]]>With thousands of followers on Instagram, Queso is slowly but surely taking over Petstagram. But his start wasn’t as easy. According to his owner, Sarah McVey, when Queso was a young pup, he lived in an Alabama shelter until there was a flood and he got lost. Thankfully, The Almost Home Foundation brought Queso and other dogs to Chicago to find forever homes.
“We first met at a foster’s home who was watching Queso while he was up for adoption,” recalled McVey in a chat with Swooft. “He had rashes on his belly, kennel cough, and an ear infection, but he was still smiling and happy to see us!”. As it turns out—it was love at first sight.
Making the case for “adopt—don’t shop”, these days, Queso is living it up. A celebrity in the making, he has even strutted on the pink carpet to raise money for One Tail at a Time. “Queso is great at posing (if treats are involved) so it doesn’t take too long to get a good picture,” says his owner. “I like to consider the timing of the post and if there’s a good holiday or trending topic to partake in, but for the most part it’s all about his normal life and activities.”
But McVey still admits it’s hard for her to wrap her head around her pet’s celebrity status. “Queso was recognized at the airport by a stranger and it was the most exciting day ever!” she exclaimed. Show him some love on Instagram:

]]>A former shelter cat, Nala’s rise to fame is quite remarkable: “The story of one kitten, Nala, starts off at a home where the owners could no longer take care of the cats and kittens because there were too many,” explained her owner Varisiri (Pookie) Methachittiphan on Nala’s personal website.
“Nala was then taken away to the shelter where she was separated from her original family. Sadly we don’t know what happened to the rest of the cats or kittens, but when adopted, Nala was the only one left.”
According to her cat mum, it was love at first sight… or rather, at first lick. “She licked my face and knew she was the one that we were going to take home”, writes Methachittiphan.
“I went to my friend’s cousin’s house and we just wanted to go see some animals at the animal shelter and so I just went there without thinking that I was going to adopt a cat that day. Then, I saw her and I just couldn’t leave her, I had to take her home. She was around five months old at the time.”
These days, amongst her accolades, Nala has won Tik Toker of the Year at the 11th annual Shorty Awards, which also saw her be interviewed by Oprah Winfrey herself. Quite a change from her humble beginnings.
Her fame also came by surprise to her owner. “At the time Instagram had just started, so my sister said that I should start an account for Nala so that I could share her photo with everyone because she looks so cute with her big blue eyes,” she recalled. “I just started Instagram without actually thinking that she was going to be so famous.”
While she hoped to reach some 500 followers, people certainly took notice of her unique features. You’d want to join the hype!

]]>Adopted in 2010 at a Farmers Market in LA when he was a four-month-old puppy, Tuna’s owner, Courtney Dasher, admits she never thought of her pup as a celebrity in the making. But only two years later, he skyrocketed to fame after Instagram featured a picture of him on their personal page.
“This unconventional-looking dog is being used to bring joy and make people happy,” Dasher shared in an interview with Vice. As it turns out, Tuna also helps others overcome their fears. “One woman showed up to a book signing who had agoraphobia—she hadn’t left her house in years,” Dasher recalled. “This woman got over her fear, just to meet Tuna!”
Making the case for adopt-don’t-shop, Tuna also lends a helping paw to others in need. Most recently he appeared in an Essential Edition calendar, honoring Essential/Key workers. According to his owner, a dollar of every sale, plus a portion of proceeds, went towards benefiting multiple rescue organizations.

]]>Rescued in November of 2018, he is an 80 pound American Staffordshire Terrier and Red Heeler mix, which is where his huge ears and gorgeous red coat come from. Specializes in napping all day, burping, and farting simultaneously, his Instagram page will surely put a smile on your face.
“At first my family was very hesitant to let me take him,” admitted Bella, Baloo’s mom in an interview with helloBARK!. “Rescuing a dog was one thing, but rescuing an ‘aggressive breed’ was a whole other story. Thankfully, Baloo ended up being an incredibly socialized and intelligent dog. I was so lucky to have found my perfect dog and soulmate at a shelter right down the road!”
According to Bella, apart from being adorably goofy, Baloo is also incredibly intelligent. “He’s an incredibly balanced dog who was very well socialized before I got him,” says Bella. “He’s great with dogs, cats, and animals of all sizes. He’s protective of me, but when directed, he accepts strangers and new people calmly. He’s very well trained and it’s been a blast working with him.”
And while Baloo is her first rescue, it certainly won’t be her last. Bella says she wants to continue helping rescue dogs as well as advocate for bully breeds until she no longer can. “Rescuing a dog can be one of the hardest, but most rewarding things you can ever do with your life,” she says. “Make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons– dogs aren’t a toy, or a short term accessory, but a 10-15 year commitment that will require your full attention, love, and patience. Rescue dogs are so forgiving and loving, but can also be fragile. Be patient with them, and make sure they know you’re there to help them.”

According to Ana, dachshunds make for a wonderful pet, as the breed is known to being very loving and good with young children. “Once the family wakes up, Winston comes to us and asks to come to the bed to snooze some more (he doesn’t like to sleep on the bed in the night though, go figure),” she relays.
“After he is done with his morning beauty sleep, he has his breakfast and we go for a walk in the park,” she goes on to say. “The rest of the day is: siesta after the walk, wake, play, have dinner, do commands training with food from the family dinner, play some more, a quick walk around the block and signing off for the day.”
A life filled with naps and treats is something we can all aspire to.

It was wonderful to see how caring he was with this tiny baby, and over the years their bond has gotten stronger and stronger.”
“If Einstein could only do one thing for the rest of his life, it would be sitting in my lap kissing my face,” he added, fondly. “He is loyal almost to a fault, and attached to my heels wherever we go.”
Being a rescue dog is also an important part of Einstein’s identity. “I was ready for a small dog, and was visiting shelters almost every day to find one that was a good fit,” he recalled. “One morning, I walked into a shelter and Einstein had been rescued the night before – there he was, staring up at me. I saw that he was a Havanese and I instantly knew he was my dog.”

But of course, it was his white mustache which first caught their attention. Nicknamed “Mustache Tornado,” his hyperactive personality means there’s never a shortage of chaos around the house. According to Sabrine, Gringo can stand on his back paws, just like a meerkat. “He can stay a couple of minutes in that position, and it’s hilarious,” she says.
He’s also a huge fan of anything food-related. “Gringo always sniffs our plates to see if there’s something good for him to eat, and he likes to steal our sponge from the kitchen just to chew it, so we have to hide it every time,” says his owner.

Now, with more than 120k followers on Instagram Merlin is living it up. The Greens (both of whom are visual artists) manage his Instagram, where they share the ins and outs of his day to day.
But life wasn’t always easy for the adorable kitty. Placed for adoption at the Lynchburg Humane Society, his owners first fell in love with him after visiting a “Free Cat Friday” event. “The lady who had shown us around eventually noticed us indecisively meandering,” Elliot Green recalled. “She stopped to tell us that she had a favorite, but that he had some issues and was sick. She took us to the medical wing to show us this tiny kitten who was recovering from a head cold.”
“As a full-time student also working two jobs, I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to provide Merlin with the attention he needed,” he explained. But then he held him to his arms. “As soon as I got to hold him, I think it was pretty obvious that he was perfect,” he says.
