Getting kids to have a balanced diet is always a challenge. They shun most types of food, especially veggies, and if it were up to them, they would have candy for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.

Food artist Sarah Lescrauwaet-Beach came up with an amazing way to add more variety to her kids’ meals and make them excited about it; she started creating edible food art for kids. Lescrauwaet-Beach is regularly sharing her creations on Instagram, hoping to inspire other parents and give them ideas for food art they can create themselves.

Lescrauwaet-Beach mainly uses fruit, veggies, seeds, and nuts for her food art. She arranges them to create depictions of all sorts of cool characters, ranging from characters from Disney animated movies to cute animals. This way, every meal or snack turns into a visual adventure for her kids.

The “36 days of type” is an annual project that challenges designers, illustrators, and artists to offer their interpretation of the alphabet. Each year there are thousands of participants, with each of them offering their unique vision of the letters and numbers we use in everyday life. One of the most intriguing entries in this year’s challenge was Ben Chelouche’s food alphabet.

Chelouche decided to base his designs entirely around food, with each letter of the alphabet being styled as a food item that starts with that particular letter. For example, the letter “P” was shown as a pepperoni pizza slice, the letter “K” as a Kit-Kat bar, and the letter “G” as a mouth-watering bunch of grilled cheese.

Chelouche, who is a self-described “food lover,” revealed that he took part in the challenge in order to sharpen his skills and to have some fun in the process.

“Everything created on my page is personal work for my own growth, development of skills, and of course for fun,” the California-based artist explained.

You can check out some of our favorite Chelouche’s food letters below. But be vary, as each letter will probably cause some major cravings.

Dennis Prescott understands the very essence of cooking. A celebrated Canadian chef and cookbook author, his practice is based on making people happy with food that inspires joy at the table. Prescott’s uplifting and joyful spirit towards food also comes across his popular Instagram page, which has so far accumulated some 600k followers (and counting!).

Naturally, it took Prescott time and work to achieve a level of freedom and joy in the kitchen. “Deliciousness requires risk,” he relayed once in an interview with Medium. “Taking risks guarantees failure while on the road to success,” he noted.

Prescott knows what he’s talking about. A once struggling musician living in Nashville, TN, he learned how to cook by working his way through several Jamie Oliver cookbooks. He soon realized that food, rather than music, was his actual passion and he threw himself into not just creating delicious recipes. Working alongside chefs in various restaurants, lead him to travel the world as a chef and ultimately become the master he is today.

“Mastery takes years,” stresses the chef. “The best chefs in the world are the best because they’ve put in years and years of work to get to a place where something comes naturally to them like second nature. And they still fail often, because they’re constantly pushing their own creativity in the kitchen.”

Alongside the actual cooking, Prescott’s success is also owed to his online presence. His Instagram account is full of photos of mouth-watering food and eclectic recipes that will inspire you, at the very least, to order some takeout. “When I started, I naively thought all I’d have to focus on was food,” he says. “Wrong. Should you aspire to the best chef you can be? Absolutely! That said, I spend much more time working on account receivables and in meetings than I do in the kitchen.”

His advice to other aspiring cooks? “There is no special pill or secret hack to success. Just put your head down, work hard and put in the time. In the end, the risk will pay off.”

When it comes to authentic Italian cooking, Enrica Rocca is the real deal. Born and raised in Venice, she’s a pro in Venetian cuisine and teaches her many students and followers the ins and outs of making the ultimate Italian meal.

“Learning authentic Venetian cookery is more about finding the best regional ingredients than knowing how to fry a fish,” remarked The New York Times in an article dedicated to Rocca. Having Italian food in her blood and a contagious zest for life, Rocca’s teachings are thorough, without being overly serious.

Having graduated from the Hotel School of Lausanne, Rocca brought up her two daughters and ran two Italian restaurants in Cape Town for 11 years, before making a move to London in 2002. In London, she opened her first Italian cookery school, which her two daughters have run since 2014. As for Rocca, she is now back in Venice, where she runs a second branch of the cookery school.

Her classes—full of zest and enthusiasm—begin with shopping tips at Venice’s Rialto fish and produce market and end with a jolly cooking tutorial in Rocca’s home.

“A cuisine is built around the local ingredients so exporting a culinary culture is really difficult,” explained the chef in an interview with Suitcase Magazine. “You can’t access the same ingredients, not everything can be exported and compromises are not always successful.”

