Artist Mike Willcox creates mystical and surreal art that reminds us of the art deco style a lot. Willcox is inspired by “existing, healing, growing, love, romance, wind, storms, history, plants, life—all kinds of things,” as he told It’s Nice That.

From that, he built a rich portfolio of illustrations, graphic novels, tapestries, and even tarot decks—all things that can carry symbolic meaning.

He’s not always sure how the painting will come up until he finishes it: “I’ll have a vague idea of color and a small piece of a figure I can’t quite make out stuck in my head, and I’ll have to make it,” he says.

There’s something about certain artists that gives them the confidence to just barrel into a production and not necessarily knowing what’s going to happen, and yet having the confidence that it’s going to turn out well.

Such is certainly the case with Willcox and his work. Sometimes, the inspiration comes to him in dreams or during meditation sessions.

If you want to see more art by this interesting artist, follow him on Instagram, where he has around 230,000 followers already.

Julian Frost is a New Zealand-based artist who specializes in animation and illustrations. You might know him for his super entertaining mobile Dumb Ways to Die, on which he served as a director.

Frost is engaged in lots of other projects, including creating kids’ books, but the part of his creative output that we really enjoy are the simple animations he shares on social media.

The artist’s Instagram profile is full of short clips that are created in a simple manner but are so captivating that you can’t take your eyes off them.

For example, one of his animations shows a human-like figure dancing between flying swords. And as many times you see the loop, you are impressed with the elegance of the figure and its ability to avoid the sharp edges.

Another animation shows the amazing versatility of a banana. For example, it can be used as a seesaw, skateboard, bike wheel, and much more.

According to Frost, he approaches his animated videos, which he calls “idiotic zen poetry,” similarly to the way comedians approach one-liner jokes. He believes they are crafted in a way that every line fits perfectly together, and removing just one would ruin the entire joke.

The ’90s was a great era for many kids. The music and the movies were amazing, the toys were cool, the internet was just beginning to take over, and the video game revolution was in full swing.

Inspired by these great times, Belgian artist Bert Musketon recently decided to start an art series in which he illustrated random objects from the era. Musketon set himself a challenge to make 29 illustrations in 29 days, and the results are awesome.

Among his works are all those objects that you liked growing up if you were a kid in the ’90s. The list includes a Nintendo Game Boy, an old school Casio watch, a Playstation 1 console, a VHS tape, a mobile phone with an antenna, and much more.

According to Musketon, all of these illustrations have been created using Adobe Illustrator.

“I drew one object every single day for 29 days straight,” he explains. “On average it took me 4 hours per drawing counting up to an average total of 116 hours to create all these artworks.”

This hard work really paid off, as the illustrations proved to be quite a hit among his social media followers. Check out more of them below.

Han Yuming choose art as his career and moved from Jinan to Shanghai to learn illustration. When creating his illustrations, the freelance artist uses only Photoshop, AI, and Wacom to finish his work. He has been working digitally for years now, not using paper and pencil for a long time, and the final products are fascinating!

After moving homes, Yuming was working as a UI designer for a couple of years. Now he lives in Yantai, a coastal city of China.

“It just feels easier to create work in digital,” he said in an interview for Ballpit and added that social media like Instagram, Behance, and Zcool, as well as colleague artists, illustrators, and designers, inspire him the most. “I love every simple thing. Especially graphic illustration. Simple grey color. I’m moving in that direction.”

Yuming can get inspired by anything. He only thinks about “some keywords and makes some sketches, then colors it”.

Although he has a small following, he really hopes people will love his art and inspire them to feel happy and relaxed when they encounter his work.

Dennis Goris is a successful man with many talents that he’s proud of. He describes himself as a brand builder, creative director, writer, educator, and cartoonist. On Instagram, he posts one-panel comics that touch on many important things and while still being funny.

“I do a daily commentary on whatever is on my mind. Often it’s the news—especially during COVID,” the artist said in a statement for Bored Panda. “Sometimes it’s seasonal — like holidays or Halloween. Other times it’s just an observation of the silliness I see in things. Sometimes I have a clear idea for a message at the start. Sometimes I just start drawing, and a message will emerge.”

Halloween wasn’t too long ago, and as he mentioned, his Instagram account is currently full of comics about candy corn-stuff.

Throughout his entire career, Goris has been focusing on branding, identity, and creative work for national organizations, institutions, and non-profits. But only a few years ago, he started doing something for his soul: he has taken up painting for the first time in three decades.

He currently has over 3,000 followers on Instagram. Check his comics in the gallery below. Did you like it? Which one was your favorite?

Many people deal with anxiety and depression in their daily lives, and Chuck Mullin decided to brighten up their day with her illustrations. She’s capturing the reality of living with mental health struggles through her relatable comics about the anxious pigeon named Bird Brian.

