Zoe Wodarz’s playful illustrations will provide the visual healing you need in your feed. Known for her colorful approach to illustration, her work often features recurring shapes and patterns, making for a hypnotic, if soothing, effect.

“What I love about art is that it is never standing still,” reflected Wodarz in an interview with The BoomBoom Prints blog, “my peers tell me I now have a slight signature style to my work but really I love to produce art and product design on demand. It is a special challenge to not rely on a medium or style for your inspiration but to let the world around you dictate the trends!”

Based in Minnesota, Wodarz had developed her style over time, and through trial and error. Her creative journey took her through different stops: being a studio artist first, then merchandiser, and lastly a home decor gift-ware product designer. Over the last five years, she has combined her digital skills and fine arts background into a thriving design career.

“I did go to school for Studio Art / Environmental Studies, I also took a Contemporary Art focused semester in NYC and numerous studio classes which shaped my education,” she explains, adding that she is completely self-taught when it comes to graphic design and digital illustration. “I love to combine different media to create new techniques and stretch my skills!” she exclaims.

Jess Phoenix’s illustrations can be boiled down to two ingredients: flowers and color. As such, her Instagram page provides a sort of haven in times of quarantine. Sold as embellished art prints (with splashes of gold and neon paint), her illustrations are also featured on stationery, book covers, and embroidery, adding up to a vibrant universe where it is always springtime.

“True creativity is like an itch that you LOVE to scratch using your curiosity,” observed Phoenix in an interview with Papirmass. “You can just keep scratching it; it never gets old!” According to Phoenix, she feels that exact itch when it comes to color. “I’m curious about color, which makes me want to explore it and ‘get creative’ with it,” she says.

Color, more than flowers or nature in general, was what pushed Phoenix’s creative practice. “My work emerged from a desire to produce art as bright and as vibrant as I wanted,” she explains. “I love my day job, but sometimes I’m told to change my colors so they ‘don’t vibrate so much.’ I WANT my art to vibrate!”

A creative spirit, she notes that creativity is contagious and is well within our reach. “Everyone has something they’re curious about, so I think everyone has that innate potential to explore that curiosity and in turn, be creative,” says Phoenix. Words to live by!

With so much going on, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Here at TettyBetty, we’re doing our best to provide a soft, comfortable corner on the internet, and help you find inner peace, if nothing else. Lately, we’ve taken comfort in the illustrations of Katie Wilson. Focused on the joyful, sweet, and cozy things in life, her work features themes like flowers, pets, and home, reminding us of the small comforts in life.

“There is an underlying environmental message to my work,” explained the New Zealand-based illustrator in an interview with AWW Magazine. “I want people to see the beauty of the things we share this planet with – the animals, the plants and insects and through this hopefully care for them more.”

“I’ve always loved animals and have always either had dogs or cats or horses or chickens in my life,” she further relayed. “I try to simplify the shapes and textures of the animal whilst still keeping it recognizable. I also try to show its personality through facial features and gestures.”

With her home studio based in an old railway house in a small town in Coastal Otago, Wilson’s illustrations could be seen as an extension of her environment. Indeed, inspiration comes easy for Wilson and is found in her garden or the surrounding countryside. But even if you live in the city, her illustrated observations are sure to strike a chord.

For some, making art is more of a calling than a decision. For Dinara Mirtalipova, the realization she needed to paint came as a sort of epiphany. “Only after I grew up and graduated from the field of computer science, I realized I couldn’t stop painting,” she shared with the Sak.

And much to her surprise, other people took notice of her work. “To my surprise, I began receiving commissions to draw and design for people and companies,” she says. “And after my client list grew I decided it was time to concentrate on art professionally.”

Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, she’s now based in Ohio, but her paintings still echo her cultural landscapes. Known for her distinct folky patterns, her illustrations feature details like flowers, animals, and hand lettering found in Uzbek and Russian folklore.

“Art communicates emotions,” says Mirtalipova, “it can tell stories and paint a mood. I feel my art has a sense of nostalgia, it’s folkloric and musical. When I paint my stories, I like them to communicate positive energy, to be bright and colorful, to bring joy and to spread joy.” Her art, as it turns out also communicates personal memories and collective folklore. There’s beauty to be found in Krista Perry’s illustrations. There are also a lot of patterns. Based in Boston, Ma, Perry’s life philosophy is to have fun – a worthy goal, especially when times are as bad as they seem these days.

According to Perry, it was while studying for her BFA in illustration, that she took “a very serious oath” to make something fun every day. This overall cheerfulness comes across in both the subjects she tackles and her creative process.

“When I start working on illustration stuff it’s usually pretty easy for me to get lost in it,” she admitted in an interview with Red Cap Cards. “I like to pick out a favorite record or find something to listen to like a documentary or podcast to get started.”

“My very favorite part of the process is working on the small details of the painting,” she adds. “I like to see how realistically I can render things. It has always been a super fun challenge for me.” Her patterns and color choices are greatly inspired by the ’60s and ’70s, calling to mind vintage ephemera and packaging.

The work itself is made using mainly Gelly Roll gel pens, POSCA paint markers, Tombow dual tip markers, metal mechanical pencils, and gouache. “I usually prefer to paint with HOLBEIN ACRYLA GOUACHE.” says Perry. “They have THE BEST COLORS! They’re so yummy and beautiful! Sometimes, I like to practice with traditional gouaches (the kind that reactivates when water is added). They each provide their own special qualities that I get way too excited about.”

