If you regularly spend time on social media, then the chances are that you came across the works from Alessandro Malossi. This Italian artist, who has almost 200,000 followers on Instagram, creates impressive thought-provoking photo manipulations that reflect everyday life.

Malossi started his artistic journey as a student at the New Academy of Fine Arts where he “acquired technique and began to paint inside the edges.” After graduating, he began exploring other ways to express his creativity which included making illustrations, working as a tattoo artist, and even engaging in fashion art. This brought him collaborations with high-profile brands such as Calvin Klein and Nike.

Most recently, Malossi engaged in digital art and photo manipulations that reflect his “daily distorted and surrealistic vision of the world.” These works have been quite popular among internet users as they encourage them to think about common things in a different way.

For example, one of Malossi’s works shows a cigarette burning in a shape of a gun, representing a deadly consequence of smoking. Another imagines popular streaming music service Spotify as a pack of pills, illustrating the fact that music is a daily therapy for a large number of people.

Check out Malossi’s creations below.

Art director and designer Santi Zoraidez creates digital illustrations that are unique as they are strange. His creative blend of abstract and surreal concepts makes him a true visionary, with the end result often performing as an imaginative landscape that strikes the viewer.

“I like to see how shapes and objects interact with each other, and how I can use the way that they look to communicate an idea,” explained Zoraidez in an interview with Grafik. “Whether in motion or as still image, this is the way I approach a project.”

With almost 70,000 followers and clients like Apple, Nike and Ikea, his colorful explorations have clearly registered with other people. With a passion for interior design and architecture, alongside graphic design and art installations, his work has both an artistic and commercial appeal.

“I always try to mix these different influences within my own work,” he shares. “There is something interesting to me about the compositions I can create and the way that shapes interact with each other, together with a sense of space or volume, and referring mostly to real materials.”

On top of his passion for design, his work also has an element of humor in it that add to an overall sense of quirky surrealism. Show him some love on Instagram.

Illustrator Jade Purple Brown describes herself as a “color-obsessed visual artist.” And with a name that includes no less than three colors, the proof is clearly there. “My name was actually given to me by a friend who was trying to figure out my middle name,” she told Design Milk. “She jokingly guessed Purple since my first and last name already happen to be colors. I loved the way Jade Purple Brown sounded, so I decided to use it as my artist name.”

According to Brown, her name is a clear depiction of the work she does, which she describes as “colorful, strong, and unique.” Indeed, there’s an overall sense of confidence in her illustrated works. Centered around female characters, her subjects – fashionable and confident – look large and in charge.

Her color choices remind of the ’70s aesthetics – an era which also provides Brown with endless sources of inspiration. “I love collecting ’70s interior design books for inspiration,” she says. “The over-the-top colorful palettes, quirky motifs, and the overall carefree attitude of the ’70s excite me, and those are elements that I like to bring into my work.”

“I love creating designs and illustrations for brands that share a similar vision and purpose,” she adds. “It’s the best feeling when brands specifically come to me for my personal style and push me to pump out my very best work.” Based in New York, her work has drawn clients as big as Apple, Facebook, Sephora, and Google. You’d want to follow her work yourself.

Bold, brash, and most often than not, pink, Kasia’s digital illustrations have a fashionable air to them. Describing her creative style as “obsessive perfectionism,” her work mostly consists of portraits, with her characters looking cool and collected.

But her work isn’t just meant to be aesthetically pleasing. According to Kasia, her illustrations articulate the very feelings she felt while making them, be it happiness, euphoria, heartache, or grief. “I try not to tiptoe around the subject,” she told Jung Katz, “instead, I want to examine and explore these sensations with a scalpel.”

“Art is a powerful tool it has that unique ability to engage individuals in a very deep and personal way,” she notes. “It’s like the door to other people’s minds and hearts. When people open them to you, you receive a rare chance to show them the world, through your own eyes.”

With Kasia’s work, the door seems to be wide open. Since graduating from the University of Marie Curie Sklodowska in Lublin Poland with a Master’s Degree in Arts, her work has been showcased at Berlin’s Biennale of Illustration and Graphic Art, blue-chip gallery Walton Fine Arts in London, and other notable exhibitions.

In an interview for Bored Panda, the London-based artist explained that art gives meaning to her life and knowing that she can give life to macrocosm that she constantly has in mind.

“I try to make my characters anonymous as much as possible so that everyone can be free to project themselves,” Meziani said and added that she entirely works digitally. “90% of the time, I sit in front of an empty artboard open in Illustrator, put on some (very loud) music and try to reproduce what I have in mind. What was the last thing that recently inspired me? Sitting on a night train? Looking through the window of my room at 3 am? Or was it the dream I had last night?”

There’s a certain cheekiness to Irene Raspollini’s portraits that’s well-intended. A self-taught illustrator and painter, her characters (mostly female, sometimes male) are heavily blushed, their rosy cheeks complimenting their bright pastel colors.

“As a self-taught artist, my practice evolved a bit randomly at the beginning,” acknowledged the Italian illustrator in a piece published on Artsy Shark. “As soon as I decided to take my art more seriously, I worked systematically to improve my skills, and above all to find my own style and narrative.”