“I never eat in Italian restaurants outside of Italy as I enjoy discovering the local specialties,” she admits. “I also know how difficult it is to replicate any cuisine outside of its original country.” Her dishes always comprise just two or three ingredients, chosen well, cooked simply and brought to the table with gusto.

We dream of taking her cookery classes in Venice’s Dorsoduro district, just across the Grand Canal from San Marco. But for the time being, we’ll have to make do with her online courses.

Nicole Cogan’s motto is worth adhering to. “Just because your life has to be affected,” says the founder of Nobread.com, a food and wellness blog, “doesn’t mean your lifestyle has to be.” Cogan knows what she’s talking about. After being diagnosed with gluten allergy when she was 19, she made adjustments to both her life and her menu.

“When I first started NoBread my goal was to find gluten-free options in restaurants and in stores, and to make the gluten-free experience easier for those who had to follow the diet,” she explained in an interview with Sweety High. But exploring gluten-free options for Celiac patients was one thing. Cogan actually took it upon herself to change the way restaurants catered to customers with gluten allergies and other dietary restrictions by outlining their gluten-free options and accommodations.

With a massive following online, these days her website-turned-brand offers a guide to the best gluten-free dishes around the world, delicious recipes, as well as Cogan’s favorite wellness tips and tricks. “In a society and culture that’s all about extreme diets and fads, using the word plant-based feels less intense,” she explains. “It endorses the vegan lifestyle, but in a flexible way.”

According to Cogan, to excel in wellness means you’re living your true, authentic life. “True wellness also means living in balance,” she stressed. “It’s allowing yourself to live and indulge, while also maintaining overall wellness philosophies and goals.”

Indeed, Cogan’s philospohy and lifestyle can be adopted by all eaters alike. Her recipes can be made by anyone, anywhere, and anytime and her travel blogs are meant to show that you can still travel the world with your allergy. “I hope to inspire people to live their best lives, despite whatever challenges they may face!” she says. “And I try to make it look fun—and delicious—along the way.”

Popular blogposts include Traveling Essentials, The Right Questions to Ask While Dining Out, Cogan’s Go-To Meals and Snack Brands, and Fitness and Workout Plans.

You might not have heard of her, but Michaela Vais (aka ElaVegan) is kind of a big deal within the vegan community. A food stylist, recipe creator, and author, Vais has amassed a gigantic following online, with more than one million fans on Instagram alone.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CLKlZVEhA_w/

Her rise to fame was fairly quick, having started her Instagram page in June 2015 and accompanying blog by December 2016. “Being creative in the kitchen and eating healthy vegan food is my passion,” she writes on her blog.

Being creative also means experimenting in the kitchen. “I must say that I love to experiment in the kitchen and I guess that I am an intuitive cook,” she shared in an interview with Spoon University.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CKezX__BAmY/

According to Vais, before becoming a food blogger, she was actually making homemade cosmetics and soaps. “Sometimes a recipe failed but most of them turned out amazing and many soaps were really beautiful,” she notes.

“One day my friend (who also made soaps) sent me photos of her homemade bread and other dishes. I sent her photos of my food creations and I think that was the time when I started taking photos of my food.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CMQG7uNBMQ-/

But while she turned to cooking as a full time gig later in life, her vegan lifestyle was adopted early on. How early? According to Vais, she stopped eating meat altogether when she was only six years old and became fully vegan in September 2011. Vais describes her choice to go vegan as the best decision in her life, not only for moral reasons but also for health reasons.

“I want to spread the vegan message and inspire people from all around the world with my vegan recipes,” she says. “Eating plants is not a sacrifice, it’s a pleasure and a conscious choice to honor your body, mind, and soul”. If you’re contemplating veganism, her blog and Instagram page are a good place to start.

This past year has been a challenge, no doubt about it. During the pandemic, there have been few zero-risk activities. Two things we missed profoundly were eating out and traveling. Now, as we slowly test the waters, we can finally look forward to that next well-deserved vacation.

We might as well “hire” food and travel bloggers Mark And Elizabeth Rudd as our guides. The two have founded the brand and blog Compass & Fork where they share their travel tips and dining experiences with a growing audience (so far, on Instagram alone they have well over 14,000 followers).

Together, the avid travelers have visited over 50 countries over a period of 40 years, worked in about ten, and still have a wish list of places they’ve yet to visit.

