Brianda Fitz-James Stuart knew she wanted to dedicate her life to the arts, she just didn’t know exactly which discipline to choose. But why choose when you can have it all? Instead, Stuart works as an illustrator, a fashion designer, and a DJ. She’s walked the catwalk and has been the face of Sony; collaborated with top tier fashion brands like Gucci and Kenzo; her illustrations have been exhibited in galleries around the world. Talk about having your cake and eating it.
Amongst her many talents, it’s her illustrations which have caught our attention. Full of symbolism and mythology, her work is sure to spark your imagination. “Drawing is my way of traveling to a world where plants, animals, naked bodies, eyes, and esoteric symbols await me,” she explains on her personal website. “Illustrating for brands, magazines, and fanzines and playing music is my way of telling what inspires me, worries me and moves me.”
“I can design any kind of piece, from a Swatch watch to wallpaper to ceramics and carpets,” she told the Intercontinental’s blog, talking about her varied experience as an artist. “I illustrate books… I find every canvas is interesting for me to work on.”
Here are some of our favorite works by her.
