Artists can use many different things as their canvases, and in Japan, city administrators came up with an idea to let artists decorate manhole covers. What a fabulous idea, right?
The manhole cover painting project began over three decades ago, in the 1980s, when Japan started modernizing sewage infrastructure in more rural areas. Since then, each and every municipality makes its own manhole design, which can display municipal symbols and local landscapes to abstract patterns or illustrations of local legends. They even founded a Japan Society of Manhole Covers!
