It’s hard not to be moved when looking at Kassandra Guzman’s ceramic works. They are simple and minimalistic, yet there is something about them that makes them unique and cheerful. Could it be the bright colors, vibrant designs, or the fact that they have wobbly handles?

Guzman started her journey as a ceramic artist back in 2016 when she decided to try her luck in the pottery business and establish a studio in her apartment. She worked on her skills while also looking for ways to get people interested in her products. As it turned out, the latter wasn’t all that tough as Guzman was natural and her small-batch releases would quickly sell out.

As her business grew, Guzman was also growing as an artist. She started experimenting with various designs and at one point found herself focusing on the handles of her ceramic pieces. This led to the creation of exciting new collections that featured organic shapes with whimsical handles.

These collections brought Guzman more exposure and even caught the attention of interior designers for Showtime’s variety series Ziwe. They contacted her and this led to one of her pieces even making the set of the show. This inspired her to continue working even harder and she currently has several new projects lined up. In the meantime, let’s check out more of her works below.

Montana-based artist Christine Sutton creates pottery that has practical use but can also be considered artwork. Each of Sutton’s plates, bowls, and cups is unique, and they come adorned with whimsical illustrations of birds, animals, and nature motifs.

Sutton has been engaged in art in some way for most of her life. Her first love was painting, but in 2016, she discovered a passion for pottery after her friend purchased a kiln. She mastered the craft and eventually decided to combine it with her passion for painting.

Now, Sutton creates all sorts of ceramic dishes that she decorates with owls, bison, horses, and other animals. She uses the sgraffito technique, carving a design in hardened clay and then glazing the piece before placing it in the klin.

Sutton has a studio called Little Bird Painting and Design, through which she offers her ceramic pieces alongside other products like paintings, prints, and tattoo tickets.

“I’ve been an artist my whole life and love nothing more than when someone connects enough with my art to want it for themselves or a friend; it truly is the highest honor!” Sutton explains on her website.

Ceramic figurines are not as popular as they used to be. Still, we doubt that anyone out there wouldn’t want to own one made by Sophie Woodrow.

This talented Bristol-based artist creates curious ceramic figurines that are nothing like you’ve seen before. Her porcelain creatures are often on the surreal side, having animal and human-like features with the addition of fantasy elements.

According to Woodrow, her captivating works are inspired by “the contact point between the natural world and human culture.”

“I am fascinated by the representations that people have made of animals throughout the ages, what they say about them and their times, their sense of themselves in the world, their strengths and vulnerabilities,” she explains.

Woodrow has been creating in various media over the years. However, clay was always her main focus, and this fascination prompted her to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Ceramics at Falmouth College of Art. While influenced by many contemporary and classic artists, she always strived to develop her own style, which is evident in her ceramic figurines.

Woodrow’s pieces often find homes in private collections and art galleries. She also frequently shares her newest creations on Instagram. Check out more of them below.

Michele Quan makes decorative ceramic objects for your home and garden. The pieces she makes become a canvas on which she adds paint, text, and color, with the images rooted in visual symbols found in Eastern iconography. The finished object has, therefore, a spiritual essence to it, providing much more than simple decoration.

“When making things I have to see it in my head first,” Quan explained in an interview with Matter of Hand. “Some people just go for it and it evolves, but for me it’s weird – I have to see it in my head or I don’t believe I can do it. I have to be able to see the process linearly. Once I figure out how to make something the first time I’ll make a template so that I don’t have to re-think it every time. If you have to think too hard it’s more exhausting.”

All handmade, from start to finish, her pieces are either hand-built or thrown on the wheel, after which they are painted. The work is then fired in a gas kiln to 2,350 degrees. Other materials used include hand-dyed cotton, hemp rope, and reclaimed wood.

“I feel like anything I say is going to sound corny, but I want my pieces to create moments where people look back at their intentions and how they want to operate in the world,” says Quan, “what they wish to see or have or be or connect with. Just bringing them back into the present and connecting them to the beauty of the world; that’s a moment where everyone feels really good. It’s like touching ground before you go off into the craziness.”

Invite calmness into your life through her original artwork.

Illustrator and ceramicist, known simply as Rosi, promotes body positivity through her art. “I cover a lot of topics and themes but generally they’re all centered around women and women’s health,” she told Inky Goodness. “As someone who has struggled with body image and the female body I want to share my experiences and shine a new light on certain topics such as body hair and body image.”

She approaches these topics with sensitivity as well as a healthy dose of humor, making her illustrations all the more relatable. In one illustration the caption reads: “You need to forgive yourself,” while another illustration wishes your day to be filled with chocolate.

