After losing his job as a landscape company manager in 2020, Canada native Keenan Holcombe decided to take his mom’s sewing machine and start making clothing items and accessories to pass the time. What started off as a hobby became a successful business and made him a viral TikTok content creator.

Holcombe started trending on social media earlier this year after he posted a video in which he turned an Aladdin sleeping bag into a puffer jacket. His creation has a cool retro vibe and is so well-crafted that you could never tell the jacket was once a sleeping bag.

Holcombe decided to venture into the business of making clothes out of vintage, mostly pop culture-themed, sleeping bags and other items after he noticed his friends loved creations and wanted to own them. He decided to have a one-month test run and discovered that he earned more money by selling his fashion pieces than he did working at his previous job.

Holcombe started a company called Rye Dylan Reworks, which has been growing strong ever since.

According to Holcombe, he finds the material for his business by visiting thrift stores and picking up sleeping bags, blankets, towels, and more. He focuses on items decorated with pop culture motifs ranging from Disney movies and Marvel superheroes to video games and anime. This gives his fashion pieces an element of nostalgia that his customers like.

Most children dream about becoming astronauts, actors, or musicians. But 7-year-old Max Alexander doesn’t want any of this; he wants to become the next great fashion designer and currently seems on a great way to actually do it.

Alexander started making his first dress designs and clothes when he was four. Since then, he has established himself as the fashion’s newest rising star. He is selling his pieces all over the world while even receiving commissions from celebrities.

Thanks to his great skills, Alexander also got himself a huge social media following. He has 1.5 million followers on Instagram, where his mother Sherri Madison shares his newest creations.

In a recent chat with PEOPLE, Madison revealed that neither she nor any member of the family had a role in Max’s choice; the boy simply said that he wanted to be a dressmaker one day and started doing it.

“He just started making dresses, it was the craziest thing,” she told the media outlet. “I ran and got my husband. I was like, ‘Come out of your office, you have to see what Max is doing. It’s crazy.’ “

Despite already having more than 100 original designs and putting together several fashion shows, Max has much bigger goals for himself.

“He wants to be the head of the house of Gucci or he wants to have his own atelier, Couture to the Max Italian,” Madison added.

One thing that constantly changes and evolves is fashion. What was considered fashionable today probably wouldn’t be considered fashionable in Ancient Egypt and vice-versa. This is one of the reasons why it is fascinating to look at the fashion of the past and compare it to modern times. And thanks to Crow’s Eye Productions’ popular series Getting Dressed in…, that is easier than ever.

Getting Dressed in… is a series of YouTube videos that aim to “bring alive history through beautifully-crafted videos using historically accurate period costume and locations.” Each video is dedicated to a particular era, like Renaissance Florence, Roman Britain, or the 14th century, and takes a detailed look at how people dressed back then.

The actors in the video are shown putting on authentic costumes that correspond to the topic of the video while the narrator tells the viewer more details about the things they see on their screens. This includes a historic background of the period, the reasoning behind particular items of clothing, and some fun facts.

Crow’s Eye Productions was established by filmmaker Nicole Loven in 2005. Nicole is responsible for filming and directing the videos while her mother, Pauline, a period costumier, and costume historian, researches and produces the videos.

Getting Dressed in… series currently has 36 videos. Here are a few of them.

It doesn’t get more Parisian than Jeanne Damas’ clothing brand, Rouje. Catering for your French girl sensibilities, Rouje is known for its perfect cuts and beautiful fabrics. It’s the next best thing after a vacation in Paris!

As its creative director, Damas sets the tone, chooses between puffy or long sleeves, and translates her vision and inspiration into fashionable attire. Collaborating with friends and other talents she nitpicks, Rouje is a sincere, free, and open-minded brand.

“What’s la vie en Rouje about?”, reads a caption on the brand’s website. “Putting lipstick with your fingers, adjusting your skirt to give your legs some sunshine while ‘en terrasse’ at a café. Wearing a dress on a bicycle and jeans for a night out. Surrounding yourself with beautiful souls and witty friends. And missing the métro stop because that book is just too good.” A Parisian ideal.

Launched in 2016, the brand is inspired by women and womanhood, be it a woman spotted on the street, on Instagram, or in vintage magazines. When asked where she draws her inspiration from in an interview with Coveteur, Damas replied: “Everywhere! Women in the streets, my mother, my friends, movies.” The brand’s goal: to take a new stand on femininity that is sensual and not cliché.

True to the Parisian spirit, Damas’ style is a mixture of high brow and low brow, couture and streetwear. “I like to dress with slight juxtapositions,” she notes. “I feel contradictions create the right balance. A mix of nostalgia and modernity, masculine and feminine, or casual and elegant.”

