Nishant Choksi’s Caricatures are Very Relatable

Award-winning Illustrator Nishant Choksi knew from an early age that if people were to take his job seriously, he had to take it seriously first. “I come from an Asian background, where a career in the arts was not encouraged,” he relayed in an interview with Lecture in Progress. “Because of this I had to fully commit myself to it and do it early.”

Years later, and his character illustrations are highly sought after, granting him features in top tier publications like The Guardian and Vanity Fair. And apart from his editorial work, Choksi has also collaborated with brands like Vodafone and Dyson.

His toolbox includes both analog and digital helpers: pencil and uni-ball micro for sketching, Winsor & Newton brushes for inking; Sketchbooks and stacks of A4 paper for final artwork; and Photoshop for coloring. “I’ll be given an article, headline or subject, and I produce humorous, character-based concepts for articles,” he explained his creative process. “My approach lends itself to editorial, which requires problem-solving with multiple solutions to tight deadlines.”

“When you do get a job, the sketch phase – looking for the idea and getting the right concept – is a lot of fun, even though you always have the fear of not solving it,” he added.