Having studied Fine Art at Oxford Brookes University, Rosi currently runs an illustration business from her home, based in Bristol, as well as working as a graphic designer at a publishing company. “I would love to work solely for myself and be a full-time illustrator and ceramicist,” she admits. “I also hope to have a small studio where I can teach a few workshops.”

In the meanwhile, her fanbase on Instagram keeps growing, attracting more people to her delightful creations. “I think Instagram stories is a great way to communicate with your audience,” she says. “As well as this, it’s great for sharing other people’s work and more personal parts of your day that maybe you don’t want to keep on your feed.”

Julieta Alvarez’s ceramic accessories and jewelry are anything but traditional. Run by sisters Julieta and Rocio Alvarez, the Spanish brand works with natural materials, breathing fresh air into traditional artisanal techniques.

With a fashion and graphic design background, Julieta Alvarez decided to experiment with ceramics after taking a crash course. “I needed a change and I decided to take a course imparted by Resu Labrador, an artisan that had a workshop near home,” she recalled in an interview with Cup of Couple. “I used to go there full of ideas, and she taught me different techniques to achieve my objectives. Since then, I haven’t stopped!”

Inspired by nature, Julieta Alvarez admits she fell in love with ceramics because of the spontaneity of the material itself, which allows her to craft almost anything. “You can experiment with it, try new things, learn, make jewelry, sculptures or just disconnect from the world and lose track of time,” she explained.

Their unique pieces are available in selected stores around the globe and have also been showcased at galleries and international museums. Check out some of their highlights in the gallery below:

“I made a selection of objects that play an important role in my memories and my personal life story,” said Daneels in an interview with Its Nice That. “By being the archaeologist of my own memories, I tried to bring the memories back to life in ceramic sculptures. The work brings up a memory-game of associations and stories.”

“The passion for ceramics came from my grandmother, who makes porcelain dolls,” she went on to explain. “I’ve seen her making them since I was born. I was always fascinated when I entered her workspace and saw all the porcelain heads, bodies and her huge collection of old fabrics.”

Mastering her craft by watching countless tutorials on YouTube, the self-taught ceramic artist is well worth following on Instagram (if nothing else).

Tracey Meek creates watercolor illustrations and collages, but it’s her child-like ceramic sculptures that really grabbed our attention. Inspired by people, nature, and science, she creates with one goal in mind: to make people happy.

“I like making things that make people happy,” she told Inky Goodness. “I love the personalised element to it, especially with gifts. A lot of people come to me with a commission for a friend who has a pet that they love dearly, or they want me to pull their personal quirks out from. I just love the thought of them opening this completely unexpected gift.”

“My media is often mixed,” she added, talking about her creative process. “I draw, first and foremost though. I’m most comfortable using a brush over a pencil. I enjoy working with collage, as well as clay, and wire/paper sculpture.”

“I’ve been experimenting with clay and larger, more color and texture based, minimal painting,” she went on to say. “With the ceramics, I’ve managed to pick some comic characters right off the paper, and mold them into these life like creations, that are also really sellable products.”

“I was living with a roommate who was doing ceramics in his garage and I had a bunch of concepts floating around in my head,” recalled Little in an interview with the Urban Outfitters blog. “He taught me the basics and I have been doing it for 8 years now. My style has evolved as I have learned more about my craft. I will have ideas for years and not know how to properly execute them. Then, someone within my community will give me some advice or I will learn a new technique and figure it out. Once I have a success like that, I will build off of it and apply that new technique to other pieces.”

“Ceramics and art in general makes me feel euphoric,” said the Texas-based artist. “There will inevitably be low points in your given endeavor but if you feel intensely about what you do it won’t matter.”

There’s no shortage in our need to fill our homes with quirky ceramic sets. A quick way to add a spark of personality to your place, ceramic art is always there to save the day. This week, we present you Lorien Stern’s ceramic pieces.

From a ceramic shark head, meant to hang above your fireplace, to a flower vase shaped like a ghost, Stern’s creations are as funny as they are unique. Based in Inyokern, California she runs a small brand consisting of clothing, home goods, and accessories. Her one goal as an artist being: making people feel happy.

“I feel that my consistent theme is making work that makes me feel happy,” she said in an interview with the Urban Outfitters blog. “Even if it has to do with unsettling subjects like death, or mysteries of the ocean, I like it all to bring out positive feelings.”

“I would die to team up and design products with museum gift shop,” she added. “Especially The Museum of Natural History in NYC. I grew up visiting there once or twice a year with my grandparents. Museum/Zoo/Aquarium gift shops have always inspired me.”

Check out some of her creations. Do you have a favorite?