“For example, if I’m wearing a t-shirt and jeans, I’ll put on a coral lipstick and add pearl hoops,” she explains. “Or if I am wearing a wrap dress with heeled mules, I’ll throw my boyfriend’s oversized jacket on top—or one of the boyfriend jackets I designed for Rouje precisely to get that effect.”

Jeanne Damas’ taste for vintage also inspires the brand’s collections. Every Rouje piece is created with the goal to be timeless, made to last and be cherished, no matter what the current trend is. We recommend following the brand on Instagram for its straight-up chicness.

Long before launching her own jewelry brand, Giulia Tordini was an Italian household name. A Milan “It Girl”, she’s known for her effortless street style and bold eye looks. Her brand, Leda Madera, is named after her grandmother—the muse and inspiration behind Tordini’s unique designs.

According to Tordini, her passion for Art Deco jewelry sparked at a young age, when taking careful notice of her grandmother’s stacked, statement rings. Indeed, the Leda Madera pieces have an Art Deco look that will add an artistic flair to any outfit. Carefully cast in Italy, the graphic pieces have a vintage twist to them, crafted with the label’s signature pleated detail that’s meant to give the look of movement.

“The ‘pleated element’ movement is at the core of my designs,” explained Tordini in an interview with Moda Operandi. “You will find it in all three families within the collection.”

But while her main inspiration comes from her grandmother, Tordini’s fashion sensibilities are tied to other family members. According to the young designer, her father has a showroom in Italy and the whole family has grown up breathing fashion. She herself graduated in Fashion Communication at IED and worked in the Communication Department of the family business. Tordini has also worked as Art Director for a few emerging brands and boutiques.

Aside from her family, other sources of inspiration include cinema and other forms of visual art: “My collection references Art Deco architecture from Paris and New York, and the whole Italian end-of-the-’80’s, beginning-of-the-’90s contained opulence,” she notes. “At the time, Art Deco was a symbol of modernity and luxury, and my brand has the same characteristics: eternal, it starts from the past and looks to the future, and can be passed on from one generation to another.”

Her timeless pieces can be worn by every woman, from day to night, paired with a casual look or more formalwear. Visit her Instagram to see some more pieces.

When it comes to Instagram fashion no brand does it better than Staud. Co. Founded in 2015 by Sarah Staudinger and George Augusto, the LA-based brand is based upon the idea that fashion shouldn’t just empower women—it should be accessible too.

Indeed, the brand has come to be known for its playful yet wearable designs, with their cute accessories at the very forefront. Amongst their trendier items you’ll find bright-colored handbags, ’50s-inspired jumpsuits, and colorful frocks.

“We think our bags are unique and fun but at the same time have a really timeless essence to them,” Staudinger relayed once in an interview with Harper’s BAZAAR. “I think our customers see their style versatility and are excited about creating outfits with them.”

But according to Staudinger, it’s important for her that her designs aren’t just trendy or disposable. “We wanted to create collections that were not overly trend driven that had a timeless quality and remain affordable,” she stressed in the same interview.

“In a perfect world, you have clothing you will love forever arrive at your door and fit you perfectly,” she added in another interview with SSENSE. “Right? And I felt really passionately that Staud should do all of these things.”

“There’s a beauty in staying flexible,” she added. “Being able to react to your customers. And, I think my Attention Deficit Disorder approach actually resonates with customers. For better or worse, that’s just how I operate mentally. Everyone told me to start small and just sell yourself, and one thing at a time… or whatever. But that version of my story just never really happened. It’s always been go big or go home.”

Her “go big or go home” seems to have paid off (on Instagram alone the brand has amassed almost half a million followers). With scrupulous attention to detail, a natural opposition to the typical, and a feminine aura that’s equal parts seductive and self-governing, this is one brand you don’t want to miss out on. Trust us.

It all started with simple handbag: a half-moon silhouette and bamboo slats. Known as the Ark bag, there was a time when you couldn’t scroll through Instagram without spotting it, with celebrities like Jessica Alba, Michelle Williams, and Chrissy Teigen all embracing it wholly. Considered a summer “it” bag, this simple accessory launched Cult Gaia, founded by designer Jasmin Larian. These days, the brand is much bigger than its handbags, sporting anything from quirky shoes to luxurious resort wear.

“The name Gaia comes from the goddess of Mother Earth and the daughter of chaos, the most creative force there is in my opinion,” relayed Larian in a piece published on Anupam Dabral’s website. “And every great brand is cult-like, uniting like-minded people in their aesthetic ideals. Women and nature are endlessly inspiring, so there is a lot in the name.”

But though wholly artistic, the brand also aims to be approachable and functional, creating items that are Objet d’Art whilst still having utility. “In the market, it was always hard for me to find artful pieces that felt special and wearable, with an affordable price point,” explained Larian. “I love the idea of keeping special pieces forever.”