But like most creatives, Raspollini’s introduction to art was much earlier. “As long as I can remember, painting and drawing have been two constant elements in my life,” she recalled. “These talents are a family thing and I was lucky enough to have been always encouraged by my fiancé, my parents, and my friends to improve my artistic abilities and express myself through art.”

Inspired and influenced by pop culture and kitsch, her techniques are varied and include acrylics, watercolors, and tile mosaics. Most recently, she’s also introduced augmented reality to her work. “Thanks to an app for mobile devices, it is possible to make paintings appear to come alive,” Raspollini explained. “I’m pretty sure that this technology will be used more in the art world in the near future,” she ventured a guess.

With her work creating a small buzz online and exhibited around the world in countries like Italy, the UK, Mexico, China, Russia, and the US, this is only the beginning for Raspollini. Take note.

Miguel Chevalier creates digital installations that are meant to be experienced. Based on light and color, his digital work seems to be in constant metamorphosis, plunging the viewer into magical, sometimes, universes.

Featuring themes like nature and artifice, flows and networks, virtual cities and ornate designs, Chevalier creates palpable images that invite the viewer to look into himself and provides insight about our relationship with the changing world around us.

Known as one of the pioneers of both digital and virtual art, Chevalier has been utilizing computers in his work since 1978, aiming to create immersive installations. “Immersion is a central concept in my work because it gives the viewer new and unusual experiences in art and enriched the world of emotiveness,” he noted once, in an interview with Visual Atelier 8.

“I am interested in developing multi-sensory creations that stimulate all the senses (sight, hearing, smell).”

His projects incorporate generative and interactive virtual reality installations projected on large scale, shown on Leds screen or LCD screen, sculptures created with a 3D printer or with laser-cut, holographic imagery, and other forms. The interactivity of his work also adds a quality of playfulness to his art. It’s this playfulness, alongside a sense of etherealness that’s come to be recognized with his work, that makes his art a profound experience.

3D artist and illustrator, Sonal Jadhav, invites us to step inside her digital landscapes. Born in India and currently based in the Netherlands, her expressed goal is to deliver imagery that surpasses the brief – creating art that is pleasing to the senses, whilst focusing on color and composition. As such, her imagery attracted clients around the world, with her illustrations featured in advertising campaigns and editorials alike.

But like all good things, it took Jadhav some time to establish a coherent style and artistic voice. After years of playing around with different aesthetics, she says that she found a passion for creating surreal digital spaces.

“When I am creating an illustration in 3D, I start by collecting a lot of real-life references,” she relayed in an interview with Ballpitmag. Inspired by photography, architecture, modern art and textiles, she’s also a fan of artists like Constantin Brâncuși, Peter Tarka and Cabeza Patata.

“Once I visualize it in my head, I go straight to 3D and build basic shapes,” she explained. “I spend a good amount of time on creating compositions with those basic shapes.” According to Jadhav, composition is key. “At this stage, I prefer lighting my scene as it helps me in composing and see how shapes react to light,” she adds. “Then I get into adding details to those 3D shapes, play with materials and render to bring my imagination to life.”

Here are some highlights from her Instagram page.

Singapore-based illustrator and art director, Elen Winata, describes herself as a naturally quiet person who uses art as a way to express herself. “It is a big part of me and I am lucky to be able to make a living through it,” she relayed in a candid interview with Ballpitmag. “I’ve also enjoyed how art has been used to promote messages and causes that would otherwise take a long time to express. A picture does speak a thousand words.”

If a picture, indeed, speaks a thousand words, Winata’s illustrations do so rather effortlessly. Known for her vector style of illustrations, her aesthetic relies on clean shapes and a limited color palette. In other words, her artwork cuts to the chase.

“I mostly work in vector because that’s what I’m used to and work fastest in,” explained Winata. “With the right brushes/textures you can use it to emulate drawings done organically. Vector drawings can also be scaled up easily, making vector a versatile medium for adaptations to different formats.”

With an Associate’s Degree in Graphic Design from The Art Institute of New York City, Winata’s work includes illustration, digital, design, and advertising. We highly recommend you follow her work online, via Instagram.

Mathew Borrett’s digital cityscapes are the kinds you might find in a post-apocalyptic video game. Inspired by both his admiration for architecture as well as fantasy, Borrett admits that his early love for LEGO also plays a big part in his work.

“I was born in 1972 and grew up in rural Ontario,” he writes on his website. “I was fortunate to have a big ancient barn to play in. Despite an acute allergy to hay, I would build elaborate hay forts. There were woods and beaver ponds nearby to explore. During those weeks of the summer when too much pollen was about, I’d retreat to my room where I would draw, build elaborate things out of Lego, and make primitive computer graphics on my Commodore 64.”

Now he builds imagined worlds full time, working as an illustrator as well as an environment/concept artist in the film and TV industry. According to Borrett, some people find his spaces claustrophobic, while others want to linger inside them. “I enjoy the combination of the creepy and the whimsical,” he once remarked in an interview with Line Gallery. “Perhaps this boils down to wanting my drawings to be haunted in the same way that my dreams locales often feel haunted.”

This sense of hauntedness is also the result of his landscapes being eerily devoid of any human presence. “I hope that a viewer will be able to put themselves in my spaces,” he explained. “To that end, I’ve avoided adding any figures of any kind to inhabit the rooms, so the viewer is free to imagine themselves inhabiting them if they choose.”

Enter at your own risk.