Mullin is an illustrator based in London, and she fell in love with drawing at an early age. She turned to creating comics during her early twenties, using herself as a character, but later decided to do something a little bit different and put a pigeon front and center.

Her first pigeon comic showed the main character trying to stay strong and confident despite all the mean things other people say about them. She decided to make a pigeon a star of her comics for a reason—she considers them relatable underdog figures because they often get a lot of fate.

Mullin’s Instagram page @chuckdrawsthings became a huge hit because her comics resonated with people, who saw themselves in Bird Brian and related to his struggles with depression and anxiety.

“It’s an incredible feeling to see someone enjoy something I make. Even if it’s a sad comic, it’s meaningful to have people who can relate to what it’s about, it makes me feel less alone,” Mullin told Bored Panda.

Mahnaz Yazdani is an Iranian cartoonist and animator who creates powerful illustrations that highlight the problems of modern society. Her works represent a visual comment, often expressed satirically, on various subjects, including technology, war, human relationships, and more.

Yazdani’s illustrations are often eye-opening and tend to make the viewer realize an issue they might not have been aware of before. For example, one of her illustrations shows a man trying to get across a big gap between his home and his work. However, the only crossing is his Wi-Fi signal, and he’s stuck halfway through because of bad reception. This is a commentary on how people can be at a disadvantage and miss out on all sorts of opportunities just because they don’t have access to the internet.

However, it’s not all dark in Yazdani’s works. This talented artist also often shares funny and heartwarming illustrations that intend to who there is a lot to be optimistic about in the world.

There were also plenty of bad moments, as the time spent indoors sometimes came with boredom, anxiety, and the inability to see friends and enjoy everyday activities that we got accustomed to.

The majority of us had to spend some time in quarantine in the past year or so. The experience was different for everyone and had both its good and bad moments.

Besides staying healthy, the good moments also included the ability to be more with our families, focus more on hobbies, learn new skills, and catch up on books, movies, and TV series that we didn’t have time to finish before.

Everyone had their own way of coping with quarantine but did you ever wonder what would happen if fantasy characters were stuck in the same situation? Well, the illustrations from Italian cartoonists Lorenza Di Sepio and Marco Barretta, better known as Simple&Madama, explore that scenario.

The duo decided to create a series of adorable artworks that show how Disney princesses spent their time in quarantine. For example, Elsa and Anna from Frozen played video games while Star Wars‘ Princess Leia was occupied with working on her Millennium Falcon LEGO set.

You can check out these and more Disney princesses in quarantine below.

Disney is almost a synonym for animated content and home to some of the most memorable cartoon characters, including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Donald Duck. Their cartoons are loved by generations, and there is hardly a person on the planet that doesn’t like them.

Still, there is one minor issue with Disney cartoons. They are mainly “feel-good” oriented and don’t have enough edge to them for Disney fans who also enjoy horrors.

Well, thanks to New York City-based “maker of cartoons, art, and obscure 80’s references” Mike Chiechi, also known as Frank’s Kid, that has now changed.

Being an avid fan of cartoons as well as the horror genre since early childhood, Chiechi recently came up with the idea to combine these two. He started recreating scenes from classical Mickey Mouse cartoons and adding iconic horror movie characters like Leatherface, Ash Williams, and Freddy Kruger to them.

While this might seem like an odd mix, the mash up actually works really well. You will have a whole new look at Mickey Mouse while also wondering why Disney isn’t producing horror cartoons already.

Ukraine-native Nikita Busyak is a self-described “urban sketcher”. His works mostly consist out of detailed architectural drawings of buildings in his home city of Kharkiv and other destinations he visited. He also creates digital artworks and is an aspiring photographer.

This talented artist manages to capture the intricacies of the structures surrounding him, focusing on unique elements and features that make the buildings stand out among the cityscape. His drawings are even more impressive when you know that he only uses pen and ink to create them.

In order to make his illustrations even more life-like, Busyak also turns to digital software for help. After finishing the sketch, he uses photo-editing tools to subtly illuminate his work, making the light seem like a natural occurrence inside the drawing and adding another layer to already stunning scenery.

Considering everything we’ve seen of his up until now, the illumination extends beyond the surface of his artwork and into the subtext as well.

Busyak showcases his works on Instagram, where he has more than 50K followers. You can check out more of his illuminated architectural drawings, as well as other sketches below.

Besides her work in the cartoon and animation fields, Yazdani is also an accomplished director and scriptwriter. In addition, she works as a freelance illustrator for various newspapers and also teaches animation courses at the Universities of Isfahan. You can check out more of her works below.
