The post The Cultural Tutor Matches Famous Paintings With Real-Life Locations That Inspired Them appeared first on TettyBetty.
]]>The team behind the page took 16 paintings from well-known painters like Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Grant Wood and placed them side-by-side with photos of the locations that are featured in the artworks.
Vincent van Gogh was known for turning to places he lived for inspiration, so it isn’t a surprise that two of his paintings made the list. The first is The Church at Auvers, painted in 1890, which depicts the church Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption located in Auvers-sur-Oise, France. The second one is Café Terrace at Night, which Van Gogh created in 1888, showing the café terrace of a coffee house at Place du Forum in Arles.
Other paintings that feature locations you can visit include American Gothic by Wood, Palazzo Dario, Venice by Claude Monet, Christina’s World by Andrew Wyeth, and The Little Street by Johannes Vermeer. Some of the locations changed over time, but some remained the same as the ones featured in the painting.

5. Piazza San Marco, Venice by Canaletto (1730)
— The Cultural Tutor (@culturaltutor) June 23, 2024
Not much seems to have changed, but the truth is that between Canaletto painting this picture and the photo being taken, the bell tower collapsed (in 1902) and was rebuilt brick for brick exactly as it had been. pic.twitter.com/ACQiFhRMkb
8. High Street, Oxford by JMW Turner (1810)
— The Cultural Tutor (@culturaltutor) June 23, 2024
It's tempting to say nothing has changed; the buildings of Oxford remain just as they were 200 years ago.
But consider the impact of cars and everything they bring with them, like signs and tarmac, on the appearance of the street. pic.twitter.com/czht9i1pFn
9. Palazzo Dario, Venice by Claude Monet (1908)
— The Cultural Tutor (@culturaltutor) June 23, 2024
Monet is hardly known for his "realism", and yet his depiction of the Palazzo Dario is somehow more beautiful, and feels almost more truthful, than any photograph could ever be. pic.twitter.com/3zMWrisj1H
13. A Moonlit Night on the Bosphorus by Ivan Aivazovsky (1894)
— The Cultural Tutor (@culturaltutor) June 23, 2024
Another place — Istanbul, called Constantinople in Aivazovksy's time — where the view is almost identical.
With the exception, of course, of the huge Bosphorus Bridge behind the (elongated, again) Ortaköy Mosque. pic.twitter.com/4guYJgfShU

]]>In his comics, Craig imagines the conversations between animals in ordinary and extraordinary situations. They usually feature humorous remarks and spotlight the commonly accepted personalities of animals. Dogs are affectionate and curious, cats have a tendency to be sarcastic and self-centered, while fish are just focused on survival in the sea of predators.
These conversations can also be similar to those of humans but feature a unique twist depending on the species featured.
For example, in one of his comics, Craig imagines the talk between two pigeons resting on the top of a tall building. They admire the view and debate about how much the building costs, just like two humans would probably do. But since money isn’t a thing in the world of pigeons, they use breadcrumbs as currency.
Craig started sharing They Can Talk comics with the world in 2015, and they have since become quite popular on social media, including having 650K followers on Instagram. They also inspired two books and a calendar.

He’s not always sure how the painting will come up until he finishes it: “I’ll have a vague idea of color and a small piece of a figure I can’t quite make out stuck in my head, and I’ll have to make it,” he says.
There’s something about certain artists that gives them the confidence to just barrel into a production and not necessarily knowing what’s going to happen, and yet having the confidence that it’s going to turn out well.
Such is certainly the case with Willcox and his work. Sometimes, the inspiration comes to him in dreams or during meditation sessions.

]]>Pugh’s works, skillfully created and full of captivating details, mainly feature children as main subjects and see them placed in the center of complex themes. Often having a dark undertone, these paintings capture the innocence and curiosity of children while facing them with a world and emotions they don’t have a full grasp of.
According to Pugh, he is attracted to art that tells compelling stories and aims for his paintings to be created in the same manner. He identifies strong narrative, technical mastery, and aesthetic harmony as three elements that his work must meet in order for him to feel satisfied with it.
“It is my belief that a certain level of skill and creativity can elevate a work to professional excellence, but that it shouldn’t end there. Art should move the soul of the viewer, and if I don’t find myself similarly moved while creating it, I can hardly expect that of the viewer,” Pugh explains in his artist statement.

Chewie’s unusual story, as well as his exceptional art, have brought him a significant following on Instagram. He now hopes that his success will encourage others to pursue their dreams.

Among her whimsical creations are many trendy and seasonal characters, such as the ones inspired by Christmas, popular shows like Squid Game, and much more. But our favorites are all the lovely animals she makes with a lot of love. ]]>Khoshroo’s busts show features of the human face in an abstract way. They are formed with thick slabs of polymer, which looks like they were recklessly put together and abandoned before the work was complete.
Some of the busts are made with a single color of polymer, while others feature multiple colors joined together in seemingly random ways. However, there is nothing random about Khoshroo’s works, as each color and shape are meant to project different emotions and personalities.
“I search for materials with interesting behaviors that embody a certain kind of empathetic physical feel. This material is very gestural on its own: The pieces dance and wrestle with this sticky substance to shape it into its final human forms,” Khoshroo told Colossal in a recent interview.
Khoshroo describes himself as a self-taught artist. He started painting and making sculptures in 2009 and has since become a recognizable name in the art world. He works and lives between London, UK, and Tehran, Iran, while his works have been exhibited all over the world in recent years.

]]>Velasquez’s creations look like a perfect arrangement of colors that come together to evoke feelings of curiosity and visual satisfaction. Every layer of the same-color vinyl stripes appears just like a brushstroke of paint, with uneven ends to enhance the effect of a brush being lifted from the canvas.
His creative process starts with placing hundreds upon hundreds of vinyl stripes over a piece of wood. Under their own weight, the stripes begin to bend and take over the shape of the wood they rest upon.
According to Velasquez, “slowly building these sculptures becomes akin to layers upon layers of the experiences and connections we make inviting a perceptual encounter and a tactile experience.”
Velasquez’s vinyl sculptures have received recognition in the art community, with the artist receiving a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant for Painters and Sculptors and a MacDowell fellowship. He also exhibited his works across the United States, including a solo show at The Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. Check out more of them below.