True to her word, Larian’s accessories, and more specifically her bags, stand on their own and have a very sculptural quality about them without being overt. The brand’s design ethos is to make things stand out and turn heads. “Pieces should be perfectly imperfect and need to be nuanced to be beautiful, like nature, no two things are ever the same,” reads Cult Gaia’s website. Summer is right around the bend and we couldn’t be more hyped up. With life slowly returning to a new normal, we’re looking forward to filling our closet with summer-infused designs. One brand we’ve had our eyes on for quite a while is Andrea Iyamah.

Founded in 2011 by Nigerian fashion designer Andrea Dumebi Iyamah, the clothing line is strongly inspired by ethnic cultures and elements of nature. Born in 1993, Iyamah has a flair for fashion and the arts, and founded the successful brand at the incredibly early age of 17.

“I always had an affinity to art and design of all kinds, but clothing design really kicked off when I was in university,” shared the young talent in an interview with The Folklore. “Having a formal education and vocational skills were very important, so the challenge was balancing both without losing on either.”

According to Iyamah, her brand was fuelled by her passion for creativity with the goal to celebrate her African roots and cultures beyond. Iyamah stresses that she was determined to build an African-owned brand that was rich and bold in style and most importantly internationally accessible.

“My Nigerian roots are quite a part and parcel of me that it comes quite natural to include some elements that portray the culture,” says Iyamah. “Nigerians are energetic, vibrant and confident which are elements that are evident in A.I. designs. Also having our flagship A.I. studio, and operating out of there, keeps the inspiration fresh and relevant.”

With some 200k fans on Instagram alone, her brand is more than accessible. For over a decade Iyamah has gained repeated recognition for her work in fashion and has been featured in top-tier publications like Vogue, Forbes, InStyle, and Huff Post. You’d want to take note!

Gracie J is on top of her game when it comes to nail art. A trailblazer in the nail industry, she’s gained popularity thanks to her over-the-top nail art that includes textural and 3D designs, blurring the line between manicure and art.

A trained nail tech and self-taught artist currently based in NYC, J is most noted for her work as former Lead Nail Stylist for TNT’s critically-acclaimed television series CLAWS, which premiered back in 2018. But naturally, her relationship with both nails and art began much earlier. In fact, according to J, she’s been doing her nails since the age of 13.

“My mom is a very flashy person; she always had her nails done,” she recalled in an interview with Coveteur. “If we’re going to a simple BBQ, she’ll wear a gypsy skirt and shirt with chains—she’s the flashy Haitian mom.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CNlw1rWJQfl/

“I also went to school in Haiti for a little while when I was younger, and they would line you up and check your hygiene, including your nails. They would send you home if it wasn’t up to par.”

According to J, she would also do her sister’s and my mom’s nails. “I wanted to do anyone and everyone’s nails,” she admits. “Now nails with smiley faces are trending, but I did that when I was a teen. And did a pretty bomb job.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CNcrYmQpFAh/

These early experiences also taught J the benefits of carving her own path for herself. According to J, she decided to pursue a path of entrepreneurship because she doesn’t like to be boxed in and wanted to be creative and successful on her own terms.

And as for inspiration? She tends to find plenty of it. “I derive inspiration from other places, from all kinds of artists, like jewelry designers,” she notes. “But sometimes I just have an idea that pops in my head.”

Spring is the ideal time for a change of pace, especially when it comes to your wardrobe. With most of us adjusting this spring to a new normal, now is the perfect time to celebrate change, wholeheartedly. Our first stop: getting a manicure.

If you’re looking for nail art inspo this spring, we recommend following Betina Goldstein. A full-time editorial and campaign nail artist, Goldstein is known for her eye for detail, her manicures ranging from the minimal to the lavish, including rhinestone-embellished nails and negative space manis.

“I focus on designs that are more contemporary and they have intricate detail and dimension, but don’t necessarily overwhelm your nails,” she explained her aesthetic in an interview with Elle.

“It’s all about the placement of the nail art. It’s really minimal. At the same time, some of my nail designs are really out there: I’ll do chains on the nails—but with a sheer base.”

Having recently relocated from New York to Los Angeles, Goldstein has worked with celebrities as big as Bella Hadid, Zoë Kravitz, and Billie Eilish. Her inspiration comes from the fashion scene, but also from arts and crafts.

“I’m always going into craft stores and finding like random things around my house to put on my nails,” she admits. “One time I had this Chanel ribbon, and it was too beautiful to throw away so I just cut out each letter and then place them on my nails. I don’t know what the inspiration, I just see that object and I’m like, oh I could do something with this. That’s it!”

Not one to shy away from a good challenge, Goldstein actually strives for it. “I love designs that challenge me and really require a lot of tiny details and a lot of patience,” she notes. And while working on her nails doesn’t take long, recreating her art on other clients takes more time and patience.

Scroll down to see some pieces from their recent collection.
