Art seems to run in Katie Rodgers’ veins. Her aunt gifted her with her first professional set of watercolors before the age of seven, and according to Rodgers, it was love at first sight. Growing up in Georgia, Rodgers was a country girl and would often escape both outside to the garden, or inside into her own imaginative worlds. After drawing the majority of her young life, she continued her hobby by studying Industrial Design in college.

Now based between New York City and Santa Fe, New Mexico, her work still draws upon her early inspirations. Nature, and more particularly flowers, are a constant theme in her work. But living in New York, her work also draws from New York City runways and fashion magazines, a unique cocktail of flora and fashion.

While she initially worked as an apparel designer, it wasn’t long before her fanciful watercolors caught the attention of high-end designers such as Cartier, Valentino, and Swarovski. Her work has also appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Glamour Magazine, Elle Magazine, and The New York Times. She is often commissioned by designers to illustrate their designs to give them a more natural, flowing look.

“My work has evolved over the years, but the figures within my work are often a bit abstract,” she relayed in an interview with Impakter. “I try to keep them as simple as possible. I believe there’s something interesting where my viewer can look at my work and fill in the details in their own way.”

Inspirations include ballet, music, quiet moments, and mystery. But when in doubt she always returns to her garden. “To be honest, it surprised me how much I started to care about the plants (and the fact that they flourished under my once black thumb), and how much they became a part of my life,” she described once in a post about her love of gardening. “Somewhere in that time, they inspired me to create artwork that felt like this little garden of mine. Something unkempt but peaceful. Something that could bloom and grow.”

And while her personal work is more flowing and stems from within, she admits that working with fashion brands can be trickier. “It’s a challenge I enjoy to create something that speaks my style and vision, but also speaks for the brand’s vision. There’s a fine line between too little creative direction and too much. It can be tricky!”, says Rodgers.

Paper flower bouquets are a great way of preserving the beauty of nature while aiming for sustainability. With wedding season in full bloom, paper flowers are also a great option to consider, adding a unique touch to your once-in-a-lifetime event.

Christine Ciovarta’s paper flowers aren’t just simple additions. They’re an expression of art, creativity, and colors. A fashion designer and painter, Ciovarta decided to study the art of paper flowers after coming across a picture of a paper flower online in 2012. “I was fascinated about the idea and had the instant thought that I can make paper flowers,” she explains on her website.

A self-taught paper artist, she learned the techniques of making paper flowers by herself, and after a few years of learning and practice decided to quit her job and take a leap of faith. Her paper blooms are a way of expressing her talent, craftsmanship, and the techniques she developed over the years, with the finished product flowers look very lifelike. Her products also include bridal headpieces that are a perfect addition to a romantic/bohemian wedding.

“With every flower I make I try to capture the realistic look as good as I can,” says Ciovarta, “my customers are always telling me stories how people always mistake my flowers with real ones, which gives me so much pride and joy.”

Naturally, her working process begins outdoors: researching real flowers. “I study many images with them, I make sketches, mood boards and think of ways to reproduce and practice them,” explains Ciovarta. “After these steps are ready I make all the flowers, greenery, buds, and other elements necessary for my bouquet.”

Made from crepe paper which is painted and laminated, her flowers are meant to last forever. “I feel so grateful that I can make something beautiful with my own two hands,” says Ciovarta.

Jess Phoenix’s illustrations can be boiled down to two ingredients: flowers and color. As such, her Instagram page provides a sort of haven in times of quarantine. Sold as embellished art prints (with splashes of gold and neon paint), her illustrations are also featured on stationery, book covers, and embroidery, adding up to a vibrant universe where it is always springtime.

“True creativity is like an itch that you LOVE to scratch using your curiosity,” observed Phoenix in an interview with Papirmass. “You can just keep scratching it; it never gets old!” According to Phoenix, she feels that exact itch when it comes to color. “I’m curious about color, which makes me want to explore it and ‘get creative’ with it,” she says.

Color, more than flowers or nature in general, was what pushed Phoenix’s creative practice. “My work emerged from a desire to produce art as bright and as vibrant as I wanted,” she explains. “I love my day job, but sometimes I’m told to change my colors so they ‘don’t vibrate so much.’ I WANT my art to vibrate!”

A creative spirit, she notes that creativity is contagious and is well within our reach. “Everyone has something they’re curious about, so I think everyone has that innate potential to explore that curiosity and in turn, be creative,” says Phoenix. Words to live by!

When it comes to planning the perfect wedding, the devil is most definitely in the details. And more often than not, it’s the smallest details that make or break an event. With “The Faux Bouquets”, at least you’ll know you’re covered in one area: the flower arrangement that is.

Wedding floral designer Brittany Kinney launched her brand with one goal in mind: providing a stress-free flower bouquet (because no one wants an unexpected surprise on the wedding day morning). The catch? Your bouquet will be made of artificial flowers.

According to Kinney, the idea came to her after she relyed on faux flowers in her own wedding. “When I was planning my own wedding, I met with numerous fresh florists, but quickly learned my floral-vision was quite expensive,” she explains on her website. “My mom suggested that we explore faux blooms as an alternative so that I wouldn’t have to compromise my dream look.” After being hesitant at first, she went ALL in.

According to Kinney, family and friends at her wedding had zero idea poser-blooms were surrounding them when she said her vows. Now she makes faux bouquets to other people, providing high-quality artificial flowers that look uncannily organic. Below you’ll find some examples:

This past decade has seen a revival in the art of embroidery. No longer a pastime reserved to nannies, embroidery is now where the cool kids are at. But if embroidery is cool than Olga Prinku’s flower embroideries are next-level cool.