Charlotte Jade’s illustration style can be summarized in two words: nature and patterns. Her designs, all hand-drawn, are printed on wallpapers, textiles, and stationery, inviting the natural world inside. By celebrating the shapes, forms, textures, colors, and (of course) patterns, that are prevalent in our natural environment, Jade aims to restore our connection with nature.

Her work is mainly inspired by nature, and plants, foliage, flowers, and animals are all to be expected. But Jade is also a fashion enthusiast and keeps up to date with current fashion trends. As such, her work is has a stylish edge to it, that isn’t meant for the faint of heart.

Founded in 2015, her brand features luxury design collections available on wallpaper, textiles, upholstery fabrics, furniture, cushions, ceramic tiles, and flooring, with all products printed and made in the UK.

According to Jade, she enjoys the combination of hand drawings with digital design. “My work is quite detailed and I generally use a pencil to create my patterns,” she told Jung Katz, “however, I do enjoy combining pencil and paint, as I feel these two mediums create quite unique pattern designs.”

Take a look at some of her more striking designs.

Caro Arevalo’s art is meant to be experienced. Consisting of repeating shapes that are arranged in symmetrical patterns, it makes for a meditative, sometimes hypnotic, space. With an emphasis on repetition and interconnection, her patterns are made by tiny dots – micro-expressions of existence which, together, form macro worlds.

Born in Peru and currently based in Brooklyn NY, Arevalo draws inspiration from what she calls her “Amazonian heritage.”

“I embrace the importance of rituals and ancestral wisdom as they taught me that by observing nature we notice that there is no real separateness in-between beings and that the whole universe is connected,” she explained in an interview with the DUFMOD blog. “These are the building blocks of my artwork.”

Her art is very much influenced by her state of mind.”I love being able to focus on paintings that resemble the current theme I am obsessed about, and not having to follow other people’s agendas,” she says. “The worst part is I am still learning how to stop working, as nature is what inspires me I sometimes feel a necessity to paint all the time, but I have found that stopping to just rest or gaze is so helpful too.”

You can follow her inspiring, meditative, process on her Instagram and YouTube pages.

After 10 years of working as an illustrator, Heather Moore needed a change of pace. With a passion for patterns, she decided to experiment in her studio, designing clean patterns, then screenprinting them onto fabric.

“I started blogging about my work, and opened an online shop on Etsy,” she recalled in an interview with You Are Brave. “People around the world started reading my blog and buying my things, and I got some wholesale orders to the USA, and suddenly I found that I was a designer with a design business.”

What started as a creative experiment of sorts quickly took off, and nowadays Moor has her own store in Cape Town, South Africa (Skinny laMinx), where she sells anything from cushions and tea towels to table runners, all decked out with her vibrant patterns. “The Skinny laMinx recipe is simple,” reads her website, “Mix together a love of pattern, a cute shop, a top-notch team, and top it all off with equal parts playful and chic.”

Her inspiration is varied and comes from everyday things like cactuses, teacups, staircases, and vibracrete walls. “I usually have a notebook with me, where I make sketches, and I take a lot of photographs of textures, details, juxtapositions, and compositions that seem to give me ideas,” says Moore.

Emily Isabella’s pattern-driven illustrations lean on her background in textile. Trained originally as a textile designer, she likes using gouache for her illustrations – a color also used in textile design as it dries flat and mimics screen printing.

“It wasn’t a deliberate choice,” she admitted in an interview with Ballpitmag, “however, I love exploring the relationship between line and flat color and gouache is the perfect medium for this. Also, it dries almost immediately so it’s great when you’re working on a deadline!”

Based in the Hudson Valley, just north of NYC, her drawings and gouache paintings have been applied to products like books, bedding, clothing, furniture, fabric, dishes, rugs, toys, and wallpaper; with clients that include Kate Spade, Anthropologie, and Flow Magazine.

Reflecting on her artistic background she recalls her childhood as pretty idyllic, with her parents being both artists and encouraging her to be creative and embrace nature. That creativity and love of nature carried well into adulthood. “I met my husband in art school and from the beginning, we’ve dreamed of building a place to house our creative endeavors,” she says. “We now live in the Hudson Valley on 15 acres and are building that studio! I guess my adult life mimics my childhood.”

“I feel very connected to my memories of childhood and I’m always interested in bridging the gap between childhood and adulthood,” she adds. Scrolling through her many patterns and illustrations might help in bridging that gap:

Print and pattern designer Elizabeth Olwen makes illustrated patterns that are floral or nature-based – a celebration of the strange and beautiful world we live in. Born in Canada and based in Portugal, she is constantly inspired by the natural world around her, from the beautiful forests of Ontario to the pastel colors and tiles of Lisbon to her cherished and plentiful travels abroad.

Her patterns and illustrations (assembled piece by piece) adorn all sorts of different products, anything from bedding, rugs, and pillows to aprons, floor tiles, and stationery. “That’s one of the things I love most about what I do,” she told Ballpit Magazine. “I never know what new kind of product collaboration is around the corner.”

Describing her wors as “fresh, whimsical, organic yet graphic, graceful and modern, with a nod to days gone by”, she adds that: “Sometimes my work is incredibly minimal and simple, other times, quite complex. I like to bury little hidden treasures in my work, little details that you only notice when you’ve taken time to really look at them.”

But whatever the level of detail, the finished product is always delightfully pleasing. “Art has the potential to really move people, and therefore, I find art is full of hope,” says Olwen. “And on a far more superficial level, art just brings beauty to the everyday… and I feel we need that now more than ever.” PREACH!
