Ali Cavanaugh is an artist from St. Louis who uses watercolors to create dreamy portraits of women. She calls them “modern frescos,” as they are similar to the fresco-secco painting style.
Cavanaugh includes minute details of her subject’s appearance in every portrait and at the same time evokes a “tender unseen presence that transcends understanding in the depth of a soul.”
Her work can currently be seen at the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art in Wausau, Wisconsin, but if youvisir the museum, check out her Instagram and Facebook profiles.
Comment from the guest book of Modern Frescoes, Ellen Noel Art Museum: “These paintings take me to nostalgic places. Hard to describe but perhaps the best attempt I’ve got is when you’re little, swimming in a pool at a party…everything is loud and hectic with your head above water But then, for the first time you release all the air in your body and let yourself sink to sit on the bottom of the pool. You look towards the surface everything is muffled and peaceful for a few moments” -Nicolle #underwater #holdingyourbreath #sinking #weightless #childhood #swimming