“We both traveled extensively for work in our corporate roles as well,” the couple shared in a chat with Travel Awaits. “After the kids were older, we decided it was time to travel more and see some of those places we had always dreamed of visiting.”

Fans of slow traveling, they explore each destination in depth. This means for a minimum of a month they update their site with content and posts about the same country.

“We tend to be independent, active travelers,” they note. “Our travel style is affordable luxury. You won’t find hostels or budget travel, but you’ll find great value, unique accommodation, and experiences.”

Their website includes resources like recipes, health tips, and travel guides, with helpful posts including How to Save Money on Your Trip To Vietnam and How to Find the Best Local Experiences in Latin America. We can’t wait to pack our suitcases, prepare our napkins, and hit the road!

This past year, social media has been awash in people sharing their new—or rediscovered—hobbies during the pandemic. With most of us stuck at home, one particular hobby has been on the rise: baking. Because let’s face it, you can always trust your kitchen to comfort you in times of need.

But while cooking is usually fairly intuitive, baking is a whole other ballpark. And if you’re new to this hobby, you might need a helping hand. Here to help you out is pastry chef Ravneet Gill. According to Gill, literally everyone can bake.

While some people take to baking immediately, says Gill, others decide on a different, more technical approach: “The internet is full of resources to the point where you can troubleshoot any issue you may have,” shared the pastry chef in an interview with Whistles. “It’s obvious to say but practicing technique and always tasting your food will get you there.”

According to Gill, if you want to take the plunge and become a chef, spend a week or two in a kitchen you admire to get a feel for it. If nothing, her latest book, The Pastry Chef’s Guide: The secret to successful baking every time, might just convince you. The book includes the core principles of patisserie—anything from ingredients to lining your tins.

“It’s written in a way that will help you to understand the principles that underpin pastry and show you that… it’s just not that hard,” explained Gill in one Instagram post. “In it, you’ll find lots of base recipes for you to use as staples and theory on how to elevate them and make them your own.”

Roll up your sleeves!

The history of the chocolate chip cookie is well documented in American history books. Originating in the United States at around 1938, it all started when American chef Ruth Graves Wakefield chopped up a Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar and added the chopped chocolate to a cookie recipe.

These days, it’s hard to imagine life without this celebrated cookie (indeed, it’s hard to think of a glass of milk without its glorious sidekick or better half). Recipes for this delightful treat are now outrageously sweet and even more outrageously crisp. But finding just the perfect cookie can be tough.

Most recently, we’ve come across Melissa Stadler’s cookie chip recipe. Though the recipe itself was uploaded quite some time ago, it pops up once and again in food blogs and Instagram, crowned as the Famous Levain Bakery Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe.

“These aren’t some ordinary bite-size cookies,” writes Stadler on her website. “No, these are a full-on meal. Well maybe for some people.” The trick, says Stadler, is in their size. “Here’s the deal—you make them big. Really big. Like only four can fit on a cookie sheet, BIG. These are the BEST CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES EVER. Yep, I said it.”

A two-time Pillsbury Bake-Off finalist, Stadler knows what she’s talking about. Her food blog and accompanying Instagram page are filled with quick and easy dinners, healthy recipes, and mouthwatering desserts. But you’ll definitely want to start with the cookies.

While we slowly adjust to a new normal and test the waters of life-after-Covid, the future of travel is still shrouded in mist. Until traveling is permitted and safe, we might as well explore the world through our kitchens.

This week we bring you Hetty Lui McKinnon’s cookbook To Asia, With Love, a great introduction to Asian cuisine. Born in Australia to a Chinese family, and currently based in Brooklyn, New York City, McKinnon describes her book as “a deeply personal and emotional deep dive into food as a gateway to discovering cultural identity.”

“This is my love letter to all the Asian food that I crave everyday,” wrote McKinnon on a post on Instagram. “Some of the recipes are inspired by the Chinese food I ate growing up, but mostly it is a modern interpretation of my fave Asian flavors.”

Recipes range from the traditional—salt and pepper eggplant, red curry laksa, pea, and ginger fried rice—to uniquely modern interpretations, such as buttery miso vegemite noodles, stir-fried salt, and vinegar potatoes, cacio e pepe udon noodles, and grilled wombok caesar salad with wonton crackers.

According to McKinnon, the Chinese recipes she shares in her book are all, in one way or another, inspired by her mother’s food. Just scrolling through her Instagram page will make your mouth water!

Purchase the book here and follow her on Instagram for some cooking inspiration and quick recipes.
