at the very end of 2017,” she adds.

Based in Haworth, the UK, her inspiration comes from her natural surroundings. “My favorite way to seek enchantment is by taking long walks,” says Yeadon. Having grown up in the countryside, deep in the North of England, Yeadon’s home was surrounded by open fields and ancient woodlands, while in the distance, the Yorkshire Dale mountains towered above the horizon.

“I’ve always loved climbing mountains in the Lake District with my dad and our family dog, Toby,” she says. “That moment when we finally reach the summit—icy winds whipping around us as damp heavy clouds form a blanket over our view. A peaceful moment in nature, tranquil and calm.”

There’s something endearing about miniature art, and when it comes in the form of a pin, made to be worn, all the better. A combination of illustration and embroidery, Irem Yazici’s miniature embroideries make the ideal gift – for yourself or for a friend.

“Even if I don’t know where to place my work within contemporary art right now, I do think they share similar characteristics with both illustration and fiber art and I try to achieve a balance between them,” explained the Turkish crafter in an interview with Textile Artist.

“Mostly I try to use embroidery techniques on patterns that match their real-life texture,” she went on to explain. “I enjoy combining these traditional techniques with modern patterns. I also like fancy and intricate embroideries and I wouldn’t hesitate to decorate my works with sequins and beads.”

A self-taught embroiderer, Yazici began experimenting with the thread and needle back in 2014. “My first works were a recoil of embroidery being used for only traditional and decorative purposes,” she explains. “The idea of mixing the inherent tradition of embroidery with modern ideas seemed interesting to me.” Her themes tend to include flora and fauna, with a touch of surrealism. The finished piece – greater than the sum of its parts.

This past decade has seen a revival in the art of embroidery. No longer a pastime reserved to nannies, embroidery is now where the cool kids are at. But if embroidery is cool than Olga Prinku’s flower embroideries are next-level cool.

Relying on her own special technique (which she now teaches in designated workshops), Prinku arranges dried flowers on tulle – the flowers providing an apt replacement for a needle and thread. While some flowers she dries herself, others she buys dried. She also forages for seed pods at the end of the season and picks them when they are dry already.

According to Prinku, some flowers are better than others for particular purposes. For floral embroidery hoops, for example, she looks for dry small poppies or flowers with thin stalks and no particularly big heads. Whereas for wreaths, she likes to use things like eucalyptus and olive, as well as hydrangeas and peonies.

“A lot of my ideas come from going for walks in the countryside near where I live, or things I grow in the garden,” she shared with The Italian Rêve, noting her sources of inspiration. “I love working with the seasons, so whatever is in season is my favorite at that moment!”

With spring just outside our reach, her embroidered pieces provide the perfect substitute.