Relying on her own special technique (which she now teaches in designated workshops), Prinku arranges dried flowers on tulle – the flowers providing an apt replacement for a needle and thread. While some flowers she dries herself, others she buys dried. She also forages for seed pods at the end of the season and picks them when they are dry already.

According to Prinku, some flowers are better than others for particular purposes. For floral embroidery hoops, for example, she looks for dry small poppies or flowers with thin stalks and no particularly big heads. Whereas for wreaths, she likes to use things like eucalyptus and olive, as well as hydrangeas and peonies.

“A lot of my ideas come from going for walks in the countryside near where I live, or things I grow in the garden,” she shared with The Italian Rêve, noting her sources of inspiration. “I love working with the seasons, so whatever is in season is my favorite at that moment!”

With spring just outside our reach, her embroidered pieces provide the perfect substitute. Take a look for yourself:

Charlotte Jade’s illustration style can be summarized in two words: nature and patterns. Her designs, all hand-drawn, are printed on wallpapers, textiles, and stationery, inviting the natural world inside. By celebrating the shapes, forms, textures, colors, and (of course) patterns, that are prevalent in our natural environment, Jade aims to restore our connection with nature.

Her work is mainly inspired by nature, and plants, foliage, flowers, and animals are all to be expected. But Jade is also a fashion enthusiast and keeps up to date with current fashion trends. As such, her work is has a stylish edge to it, that isn’t meant for the faint of heart.

Founded in 2015, her brand features luxury design collections available on wallpaper, textiles, upholstery fabrics, furniture, cushions, ceramic tiles, and flooring, with all products printed and made in the UK.

According to Jade, she enjoys the combination of hand drawings with digital design. “My work is quite detailed and I generally use a pencil to create my patterns,” she told Jung Katz, “however, I do enjoy combining pencil and paint, as I feel these two mediums create quite unique pattern designs.”

Take a look at some of her more striking designs.

According to paper artist, Emily Paluska, flowers are a sort of natural glue that keeps us connected to where we came from and where we’re going. An admirer of flower gardens, Paluska invites nature inside through her handcrafted paper bouquets.

“Some of the best gardens I’ve ever seen are in Capitol Hill,” she relayed in an interview with Ballpitmag. “I also have easy access to the National Botanic Garden, the Arboretum and I have family in Pennsylvania where I can go to Longwood Gardens a few times a year. Seeing a flower in real life is what triggers my creativity and desire to recreate it in paper.”

It’s this desire which first sparked her interest in paper art. A self-taught artist through and through, it was mere chance that introduced her to her craft. “I had seen paper flowers sporadically online and thought it might be a fun thing to try,” explained Paluska on her website. “I had no idea what I was doing but I sat on the floor of my bedroom watching videos and looking at pictures of plants, learning as I went.”

“After being a lifetime appreciator of the arts, I never considered myself an artist,” she admitted. “I used to think an artist was only someone that could paint or draw. I know now that couldn’t be farther from the truth. The creative world is vast and there is room for everyone.”

Scrolling through her paper gardens might just inspire you to grab a pair of scissors and get to work!

Amongst the things that make illustrator Camille Shu tick are plants and the things they do (or make). “I’m in complete awe of the things that grow around us,” she gushed in an interview with Ballpitmag. “Fruit, flowers, trees, all of it. Something simple like opening a blood orange from the store is a religious experience for me and makes me want to immediately get painting.”

Being a florist, as well as working part-time on a farm, means that Shu knows what she’s talking about. Her artwork is a way of combining her love for nature (particularly flowers and fruit) with her love of illustrating. These illustrations can be seen in murals, commercial, and editorial work.

Describing her aesthetic as “colorful and funky,” Shu likes to paint realistic scenes, to which she enjoys adding abstract shapes and colors. Using mainly Gouache, she hopes to bring more color into people’s lives through her art, as well as help people appreciate the world around us.

Her artwork – bright, joyous, and appetizing – is shared on her Instagram page. Take a look why don’t ya?

Nature has often been the subject of human interest when we talk about art, and flowers and floral designs are some of the most common things we use for decoration. Because of their captivating look, artists have always enjoyed painting and photographing natural elements, and they will always do.

In order to preserve flowers, people sometimes dry them or create herbariums. But there’s another thing you can do to make a flower last: freeze it, and it will keep its original fresh look.

Two artists from Cape Town, commercial photographer Bruce Boyd, and artist Tharien Smith, collaborated on a project that includes creating and photographing frozen flowers, called “0˚C”. The collaboration began four years ago when Boyd was looking for a new and original way to capture flowers. He discovered Japanese artist Makoto Azuma, whose work inspired him and Smith to experiment with frozen flowers, and it was a hit!

The prints are for sale on their website and the design looks amazing. Ice gives images a bit of a white reflection, which looks mesmerizing over flowers in gentle colors such as bright pink or blue and makes them appear as if painted. Here are some samples of their work that we figured you’d like. Enjoy!

Grace Ciao is a fashion illustrator based in Singapore. She loves to combines fashion with art and draws inspiration from the beauty she finds in nature.

Using paints and flowers, she creates sophisticated hand-drawn gowns, showcasing the soft and delicate beauty of petals. Her designs have been sought after by the world’s leading brands such as Chanel, Dior, Fendi, Elie Saab and Jaeger-LeCoultre.

The idea of using flowers came about when she caught a wilted rose at her desk while she was drawing. Despite its withered look, it still looked beautiful and she decided to “immortalize its elegance and beauty.” She immediately added the petals to her fashion illustration she was working on.

Since then, flowers have been an essential medium in her art and Ciao hopes to capture their delicate beauty. “Imagine the soft and impermanent flower petals adding to a flowing form of a dress, their delicacy and exquisiteness mimicking those of a delicate fabric,” she wrote on her website.
