Mirrored House Creates a Kaleidoscopic View of Swiss Landscapes

Los Angeles based-artist Doug Aitken recently installed a structure made of mirrored surfaces that reflect the beautiful Swiss landscapes. This is part of this year’s Elevation 1049, a series of site-specific installations in the mountain town of Gstaad, Switzerland.

Aiken’s project called Mirage Gstaad echoes the snow-covered sceneries while blending with the surroundings. It also creates a kaleidoscopic view of the Swiss Alps when seen from within.

According to Aitken, the materials used for the structure were chosen in collaboration with local authorities to “be conscious of environmental issues, such as the fritting (the aluminium stripes) that were added to the reflective surface for the safety of birds,” he told Collosal.

His installation will continue to reflect the breathtaking landscapes of Gstaad for the next two years. Admission to the Mirage is free as well as other Elevation 1049 projects.
