With most of us staying at home these days, creating a comfortable living space is more important than ever. And with our kitchens becoming ever more dominant, its time we treat ourselves to some proper utensils.

Kirill Babii’s wooden kitchen utensils have got us dreaming about a cottage in the mountains, a picnic on the beach, and a glorious meal. Based in Ukraine, Babii produces his utensils by hand, with reclaimed materials and economical design at the very heart of his handcrafted homegoods line.

In an interview with the Etsy blog, Babii recounted his initial inspiration for his wooden creations. “On my way home from university one day in 2012, I came across a sycamore branch,” he recalled, somewhat poetically. “I was getting my masters in technical processes and production, but at that very moment I realized I didn’t want to spend my life in factories. I wanted to connect with other human beings and with nature.”

It was then that he began collecting wood from around the city, using it create his woodwork. “It was very inspiring to rebirth dead wood into something with another function,” he says. “I loved the process of creation.”

Nowadays he works almost exclusively with two sorts of wood: walnut wood and apricot tree. “I like them more than others because they are very beautiful,” he writes on his website, “enough strong to serve for many years even in delicate forms, malleable enough to work with it with comfort.”

Working from home makes us rethink our approach to interior design. And while a full-on renovation isn’t on the cards for us, a small furniture update might do the trick.

Take for instance Maria Fiter’s original lamps. Made from papier-mache, her products oscillate between art and design, with her passion for sculpture visible in her use of organic shapes. Aside from being stylish, her work is also ecological and sustainable, with her designs made of reclaimed paper.

“I wanted to be eco-friendly, and when I learned that paper maché can be made out of newspaper I was very happy that I could reuse what people were throwing away,” explained Fiter in an interview with the Etsy blog. “It’s great when you can reuse things that already exist and give them a second life,” she adds.

Her creative designs add a clever, natural touch to your home in exciting new ways. “I think about people who like natural materials, like paper or wood,” says Fiter. “That’s the kind of person I am; I like these materials in my home, too. I also think about making things that are quite simple in design.”

Staying home has never been more critical. But with that comes the added responsibility of making our surroundings fit this new, impossible reality. Now is the time to look up to interior designers for tips and tricks.

Our first stop is Eny Lee Parker. A designer of objects and spaces, she’s known for her artistic take on furniture design, with her creations being both decorative and functional. Her materials of choice include wood, metals, and ceramics.

“I always start with a topic that I am really interested in whether it is feminism or an art movement,” she shared with Matter of Hand, relaying her creative process. “Then I sketch a bunch, make a lot of mood boards, start some model making or prototypes, and after that I make it.”

Born in Brazil and currently based in Savannah, Georgia, Lee Parker started out with interior design before discovering a passion for furniture design. “I never had confidence that I could actually design things until I came back to Savannah and enrolled in a master’s program for furniture,” she explains.

I took a scarf weaving class and was completely hooked. Ever since I have been taking as many weaving classes as I can and reading books and trying out different techniques.”

“I wasn’t an artist before I started weaving and honestly felt pretty intimidated to jump in,” she admits. But according to her, the weaving community has been amazingly accepting. “All these wonderful people sharing their work and explaining techniques, it really resonates with me,” she says.

Now, more than ever, is time to rethink our interior design. A beautiful home, after all, means a more pleasant experience overall, and how we divide our space may actually affect how we perceive our reality. These days, we’re taking notes from Russian interior designer, Dmitry Reutov. His original work revolves mainly around color stories, with his interiors transporting us to different universes altogether.

“When creating interiors, I always turn to nature, asking myself what it would look like in nature,” explained Reutov in an interview with Sixtysix Magazine. “Even when I look at plastic as a modern man-made material, I associate it with nature. I can relate transparent plastic to ice.”

Since 2007, Reutov runs his own architectural and construction company, with his studio conducting projects of varying complexity from residential interiors to business spaces. The studio then implements projects with its own team of builders.

His work takes him all over the world, from New York to Spain. “My schedule is tight, but it’s hard to describe a typical day,” he admits. “I don’t call it work. This is a process for me, a process I love. I’m solving problems. Seven days a week.”

Though not everyone can afford his services, there’s inspiration to be found in his work. His interiors prove that a bold choice of color makes all the difference between a boring living room and a space worth inhabiting. Take a look for yourself:

What happens when you add ingenuity and biology to industrial design? Jan Klingler’s custom lamps could be one possible answer. Made to resemble Petri dishes and test tubes, his lamps showcase samples of bacteria. These samples are swabbed from people, places or things that hold a position of importance, and are grown into a unique piece in the form of commissioned work.

According to Klingler, when producing a piece for commissioned work, the customer is very much involved in this process, choosing the colors that grow and the bacteria swabbed. “The possibilities are as individual as each one of us,” he writes on his website, noting that you can swab anything from the location of a first date, a personal souvenir from a memorable journey, or the remainder of loved one far away.

