Hello! I haven’t done one of these posts in ages, but thought I’d use this photo of me, drawn on by @fathimasstudio to kick things off for this year’s #marchmeetthemaker. Once upon a time there was an illustrator called Katie who lived in Northumberland. . 5 things about me. . 1. My job = Live Illustrator ✏️ I draw & paint at events, meetings and conferences. Recording ideas is my magical power and I’m SO GLAD I realised. It all kicked off in 2016 when Glamour Magazine named me as a hot wedding trend of 2017. Lol. . Travelling around the UK (and recently Amsterdam!) to draw for different businesses and organisations is MA FAVE. I love going to new places and meeting new people. . 2. I’m an Accidental Tedx speaker In 2019 I went to a Tedx talk and ended up on stage with my iPad of drawings. 😂🙈 I 100% believe that makes me a Ted Talk lady. I’m putting it on my CV. Fight me. . 3. The Good Ship Illustration 🏴‍☠️ ⛴ ✏️ Right now @helenstephenslion @tania.willis and I are setting up @thegoodshipillustration to help illustrators and image makers navigate a creative career. Our first course is coming out in April (so soon! AAGH!) . 4. It is nap time and bath time all the time 🙌🏻 🛀 Work incentives round here are afternoon baths and/or naps. Self employed life, yo. I’m a lovely boss. . 5. I made a productivity guide (because I needed it!) and now it’s one of the most-downloaded things on my website. . Good Ship Illo updates and the productivity guide freebie are all linked in the usual place 👀 #marchmeetthemaker #marchmeetthemaker2020day1 #marchmeetthemaker2020

But it’s her commercial work that we find most exciting, illustrating at live events for brands that include Dove, Nespresso, and Stella Artois, amongst other selected clients. “I offer live illustration for brand promotional events, parties, weddings, and meetings,” she shared with Printed.

Her work includes illustrating custom Nespresso cups, as well as creating massive window paintings. “Being able to capture information in a visual way is great, and I love the challenge of listening carefully and draw quickly at the same time,” says Chappell.

There’s also the bonus of seeing other people’s reactions as they watch her illustrations take shape. “Being able to witness that is something very special,” she admits. “People are always very excited when they realize what you’re doing and why you are there. There’s always this skeptical moment when someone is trying to figure out what is going on, and then they want to get involved!”

It also makes for a less solitary practice. In other words: it’s an overall win-win.