After a growth period of 24 to 48 hours, the microorganisms are fully sealed within resin to stop the growth and to preserve them for eternity. An LED light source incorporated into a custom silicone plug highlights the visual quality of the growth pattern and colors from above or below.

“We all consist of 10 times more bacteria than human cells,” reads his website. “Every living being and place has its own unique and personal microbiological fingerprint. In a crossover between science, art, and industrial design, the bacteria lamp uses this fact to create stand out conversational pieces.”

With our lives dictated these days by the spread of viruses and bacteria, Klingler’s lamps take on a whole other meaning. Take a look for yourself:

Jean-Luc Godard has a way around wood and metal. With a background in furniture design and custom sign making, Godard is keen on working with raw materials, from which he forms distinct, naturalistic sculptures that make for wonderful statement pieces. But it’s his unique lamps (or rather, sculptural lighting), that first caught our attention.

Using organic designs that remind of the shapes and forms found in nature, his sculptural lightings seem like an extension – or response – to our natural surroundings. “I pride myself on having a keen eye for choosing the perfect materials,” writes Godard on his website, “those with beautiful natural curves and unique grain to the wood, which make my pieces unique and which define my work as that of a naturalist.”

“While others may develop one style and reproduce countless versions of it, for me, the creative process is a journey that takes you to places limited only by your imagination,” he adds. As such, his work isn’t confined to one specific style or theme.

Originally from France, Godard moved to the United States in 1989 and now resides in Connecticut. With his cozy studio situated at the edge of nature preserve in the rolling foothills of the Berkshires, and overlooking a meadow in full bloom, Godard’s sculptures blend nicely with their surroundings.

Interior design doesn’t always have to be about breaking your walls and breaking the bank. Sometimes, it’s the smallest details that make a difference: a unique lamp, an original coat hanger, or in Karrie Dean’s case: a cotton throw designed with eye-popping shapes and colors. A blanket designer by trade, Dean makes the case for textile art.

“There’s nothing wrong with loving color,” states her website. “Loving cozy. I don’t know about you, but I get the feeling you hate boring and scratchy as much as I do.” Whether thrown across the bed or folded on a shelf, her blankets provide little window panes of color that add up to make a piece of practical art.

According to her website, Dean discovered a passion for textiles, after being fired from her day job in advertising. That was when she decided to put her art degree to good use. “I started sketching,” she recalled, “spent a ridiculous amount of time tracking down some awesome artisans who can do the softest, happiest things with beautiful fibers, and the rest is, well, it’s not history, because it’s still happening.”

Colorful, textured, and comforting, her blankets proved to be the best canvas. “Even though I didn’t have money, I was looking at throws,” she told the Kansas City Star. “I thought of that as an accessory, but something that still, you open it up and it’s big and it’s pretty and you can put something on it, and it can be art kind of.”

Here are some examples of the ways in which a good blanket can make for a fun addition to your home.

Miranda Moreira life philosophy is simple but poignant: staying present. “I try to be aware of living in the present and enjoying each day, even the harder ones,” she relayed in an interview with the Little Citizens Boutique Blog.

Her brand, Bride & Wolfe, is very much the embodiment of this notion. Known for her eye-popping designs, she produces vibrant objects and decorations inspired by art and popular culture. Those are meant to be hung as statement pieces, adding a playful edge to your otherwise mundane surroundings.

Launched in 2005, her brand specializes in limited edition, hand-finished home pieces paying particular attention to design and materials. Her designs include graphic art pieces made from mirror, enamel, and powder-coated steel, characterized by modern forms and a bold sense of color.

“I’m so visual, seeing colors and patterns whilst food shopping can be as inspiring as looking through art books or surfing the net,” admitted Moreira. “I’ve become more nostalgic since I’ve become a mum, and my childhood in St Kilda is hugely influential- panel vans, hot summers on the beach, icypoles and Oz rock!”

Her products are all designed in Australia and made in small quantities in collaboration with local Melbourne makers, which make for an extra fabulous (and oftentimes, truly unique) addition to your home.

With almost 40k followers on Instagram, Rose Pearlman doesn’t just promote her rugs, she promotes a certain kind of lifestyle, based on softness, minimalism, and a love of textile.

With a background in fine arts and a love of well designed functional objects, Pearlman took to rug hooking as a way of being a staying creative while being a stay at home mother. While painting involved a separate studio space with long stretches of solitude, rug hooking proved the ideal medium for her, taking little space and making little mess.

Now a celebrated artist and textile designer, she also teaches others her craft, through monthly rug hooking workshops in and around her home in NYC.

“Finding a way to do what I love and make an income, and not burn out is still a struggle to balance,” she relayed in a candid interview with Making. “While making a business of rug hooking removes you from the actual process, teaching workshops feeds my creativity and passion. I am able to share my love of rug hooking, create work at a comfortable pace and stay true to my vision.”

Situated at a crossroads between art and craft, her work has been featured in fiber magazines, galleries, and numerous online design sites. “The medium can easily be controlled and designed,” explains Pearlman, adding that hooked rugs can be used for a variety of home accessories and objects.
